In the far north, beyond the Minotaur lands and Caribou tundra, an unnatural storm is brewing. The Midnight Lord is returned and readying for war. He does not plan to fight fair.

The life of a Princess of Equestria is always a stressful one, whether you are an experienced one or not. Sometimes you need to get away from it all. That is exactly what Twilight and Cadence thought when they decided to take a trip to the Hoofwian Islands just the two of them. The vacation is suppose to be about having fun, but deep down one of them wants a bit more than that. Their only concern, though, is how the other will react to this.

Five years ago, at the behest of Princess Celestia, Princess Cadance was sent to travel the world beyond Equestria's borders as a diplomatic envoy. During that time, she learned to move through political circles, wining and dining with the world's elite. Back home, her former classmate, Twilight Sparkle, has since proven her mastery of magic and been elevated to the ranks of Celestia's revered guard: the Battle Mages.

The two foalhood friends suddenly find themselves together again when Cadance is recalled to Equestria without warning and Twilight is given her first official tour of duty: protect Princess Cadance at all cost from both new and ancient threats. Now, fresh out of the Academy, this young mare is ready to prove herself equal to the deeds of the great soldiers she read about as a filly. Too bad the princess she ends up protecting isn't Celestia.

Love is certainly a funny, wonderful thing. Cadance never expected it to grow into something so painful for her.
