Sunset Shimmer has a problem. Or maybe she doesn't. Maybe there is no Sunset.

Derpy always considered herself an unusual pony, but then so did everypony else. They just don’t know why: she talks to ghosts. As would befit an unusual pony, she encounters a most unusual ghost. Of course she’d want to make it her friend.

The rite of the phoenix is one of the most celebrated moments among the sun-gazers of Solaria. For with the hatching of a new phoenix, comes the ascension of a new phoenix-born: a mortal chosen by the phoenix to be its new life partner and guardian. Only those with both strength and purity of their inner fire can draw the attention of a hatchling phoenix, so only the best of the best can ever hope to be chosen.

To one young orphan girl named Sunset Shimmer, she could only dream of witnessing the ascent of one of Celestia's chosen. As the day approaches, she learns that she will be able to, as she has been selected by the crown as one of the girls to serve at the event.

Little did she know that this would be the seminal event of her life, and change her fate forever.

Sunset Shimmer visits Equestria.

Not too long after the events of Forgotten Friendship, Sunset Shimmer decides to pay a visit to Equestria. Being the good friend that she is, Twilight realizes that Sunset still have doubts about her past actions that are yet to be snuffed out. With the support from Twilight and Starlight, Sunset realizes that the present is the best time to make more memories rather than to dwell on what has passed.

It was safe to say that the Post Crush concert had been an interesting time for all concerned, Sunset Shimmer especially. But when all was said and done, there was definitely fun to be had, and now the girls pack up their things to head on home. However, as they journey, they spot a particular trio in need of some assistance.

“I may not know what the future holds,” Sunset told her friends, “but here me when I say-

“That your past doesn’t define you and your past is not today?” Pinkie interjected with a wide smile.

The redhead returned the grin with a small one of her own as her eyes misted, surprising the girls. Sunset shook her head and, surprising the girls again, she initiated a group hug.

“No, here me when I say, that it’s just scary to think about, the future I mean, and I’m honestly scared right now.”

Words and actions can sometimes hurt more than we know, sowing betrayal and hatred where friendship and innocence lies. A single thoughtless action can be a tipping point, one fallen domino setting off hundreds. Look back, and answer me.

Sunset Shimmer isn't like the other Freshman in Canterlot High School. While so many others explain away the strange things that happen in their town, she knows better. There's an entire world out there, a world of magic and incredible creatures, one that she's determined to reach.

Careful study and preparation brings her to the portal in front of her school, at the last moment of its opening. Sunset doesn't have a clue what might be waiting on the other side, but she's sure it will lead her to the magic she's always wanted.

No matter what it costs.
