This story is a sequel to The Empress and the Goose-Girl

Rarity is beautiful, elegant, talented. She has to be, to survive as Seneschal to her Dark Majesty. But now a newcomer arrives at the court of the Empress Nightmare Moon, and she threatens to unsettle everything Rarity has worked so hard to build.

Technically a sequel to The Empress and the Goose Girl, but works fine as a standalone if you don't want to read that. TW for some violence and blood, but it's not massively graphic. Written as a gift for the lovely Zontan, as part of an anthology.

After 989 years on the moon, Nightmare Moon is eagerly awaiting her return to Equestria, take down her sister, and claim what should rightfully be hers.

However, one can only brood and plan for so long before things grow... stagnant.

And then, something catches her eye, coming towards her moon's surface at an alarming speed. Maybe this, whatever it is, will prove to aid her in her plans.

Story was written for Jinglemas 2021 as a gift for PeerImagination. They wanted a Nightmare Moon and Human romance, and I hope I did good by ya! Apologies for the story length, but it got waaaay out of hand on me and I have a disease where if I'm writing something I'm liking then I tend to do more than I should.

Once, long ago, Equestria was full of life. Then the Nightmare came. She cast down her sister, sealed away the sun and cursed the world to an eternal winter.

A thousand years later in the ruins of what was once Ponyville you find hoofprints, traces of the last pony. You follow them to answers, tragedy, and the terrible truth.

A man stumbled into Equestria through means unknown. A year later Twilight Sparkle saw the worst his species had to offer and, in a paranoid fit, tried to have him killed.

Cast out by pony society, this man must find his place with the other Equestrian outcasts in order to survive. Fortunately, there are more of them than anypony else thought. And they aren't happy.

He may not like it, but he has little choice but to step into...

Princess Twilight Sparkle is living every little foals dream, something even she used to only dream of. Becoming a princess was wonderful, and feeling the love of those close to her made her feel ever so special inside. But as she begins to realize that she will need to start living a life without her friends, the very ponies who made her dream come true, she starts to fall into a sort of depression. The very thing a certain somepony has been waiting for.

Nightmare Moon; fabled mistress of darkness and fallen protector of dreams. A legend and nothing more, right?

The ponies of Equestria couldn't be more wrong, especially when Nightmare returns during the Summer Sun celebration and proclaims eternal night, with no Celestia in sight. All of the ponies of the land shall kneel and praise their Queen as she brings forth her beautiful night and they shall praise her magnif-wait. Where are there wardrobes? Why can she clearly see their cutie marks?

In a jealous rage, Princess Luna rebelled against her sister, embracing the darkness in herself readily. The newly transformed Nightmare Moon and Princess Celestia fought above the Castle of the Everfree; after an arduous battle, Celestia lay bested by the sister she'd fought so hard to keep under control. With no other choice available, Princess Celestia wielded the Elements of Harmony.

Now, Nightmare Moon rules over a dark Equestria. She finally has the power of which she'd dreamed for so long.

She only wishes she didn't feel so wrong inside.
