I was more than just nervous. I was crying internally. What if she didn’t want to stay with me? What if my appearance wasn’t good enough? What if her father didn’t like my bike and leather jacket? This and more filled my mind, everything had to be perfect.
I wanted to impress her. I wanted to impress the girl of my dreams, Twilight Sparkle.
She was the right person, the kind of girl you look at and think “she's the one”. That's what I thought when I saw her for the first time.
Of course, I wasn’t the most romantic person in the world, and that’s why Rarity would help me. She's been dating Applejack for two years now, she would know what to do and how to be really romantic. And with all the money Rarity has, she could help me find a five star place in the city and a good dress or suit.
I just wanted to make this perfect and special for us. And nothing would stop me! This night was going to be perfect, even if-
“Is this one better, darling?” Rarity disrupted my thoughts, showing me a second dress, this one with some fetching pink frills.
“Rarity, I know you're trying to help, but do I look like a ballet dancer or something?” I joked, lounging on the couch, “How about a suit?”
“Okay, darling. I thought you'd want something more feminine, but I can give you”—she looked a little more in the closet—“this one!" she exclaimed, pulling out a red suit with a red bowtie. "Here, the best suit for you. It fits with your hair colors; perfect, no?” Rarity let out a little smile while looking at the suit, “Oh! And it has a hat too!” she picked up a top hat on the other hand.
I nodded and went to the dressing room, and then left after a few minutes. I looked at a mirror. I felt… Elegant.
“Oh dear, you’re… fabulous. She'll be lucky to see you like that! I know I have Jacqueline, but you’re beautiful like this, darling, Twilight will love it!” she gave a lively laugh at the end and a dreamy sigh. Before I could ask why she sighed, Applejack, Rainbow, Pinkie and Fluttershy entered in the room.
“Jacqueline? Seriously, Rare, ah already said ‘bout you callin' me that, ya know ah don’t like it…” Applejack crossed her arms, referring to her first name, she never liked that one. Rarity just rolled her eyes and gave her a kiss on the cheek, making the other blush slightly.
“Hehe, you like it when she calls you that in bed, right, AJ?” Rainbow laughed while Fluttershy let out an ‘EEP!’ and widened her eyes. I shook my head and laughed. “What? It’s totally true!” Applejack gave her a big punch on the shoulder, making her quiet, but she looked at the blonde's face in a challenging manner and muttered something like "hillbilly", then sat on the little couch.
“Do you all think I look good?” I gave a little turn, making a circle and then finishing saying ‘ta da!’.
“Stop doing that, Sun! If ya keep like that ya will seduce everyone!” Applejack joked, “But serious now sugarcube, you’re looking good! Twi would have to be an idiot to not like yer suit,” she nodded, like saying ‘not bad’.
“Everyone knows she’s not a idiot, she can be a egghead, but not idiot,” Rainbow rose from the couch and walked over to me, giving my body a good look, “You’ll rock her, Sun! I am one hundred and twenty percent sure that you will get that girl!” she gave me a small pat on the back.
“And then she will be your real girlfriend! And you two will be girlfriends! And *gasp* how many kids do you want to have?! Can I come to your wedding? I’ll bring my entire family! My sister, Maud, will be sooo happy to know you two are together, Sunny! And then I’ll-” Rarity put a finger on Pinkie’s lips and finally got her to be quiet.
“Calm down, we're not getting married yet, Pinkie. I love her, and I know that… But life things are life things and you all know how it works,” everyone nodded at me and Pinkie let out a ‘nope’ as she filled balloons. Where did those balloons come from anyway?
“Well, darling, we just want the best for you, and I know you're nervous, just... It'll be all right, okay?” Rarity asked in a kind way.
“I know, thank you, girls,” I sighed and smiled.
“Now you just go and kick into the goal!” Rainbow said, smiling at me.
“I will, Dash, I’ll try, just wish me luck, girls, because this will be THE night!”
Later...
The rumbling noise of thunder was heard as Rarity helped me to put the bowtie on again, since it was almost eight o'clock. The rain started a few moments ago, as if someone didn’t want me to take Twilight for that date.
“Don’t worry darling, it's just the rain, not the world’s end. You can go in Applejack’s truck, you know she can lend it to you,” Rarity said gently while looking at me, smiling.
“You sure?”
“Of course dear, here, the keys,” she opened a drawer and gave me the keys, “Now go, its almost eight o’clock, you have a girl to get, tigress!” Rarity said jokingly, “I knew you and Twilight would end up like this, everyone will be so happy for you two. You know everyone wanted to see you two together since our prom,” she smiled.
“I know, but don’t have too much hope, I know I’m not THAT special to her… She just accepted to go on this date because…” I felt my friend's hand on my lips.
“Don’t say that, you’re being silly, Sunset. She loves you, you just have to focus on the date.”
“Thanks, Rarity.” I blinked at her, “I need to go now…”
“I know, darling, go and get your prey!” Rarity mimicked a roar of a lion at the end and I laughed, then I left the room. This was it, nothing could go wrong, everything had to be perfect for her.
I knocked three times on the door, after a few seconds there she was. Twilight Sparkle in all her beauty. “Hello, Sunset, I… Uh, you’re here for.. Our date?” she seemed more nervous than I, and as she always did when embarrassed, she wrapped a strand of hair around her finger.
She was wearing a purple dress that fell to her thighs, and over that a small white jacket protecting her from the cold wind. She wore white high heels and earrings the same color as the dress, Twilight was beautiful.
“You’re… Perfect.” She blushed, Twilight looked so… Cute when she did that, sometimes she could be more shy that Fluttershy, and I thought that was almost impossible! “You don’t need to be shy, Twilight. I won’t bite you, you know. So… Let’s go. I've got AJ’s truck.”
“Where are we going?” she asked.
“Simply the best restaurant of all, then we will stop by the Gaia Garden and then we can stay there lying on the grass just watching stars, I know you like that,” I smiled when she gave me a excited and happy face.
“The Gaia Garden? But that’s pricey, right?”
“I have my contacts. Octavia to be precise. Her father is the owner, as you must know. She did it for only a few cents, they are filthy rich!” I stated, as I thought of how Octavia could let us spend a day in her new huge mansion. Vinyl was lucky. “So… Let’s go?”
She nodded.
I parked the truck in front of the restaurant, and I saw Twilight’s eyes shine. The front of this place was extremely chic, the restaurant's name, Le Grand, shining on a plate. “Have you never been to a place like this?” I asked, she shook her head, “Neither have I, but c’mon now, you’ll love it,” I left the car and opened the door for Twilight, helping her down from the large truck, making her let out a little laugh.
“Of course I will, and… Thanks again, Sunset, this is really important for me…”
“I know, it’s important for me too,” I took her hand and we walked into the reataurant. We went to the counter where a man with a odd mustache was doing his job. He had a tuxedo and a monocle, he was a typically fancy wealthy individual. “We reserved a table here, can we come in?”
“Miss…” he started looking for my name on a list.
“Sunset Shimmer.”
“Hmmm…” his eyes moved up and down, reading the paper. “I’m sorry Miss Shimmer, but I fear that no reservations have been made for you and your lady friend, you must be mistaken.”
“Wait… But… I- Rainbow Dash and Rarity Belle made it for us, isn't it on their names or something like that?” I asked desperately, Twilight looked at me with a calm face. Was she was not worried? The evening could be spoiled because of this!
“No Rainbow Dash or Rarity Belle here, my lady. Again, you’re mistaken.”
Oh, Rainbow… I'm going to kill you! I just don’t blame Rarity because she demanded she be here and sign in her name, I thought, already imagining it…
“Sunset? Uh… We can just go to Gaia Garden, the rain has stopped. Looks like your plans aren’t ruined after all,” she gave me a little hopeful smile and I couldn’t help but reply her with another smile.
“You’re right, let’s go. And thanks for nothing,” I turned and said to the man.
“Sunset! He tried…” Twilight murmured to me, but then laughed.
“It’s Rainbow’s fault, she'll get what's coming to her!” I said as I helped Twilight into the truck and then got in the car and took off my top hat, throwing it in the back seat. “It was her one job…”
“It’s okay, Sunset, this isn't ruined because of a little mistake.”
I just started the car and laughed.
Gaia's Garden was completely silent, not even the animals making a sound. People usually didn’t go there during the week. The only illumination came from the moon and the fireflies, it was perfect and…
“CLOSED FOR WORKS”
“What the… Oh no, I can’t believe this, this is impossible!” I looked to the sky, “You really don’t want this date to go well, huh?!”
Twilight laughed at my actions. “It’s okay, we still can go to my house, Sun, it’s no problem…”
“But Sparkle…”
“Sunset, I said it was fine, let’s go. We can spend our time together there. It's going to be great!” Twilight said while gently smiling at me.
“Okay, let’s go… Again…”
Later…
“So you, Twilight Sparkle, have had a crush on our principal?!” I started laughing, while Twilight blushed and gave me a little punch on the shoulder. “What? That’s… That’s funny and you know it!”
“She’s pretty, okay? Just don’t tell anyone…” she crossed her shoulders and looked the other way. I smiled at that, and then I approached her, kissing her cheek. “At least I wasn't a matchmaker for Vinyl and Octavia or Rarity and Applejack!” Twilight joked.
“I’m an expert on being matchmaker for lesbian couples! Blame… Rainbow Dash again,” I said smiling, mimicking an authorative tone as she laughed, “And that’s serious work, okay? Don’t ever doubt that!”
Twilight shook her head, “I… I’m sorry for tonight Sunset, but…”
“I know you didn’t like it, if I were you I wouldn’t either and-” she put a finger on my lips.
“Sunset, I don’t really need a lot of fancy things or places to go. I'm content to just sit or lie down on a couch or a bed with the girl I love and just read a book, talk to her, watch TV or just cuddle. I don’t need her to buy a lot of things for me; I want something simple, because I think that's the kind of thing that will be in my mind forever. And that girl is you, Sunset, and I don’t need anything more than to be with you. Really, I love you, Sunset, and no amount of small problems or mistakes will stop me loving you. You’re special to me,” Twilight put a hand on my cheek, blushing all the while, while I just stood still staring at her.
“You… You really think that?”
“Yes, Sunset, I do. And I love you like no one ever has, or ever will,” she smiled and blushed.
I sighed in a happy way, “I love you too Twilight, more than I can even express, and I… Wanted to ask you something.” I took a deep breath, “Do you want to be…”
“Yes, Sunset, I want to be your girlfriend!” I didn’t even finish and she kissed me, making a swarm of butterflies burst in my tummy.
“Finally…”
“I love you, Sunset.”
“I love you too, Twilight.”
We just lay down there on the couch together. I didn’t cared about the problems anymore, because my heart was beating like I had a sledgehammer in there when I was with her. And it was wonderful.

This started off well enough, but it feels like you didn't quite know what you wanted to do with it, and the ending's a bit of a letdown. :/

I felt like Sunset and Twilight were way younger than they are. And naive too.
I enjoyed this. But the date did remind me of another fic I read, an Octascratch fic. I don't remember the title, author, or date published, I only remember how the date was ruined with missing dinner reservations and the gardens closed for work. Did you base the date in this off of that fic or the other way around, or is it just one big coincidence? Still enjoyed it regardless.

Yeah. I just remembered what it's called, Playing it by Ear. The date doesn't happen until one of the later chapters, and it all happens in Equestria with no humans, but the dates are quite similar. Also the fic is a good read, you should check it out if you like Octascratch.
