This story is a sequel to New Endings, Old Starts

With books in her eyes, a chipper unicorn comes to the big city of earth ponies, certain that they would be more open to the idea of a grand library than the superstitious unicorns she was leaving behind. She would maybe awaken ancient spirits, or just bring to Manehattan the joy of a good book.

Both is also a possibility?

Other cover art is on the way.

A great start to a new story.

This is an interesting start. It's clear that the book was planted ther but I'm not sure who did it.

love the cover art, who made it? Before you change it ;)

It is a temporary bit, holding over until we get our properly commissioned piece in place.

This story is off to a great start! Excited to see the next one!

Small typo...not in the chapter itself, but in the description. "Manehattan" should be Maretime Bay. It's understandable, though, since both are large populous areas that start with "M."

Hoof to Heart, let's Make Our Mark, our Cutie Marks help find our Spark.

Glowing bright with inner light, we make our mighty friends alright.

So here we are in the future. The very smartphone filled future. :derpytongue2:

This really, really gets the feel of a G5 episode. It has just the right amount of quirky silliness and genuine emotional warmth.

"Uni-buddy" is indeed a fun phrase. :pinkiehappy::raritywink:

What stands out for me the most is how good this chapter is at showing the difference between G4 unicorns, and G5 ones. G4 unicorns tended to come across as "high elves" at the top of the social ladder, to the point that Diamond's mom was desperate to join them.

Here the unicorns are very much like forest elves, the mysterious fair folk of the woods, the "oddballs" of the world. And even among the "oddballs," there are "oddballs." And they are trying especially hard to find their place.

With that in mind, it's touching that Amber, Misty, and Izzy are all unicorns who are kind of "odd amongst even the odd." And because of that, Misty and Izzy can tell when Amber is being polite and trying not to show just how much she really, really wants a library.

It's unfortunate that Bridlewood superstition doesn't make good grounds for a library, but it does make a certain kind of sense..."someone read a book, cursed everybody, and they all died" is definitely a trope that happens every now and then. :derpytongue2:

It's also fitting that Izzy, being Izzy, has no problem with stinky trash, but Amber has more trouble. :raritywink:

I am 99 percent certain that Comforting chaosed that important looking book to where Amber would find it, but we'll see if I'm right or not in time. XD

I also learned that "seaweed toast" is an actual thing in our world too. :scootangel: Seems like the perfect thing for a bay town.

Looking forward to more as this sequel kicks off. :pinkiehappy:

Wait a second... I made that up! Dang it... My horse oracle powers have struck again, in a sideways kinda fashion.

Seeweed toast for everypony!

I'm certain there was no chaos involved in this. (innocent whistle)

Legitimately amazing.

Ahaha! :trollestia:

:pinkiecrazy: No seeweed toast for me. I will have a brownie though.

Yeah, you should always check whether things you made up are actually real.

Huh, I liked our first taste of Comforting. Wonder where/if we'll see her again : )

First chapter name... I think everyone gets this joke.

Amber colored at the thought. "Nopony would want to read a book I just... wrote for fun..."

Just for Fun

Now things are going to get even more interesting with some friendly "orderly chaos" in the mix.

Where can Comforting's bestest friend from long ago be, since she's awake also?

And how are each of the others going to react? Especially poinies like Posey when she sees Comforting?

Telling Sunny might be good but she would have a lot of questions.

I really liked the way Izzy jumped so quick to the idea of using magic summon people from the past, and Amber's reaction to it. I couldn't quite put my finger on why, at first, but then I realized that Izzy's behavior was reminding me of Pinkie, and Amber's, of Twilight.

And here they are with Comforting, all grown up. :scootangel: It's sad that Comforting can't be with most of her old friends, at least for now, but it's also a very good thing that Comforting has a lot to offer to new friends, especially since she very much remembers how to be a teacher.

It'll be very interesting to see the reactions around town to Comforting's return, as well of the results of any unicorn magic teaching.

Those are the archetypes in play there for sure.

Older, wiser, but not sadder.

We had one reader already predicting Posey will have thoughts.

I miss the wolfponies... And the bat ponies... Will you bring them back?

11803867
Were there batponies in the prequel?

11803871
If I remember correctly you mentioned them in reference to the wolfponies and other omnivores. I love when you include them in your stories, but I hardly see new stories with them.

11803875
The trick, generally, is that they're so tenous, canon-wise. But I do what I can. G5 though? They're even shakier than usual. Hm.

11803879
They is just one of the reasons I don't like G5. To much ponies only and completely cut off everything that was great in G4.

11803487

Those are the archetypes in play there for sure.

I'm really glad we both notice it.

Older, wiser, but not sadder.

That's an interesting perspective on Comforting that makes me even more curious to see more of her. :pinkiehappy:

We had one reader already predicting Posey will have thoughts.

Ooo

For better or worse, I'm looking forward to Posey's possible reaction.

Comforting is having to be very careful if she talks about the "olden times"? And there's a test coming ? Maybe she can distract herself by helping Amber with establishing a library in town.

This was another nice chapter. It seems that Comforting already knowsa things about the modern agebut isn't ready to reveal that yet.

11805170
Comforting, originally, came from a modern Earth-like world. Woo, return of cellphones!

The beginning with Comforting finding out about phones now being commonplace was very cute, as was Together's message, and Comforting hugging her phone in response.

Speaking of which, it is indeed interesting that Comforting's fellow spirit keeps changing names over time...Harmony, Amity, and now Together.

Poor Posey. :twilightblush: At least things worked out for her, despite her initial suspicion. It's a good thing Comforting is such a good egg. :scootangel:

I think a lot of interesting history conversations could be had if Comforting, Amber, Sunny, and Zipp wind up in the same room. :pinkiehappy:

It's also interesting to see Comforting getting used to life in the future, and I look forward to more of it.

She had just weened herself off Twitter too...

Just which of the two is a chaos spirit, hm?

Comforting accepts pets and hugs from suspicious ponies.

She also welcomes this strange new realm and its many creature comforts she doesn't have to chaos into being. There are a lot of plusses going on here.

11805539

She had just weened herself off Twitter too...

Ha! :pinkiehappy:

Just which of the two is a chaos spirit, hm?

That's...actually a fair point and a really good bit of irony. :rainbowkiss:

Comforting accepts pets and hugs from suspicious ponies.

That's really open minded and compassionate of her, which suits her.

She also welcomes this strange new realm and its many creature comforts she doesn't have to chaos into being. There are a lot of plusses going on here.

So many modern conveniences.

I agree that there really is something to be said for just *having* an internet and not having to chaos one into being while keeping it a secret from most people.

Ok I have to ask is Comforting's house still around, and will she move it to Maritime bay? I know fro the maps of G4 and G5 both still show Sweet Apples Acres. So her house should still be around.

Oof, that's a big time skip. And a lot of history that we missed. Spirit life is a strange one. So many old friends. But so many possible new ones too : )

Comforting deals well with the loss of friends past. She cherishes the old memories, but is ready to make new ones.

Naturally I knew where this was going as soon as Comforting was showing the first wolf pony statue.

Well, mostly. Diamond's statue was a bit of a curveball, and because of that, it was the most emotionally powerful moment in the chapter. Comforting really did, and still does, love her marefriend.

That being said, I'm glad Comforting was able to make her house into a Fortress of Solitude, of sorts, and that the ponies of the future are wellsprings of compassion.

Oddly enough, I was most happy with Comforting's meeting with Pipp. Pipp seems very, very happy that Comforting has many, many nails to paint. :raritywink:

Looking forward to how Comforting's makeover goes. :pinkiehappy:

11808720
She had a wonderful past. She is sad it is over, but there is a delightful present, and untold future joys ahead, and struggles too. That's half the fun. She greets it all with a smile, and an offered hug.

The return of that investing side-arc lmao - love it

11808721

An unique perspective, which is fitting. Comforting herself is very unique, after all.

This is a nice chapter. I like how Comforting has met everypony now.

is Daddy Discord gonna make an appearance?

Books are coming, yay!

It seems that Comforting remembers that Chaos powers don't make for lasting physical things, such as a whole library building. Surely she can help with some orderly chaos inside it once it's finished being built?

11810429
It also doesn't encourage the lovely mortals around you to grow to their best, hence leaving Amber with a mortgage payment, but also becoming the first (maybe only?) tenant.

Amber getting flowers painted on her hooves was cute, especially since it kinda reminded me of those crown hooves that Pipp wore for a while.

The entire Mane Melody scene was really cute, especially since Comforting got to relax and be pampered, and because Pipp saw Comforting as a living work of art.

It was a neat little detail when Pipp noted that Comforting's nails gave her less surface area to work with than pony hooves, but also got excited that there were so *many* of them. :raritywink:

Working out plans for the libary with Hitch and the bank teller reminded me of something, and after some thinking, I realized what it was...the complex, but comfy process made me think of the process of buying a house in an Animal Crossing game. :pinkiehappy:

Hopefully the townsponies will get more used to creatures like Comforting and Sparky over time. On that note, it's great that Comforting and Sparky get along so well. :scootangel:

I like the idea of Amber and Comforting potentially living in the library together with Sparky being something of a "mascot baby." :scootangel:

11810782
Sparky has a home with a daddy he likes very much. He might be a happy visitor, but moving to the library feels a bit unlikely.

11810790

Understandable. Hitch does treat Sparky very well.

At least Comforting is helping Amber with some of the monetary difficulties.

G5 is a slightly shallow story, some of the lore doesn't make sense or anticlimactic. Hope you can make the best off of it, and not ruin the past or something. If ruining the past means it can be a good story, sure. I hope you can give more character to these characters, like delve into their characteristic and characterize them more into better characters with better character arcs, because recently in MYM, some of these characters act incredibly stupid.. Hope this works out and can't wait for the next chapter!

11811016
Because in MYM Twilight was like, "Oh, there is an evil villain out there that can absorb magic from anything but is like 10x worse than Starlight or Cozy Glow at it and I will have to absorb all the magic in Equestria and the Dragondlands into gems to prevent that, oh no!!". Twilight went backwards on her lessons that not everything can be solved with magic, perhaps her friends had passed and she starts to forget, but still, it's shallow of Twilight and ruins the character building and all the other things Twilight had went through.

Another example is Opaline, the villain. She says that she knows of Celestia and Luna personally as a filly alicorn, which brings up why was she absent in G4? Was she a cast out member of the controversial alicorn civilization? But that was disproved by Celestia saying alicorns aren't birthed.. But then later on in the series she said that she became an alicorn because she absorbed some sort of flame I guess? I don't know, but the point is she became an alicorn after Twilight became princess, which doesn't make sense if she knew of Celestia and Luna as a filly, such a contradiction..

Another one is of dragons, now there dragons seems to have 'shimmers' and require some sort of dragonstone as a source of magic and they have a lot more abilities with their flame breath, manipulation, transmutation, etc, I guess that makes sense with spike being able to teleport things, or is it the parchment that's enchanted? And then there is also Sparky being able to hatch without the ritual from G4 where they heat up the eggs? Breaking down more world building.

There is also weird Deus Ex Magicka stuff in G5, like the lantern being able to turn a bunch of scraps into a flying car, or cutie marks glowing to amplify sounds or suddenly change someones mind, magical storms that forces ponies to be nice to each other even though, as was mentioned, every problem can't be solved with magic, if they fear fights can cause magical storms, people that hate each other just won't talk and grow more spiteful of eachother even though just by talking some problems can be resolved even with a little bit of a rough start. Even Sparky the dragon with breaths able to switch cutie marks, like, what?? Starlight took years to study that and a sneeze from a dragon does the same thing? Stuff like those that ruins the past, you know.

Recent ones also do too, like Sprout suddenly going missing in MYM, Sunny being so dumb about Opaline pretending to be her 'inner thoughts', or Hitch not being bothered by the fact that they were trespassing and claiming a factory that isn't even theirs. In the movie Hitch was all about the law. In here he doesn't care.. More things like that. So I hope you can come up with a story to fix all those plotholes and hopefully not follow the trend of the odd lores.

I wonder who the mayor of Maretime actually is. I guess we'll see next chapter.
It won't be long before Comforting learns about Opaline and I bet she's have to restrain herself from doing anything rash when she learns about how Opaline abused Misty.
