I have no heart and my avatar makes everything sound sexual. Also, It's pronounced "sam-ee".

When the war with the Hooffields was over, it seemed that the McColt's life would be much easier. Gone are the days of fight, hunger, and poverty. So, why Crosscut, Hacksaw, and Buzzsaw still don't feel right about it? Sometimes, setting a few things right is harder than it seems.

Velp.

That was a thing.

So, when's Buzzsaw going to ask Crosscut and Hacksaw to tell her about the rabbits? :duck:

Sorry, I felt I had to lighten the mood. This story just, disturbs me on quite a few levels. I think I get the message you're going for here. When all you know is war and peace is completely alien to you, it's gonna be hard to adjust. And it's going to be especially hard for a pony like Buzzsaw, who has a very similar disposition to Lenny from Of Mice and Men (hence the joke I made above). In fact, that was one of the stronger points of the story. It's not an easy fix, even though the Cutie Map called the TwiShy mission a rousing success.

However, the execution of this message is lost within layers of very troubling implications. For example, it's heavily implied that Buzzsaw killed somepony during the feud, and Crosscut wants to hide that from the Hooffields. Again, if you're going for an Of Mice and Men vibe, Buzzsaw does not have the same leg to stand on that Lenny did. It doesn't matter if she didn't intend to murder somepony; she still wanted to hurt them for what turned out to be no good reason. At least Lenny had some form of defense, even though no one at the time was going to buy it (which is why George put him out of his misery at the end).

I also can't say that I agree with Hacksaw's approach to the situation. I know why she thinks they're better off fighting. War is simple; peace is complicated. But the way you present it, you make it sound like Hacksaw's perspective is valid. And, it's not. I'm sorry, but it really isn't. Maybe you weren't going that route. Maybe you were just presenting the situation as it is and let the reader come to their own conclusions. But that's not what it felt like from my end. :unsuresweetie:

This story did make me think, and I find that to be a good thing. Nevertheless, I can't say the morality presented here is all that appealing (assuming that's how you wanted to present things, which I doubt it is). And while I appreciate the parallels to Of Mice and Men, you flew too close to the sun with Buzzsaw's dilemma. All in all, I feel that this tale is a bit too dark for its own good. :applejackunsure:

I actually had a few thoughts about Of Mice and Men while writing, although that wasn't my main focus. What I'm happy about is that your interpretation of the causes of Buzzsaw's trauma is completely different from what I came up with and also from what the prereaders thought, so the story is as vague as I wanted it to be (at the prereading stage, I've heard three different theories on who or what is buried under the pile of rocks on the other side of the hill. Interestingly, you're the first person to mention some hapless Hooffield.)

Maybe you were just presenting the situation as it is and let the reader come to their own conclusions.

That's what I was going for, but it seems that I failed. I guess, given that Crosscut is a violent bully, people would automatically side with Hacksaw, despite her being neither the wisest, nor the most reasonable pony around (not surprising, given their isolation – I assume they met about thirty ponies in their whole life, most of them being their own family). However, Crosscut has a point: she doesn't want war and wants to protect her family (even though her definition of protection is twisted, to say the least). Unfortunately for the sisters, her only way to prove it is beating Hacksaw within an inch of her life, simply because she doesn't know any better.

Now I'm hearing banjos. Marvelous.
