On the Sliding Scale Of Cynicism Vs. Idealism, I like to think of myself as being idyllically cynical. (Patreon, Ko-Fi.)

Hearth's Warming songs. Aren't they just the most annoying things ever? Sure, some of them may sound good the first time around, but see if anything still holds up after the hundredth repetition. The gramophone stand sure won't, especially once somepony lands the well-earned kick. And yes, this latest specimen is a fairly new composition, but Twilight already hates Hearth's Warming Wham! on a level usually reserved for falsified scientific proofs. Since nopony is going to be playing anything except holiday songs for the next moon...

And yet Twilight is convinced that it's possible for her to reach the holiday itself without ever having to hear that 'song' again. She's willing to make a wager on that.

She's wrong, of course. That's the fun part.

I wonder what's the most collateral damage the Bearers have ever caused in one incident. I'm sure they've done millions of bits in property damage before, but have they ever caused permanent serious injury or fatalities?

"Twilight..." a white unicorn gently stepped in, "we are here to enjoy ourselves. Simply allow the ambience to wash over you --"

Back in the 1980s, I moved from Pennsylvania to Texas. Hearing "Frosty the Snowman", "Rudolph", etc. In Spanish is weird.

Asked "Who is 'Felix Navidad'"?

The natives were glad to enlighten me "They're running for governor of Texas".

God Bless people like that.

Possibly "Tanks For The Memories". (S5) Dash trashed the Weather Factory.

"No." Twilight didn't have an accent. Everypony else had an accent. So there was no accent within the stupid lyrics. Just stupidity.

Relate! 😂 So it's not only me who's noticed that the closer someone comes from wherever you're from, the less likely you are to even notice that they have an accent at all. If I worded that in a comprehensible way. 😅 enjoyed this little detail.

What an absolutely wild tale. Quite enjoyed this, very wholesome and perfectly on-brand when they still went to the fair after she lost the bet.
Thank you Estee! Merry Christmas from the past!

I haven't read the story yet.
I haven't heard anything since 2010.
But I have that song in my head now. Thanks, Estee. ><

Awww. Cute story. Too bad about the hay twists.
Can I get this Wham! song out of my head now, please? >.>

That's so funny. Felix Navidad.

Now I feel guilty at sending Estee that folder full of Christmas music.
Well, not too guilty. (Do you know *how* many music groups in the 60s-80s recorded 'Jingle Bells' on their Christmas albums? At least 141.)

:rainbowlaugh:

Poor Twilight.

When I first saw the title, I was sure the story would involve Flurry and her Whammy, but still a great tale.:pinkiehappy:

🎵Gramma got run over by a reindeer, walkin' home from our house on Christmas eve 🎶

Y'know, I think Whammageddon would be more popular as a game in our world if the song was as bad as the Hoof Ridges' song...

Last Christmas is a beautiful ballad of romance and broken hearts, sung by a pretty damn good duo. The titular !!WHAM!! in this story is a funeral dirge of dead turtles and ruined childhoods.

At least it's not the Wham I'm thinking of: fruity and also the sound of bullshit hitting the wall.......JITTERBUG!!!

The idea of pony Mariah Carey actually undergoing cryopreservation is a delightful concept.

As for Twilight... Yeah, maybe she shouldn't set herself up for crippling paranoia in an already stressful season. And the sad thing is that the band drew inspiration from the same cherished memory. Just in a rather different way.

Thank you for another delightful treat of a story. All the ponies in that town are crazy, and the librarian is no exception.

The story was good but all I can think is I really want Luna to hear that song.😂

There is another version, featuring any version of >.> (I hesitate to even write it, it's so engrained)... never mind, the rum-pa-pum-pum song.

Same rules, but 🥁.

Patapan was exempt.

Twilight did not deserve that ending. Poor Twilight. I feel so bad for her

But... but..! I want to know if the sugared hay twists were as good as gilded childhood nostalgia portrayed them!

This story (and learning about Whamageddon, which happened earlier this month) makes me glad to have been raised an Orthodox(ish) Jew - because we don't listen to much Christmas music and get to be blissfully ignorant of all the suck. Going through the songs described, the only ones I could solidly identify were "Deck the Halls", "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer", and "Do They Know It's Christmas", and of those, I only really know how "Deck The Halls" goes - the others I just know of via cultural osmosis. Though I do like the music of a couple of carols - Silent Night is very pretty!

"No." Twilight didn't have an accent. Everypony else had an accent. So there was no accent within the stupid lyrics. Just stupidity.

reminds me of a Spider-man comic book where HE said "other people have accents, not me", after someone else said he had a New Yorker accent.

I'm actually surprised Estee didn't go after Joni Mitchell & Jim Croce, too.

Respectively, they put out River and Doesn't Have to Be This Way, both songs set in the holiday, about heartbreak.

There's another, but I'm forgetting the name of the song & the artist. That one HS sweethearrs meet at a grocery store & get drunk in a car.🙄

A better question is, if normally the madness episodes only involve one of two of the Mane Six, why don't they develop collectively a protocol to restrain and deal with the insane members before it's too late?

Though I do like the music of a couple of carols - Silent Night is very pretty!

Tim Minchin has also written a Christmas song, White Wine in the Sun. Since it was for his daughter (and I never heard it played ad nauseam), I tend to give it a pass.
It starts:
"I really like Christmas/
It's sentimental I know, but I just really like it
And one of the other lyrics is:
"I am freaked out by churches/
Some of hymns that they sing have nice chords"

That was a good story.

That would be "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg.

11780313
Well, Jim Croce's song hasn't somehow become an ubuquitous, inescapable "Holiday Standard" in the way that Wham's song did. (At least, I don't ever recall just randomly encountering it any ambient in-store holiday music over the PA systems...) For that matter, I had to look up the Joni Mitchell song you mentioned -- I've never even heard of it until now.

:shrugs:
Blame WZID in the 90s; that was the Christmas station in the area, and I worked at Dunkin's. That was exactly the type of song they played ad nauseam.

But imagine it interspersed with stuff like 'Jingle Bell Rock'.
:shudders:

Good holiday playlists are possible! Even (especially) with public domain music.
At least I only have to deal with my internal playlist now, even if it gets hijacked by people playing games.

I've never heard of Whammageddon up until this point, so my first thought when reading this was
"No way in hell that isn't a Neil Ciceriga song."
And somehow, it isn't. Thank God.

Personally, I blame Fluttershy for deducing the one avenue left to Twilight to try and relieve her stress and purposefully cutting it off with a “not pony” loophole that was clearly against the spirit of the bet. I believe her motive, but still….

Thank you for introducing me to the inspiring concept with a fun story! I have to be honest… Christmas music has never bothered me much at all. Might be different had I been stuck working a job that repeated it though…

Twilight should be thankful it's not "I want an Ophiotaurus for Hearth's Warming."

That was a great holiday themed Estee story. :rainbowlaugh:

Always great to see the madness of the mane six take over.

And I thought Twilight dancing on stage with that group would have given birth to Head Banging and Mosh Pit.

Twilight has gone Mad I say, Mad!

For the longest time, I could not have sympathized with Twilight, as I never really got that whole, "You ruined my childhood," thing...

...Until I read that yellow immortality story, and realized it would be a very long time before I could enjoy Tweetie Bird without the horror/sadness of that scene cropping up. I do like that story, don't get me wrong, but that particular scene is just going to stick with me.

Working in retail I can agree listening to the same five songs with 20 different variations is very very tiresome by the time Christmas rolls around

One of the more recent compositions seemed to concern being trampled. By reindeer. A species which wasn't sapient, and therefore couldn't have any of its members explain why they saw trampling ponies as a suitable holiday activity. The ponies didn't seem to be getting much out of it.

Tell that to the gift reindeer up north that pinky visited. Also, toilet was raised in candlelight not some other British like town we talking about
