The Gate wouldn't open to admit a pony ever again.

I thought that was just... off.
5129818 Consider here how Blueblood acted in Canon towards Rarity... then quad it for his Father. Also imagine that he was one of those parents who are always working and never have any time for their kids... and when he was home, it was always, "Nobles, son, don't do this/don't do that..." Like Merida's Mother in the film, Brave.
In other words, an absolutely awful parent, who saw poor Blue as an heir or legacy and status symbol rather than a living, thinking, feeling colt with his own dreams...
