This story is a sequel to Pandoramonium: A Detective Rarity Mystery

The crime? Murder.

The crime scene? A locked room.

The culprit?

No biggie. Rarity's got this one in the bag.

If this is your first Detective Rarity Mystery, don't worry! You can read this one without spoiling the others. Or, if you'd like to start from the beginning, you can do so here!

Preread by the lovely Lunaria!

OH AND SHE'S BACK! THE MARE BEHIND THE HAT!

Another great mystery, and I actually guessed the culprit correctly! Wasn't even close on the logistics of the crime though. Glad to see you're still writing!

Rarity is going to get that exercise that she's been avoiding.

He leveled his gaze at Rarity. "Actually, the same could be said about you two. We are in the middle of nowhere, after all. Nothing around for miles, yet you were here no more than an hour after the body was found."

Rarity and Rainbow Dash have a habbit of being around people turning up dead.

"It's an unwritten rule that all nobles, no matter how minor, must try to one-up Canterlot Castle for housing," Crystal replied.

And then Equestrian magic decided to give a random transformed unicorn/alicorn a crystal castle with infinite rooms :derpytongue2:

"Train?" Rarity replied. "Moi? Never. "

From that moment on, all train fans gathered to cancel Rarity—until they started argued amongst themselves which train is better

"Silver Plate," she said. "The butler of this mansion."

The butler did it. They always do. Case solved :raritywink:

"A safe!" Rainbow exclaimed.

Not just any safe. It's SCP-SAFE-J-C!

"I suspect I know what may have been in this safe," Rarity said. "And I suspect you can guess as well, darling."

Another safe!

Silver Plate shrugged. "The Baron just called it the safe room."

Lol, I did not read that far when writing the safe jokes. There better be more safes!

"That's fine by me," she said, standing up from her chair. "Anything to get out of this dreadful mansion sooner."

Yes, to be safe

She was beaming, now. "They're one of my favourite types of mystery! There's always some hidden trick to them. Oh, I've always wanted to take on this kind of case!"

The trick: A safe. Inside a safe leading to another safe. that is connected with another safe :applejackconfused:

"I see," Rarity said. "What kinds of weapons and equipment?"

Rarity, you'll gonna find out soon why it's unsafe to ask him this question

"Alright," Rarity said. "One final question. Do you know what was in the safe in the safe room?"

The General began to sweat. "That's top secret. Classified. I can't tell you."

The Foundation is real! But don't worry, we'll keep the secret safe

"I understand," Rarity said. "Rest assured, I'll treat your daughter with the utmost care."

Rainbow: But I didn't promise it. Starts telling in detail what happened

George winced. "I hate it when ponies put it like that. I never wanted to design weapons, you know."

Hm… I think I'm safe to assume what happened… very strong motive. But the closed room… hm… :raritywink:

"Well, I didn't think it was a gunshot at first. It didn't quite... sound right, you understand?"

Well, now I have no idea :applejackunsure: Back to the safe in a safe connected to a safe theory

"It's a spell called flippus crossarnus," Acute explained, as she returned the marbles to her pocket. "It swaps two objects of similar shape and size."

Trixie gets competition, but she's Great and Powerful for a reason and will safely put the filly back to her place! :trixieshiftright:

“You ‘could pick out a gunshot anywhere, even in a crowded room as a train went by’, eh, General Bristle?

Well, it's safe to say: I was led astray. (At least for that part)

*Reads author comment*

I'm too lazy for this! Give me my safe jokes!

"So," Obtuse," she said. "Would you mind turning out your pockets to see if there's a lighter in there?"

Technically, this shouldn't be enough proof, but whatever: Admitting after that is your fault :derpytongue2:

Relief washed over his face. "Thank you." He turned back to his daughter. "Acute, I need you to go with Miss Rarity."

Can I say how much how I hate how every little detail was intentionally mentioned and there for this case/foreshadowed etc? So many packed things and not a single one useless.

(Well, except for why Rarity was here already, that's cheating from her side)

All in all, great mystery fic. Just sad there was no safe in a safe connected to a safe :raritydespair:

"That seems... inhumane."

Inequine? Perhaps, I promise you, it's very consistent with humanity.

Well, there goes my theory that someone shot him through the keyhole from the hallway.

Oh, they never have prrof in these stories; they just keep talking until the murderer self-incriminates.

But what about the bloody knife?

Huh. So I guess that explains what Obtuse's angle was.

I love a good Murder Mystery.

A locked room mystery is like a magic trick. The Big stage illusions are less impressive to me, because there are only so many ways big illusions can be done. Things like Walking on Water or making Landmarks Disappear. You know what seems to have happened cant have happened, and there arent many ways to make what seemed to happen happen.

Close up, street magic, involving sleight of hand is more impressive to me, because the technical skill to accomplish it is greater than constructing an elaborate set.

If someone dies in circumstances where he cannot have been killed, then the logical deduction is that he didn't.

I immediately suspected a Fire Cracker had detonated, and that he actually died sooner. Typically, I suggest suicide. Perhaps he was being blackmailed, saw no way out, and killed himself. That would fit in with his mysterious calls. But why make it look like murder?

My guess is the following:

I don't think George is responsible. If he were, he would have also insisted the sound was a gunshot.

Other things we know. Our deceased had meat in his fridge; and was reviving communications he blocked his secretary from listening to, and the current government of Griffonia is hostile to Equestria. Crystal bright cannot return there, and there are defectors resident in Equestria.

Hypothesis:

- Our deceased member of the Military Industrial Complex was selling secrets to Griffonia. He kept the servent staff out of the way so their appearance could not be revealed. He communicated with them directly. Wealth, and aspects of his backroom deals were held in the Safe Room, where he conducted such meetings. Our murderer became aware of this; murdered him, and set up a fire cracker to give himself an alibi. They also took the opportunity to destroy some prototype weapon, held in the safe, before it could be used against people.

As for who this could be, I think Crystal Bright or Bristle; but my Money is on Obtuse. I suspect he used his daughters translocation trick, to send the Key by which he locked the room back to his victim; after locking it on the inside.

I dont think I've got it entirely right, but I think I've got some of the pieces there.

Now let's seem if I'm right.

Gah. Close. I was damn close. Should have occured to me that the spy and murderer were the same person.

Very well done.

He was also quite handsome, Rainbow thought. Not that she was into stallions

And what's wrong with liking stallions, Miss Dash?

Um… well obviously there’s nothing wrong with it, but she’s gay?

For the record, in this series, Rainbow is a lesbian and Rarity is bi. That’s how I’ve been writing them, anyway.

Oh hey, I actually had most of the pieces this time. I just underestimated how much of a scumbag Obtuse might be. He's certainly no Twilight. Er, not that Twilight, the Loid Forger Twilight. Another excellent tale of Detective Rarity... with concerning implications for the future of this timeline.

Also, I wonder how Sweetie Belle will feel about becoming an aunt.

Thank you for a gripping read.

Acute and Obtuse’s names may or may not have been ‘Anya’ and ‘Loid’ in my notes. Not a direct inspiration, but once I made the connection, it stuck.

Oh hell yes. I come back and find a new Detective Rarity waiting. Life is good.

So, the general, who is a self-proclaimed expert in griffon weapons immediately recognizes the sound, and an actual griffon does not? Let's keep a note on that. Oh, and that Obtuse fellow is the only suspect who declares the door to have been locked.

An automatic, huh? And only one bullet missing. Where is the casing? What kind of killer shoots someone and then drops the murder weapon beside the body instead of taking it away and disposing of it? Even more suspiciously, it was a perfect shot to the heart with minimal blood around. I doubt that he died in that room, and I highly doubt that he was killed with that pistol.

It would appear that Obtuse was putting on a bit of theater with that kick.

"I'm not one for facial hair, I'm afraid," Rarity whispered back.

Well, there goes the Poirot analogy.
