weird. this showed up in feature but not my favourites

Another reader reported that same issue some weeks back. The solution was apparently to un-fave, and then re-fave the story to fix notifications. Hopefully that will work for you.
11137034
Yep it helped me.
Great story. Interesting to see russian mountain goats with a neck for magic to play with the griffons and humans on one team... Can we get some character development for them? Or are they red-shirts?
Never eat goats in my life... Do it taste like kangaro?
Attack and magic effectiveness over defense, good tactic if they can avoid getting hit in the first place!
Sooo... Higher healing and there for Recovery?
I wonder if it will wear of over weeks/months or if it is a permanent gig...
11137082
And now it will hopefully help KMCA. I wonder why that keeps happening, though...
Not to worry. They are definitely not redshirts, and yes, you’re going to get significant character development of them over time--I plan for them to play a major role going forward. In fact, the Ibex were such a hit with my prereaders that we’re already talking about how we might use them over in Eros!
Oddly enough, neither have I. I have tasted goat milk, though. It’s different but it’s good. I’ve read that if you like lamb or mutton, you’ll probably like goat, which is in fact a staple meat of a large part of the world.
https://sandcreekfarm.net/what-does-goat-taste-like/
Agreed. There are advantages and disadvantages to how they fight, and I plan to show both over time.
You’ll just have to read and see. I’ll just say for now that like ponies or griffon mages, they can be magically exhausted, but just like them as well, they can recover their power over time.
Civilization ending threats make for strange bedfellows, lets hope they can be useful.
11137095
I think it's a update error. If someone has a story tracking before the server was switched it comes up.
I simply untrack and retrack my few hundred storys in the making, that fixed it for me.
So typical.... War World Three has begun between the Griffons and the Ibex... Only for the Borg to show up and spoil ALL the fun everybody had planned out.
...ohwell....
Now, if only we could just be that lucky when it happens to us!
11137131
Both figuratively and literally at times in this story.
Put it this way: I wouldn’t have introduced them if I wasn’t planning to make full use of them. Among other things, you’ll get to see them fight, see the griffon/ibex conflict from their point of view, and why they took such extreme and potentially war-sparking measures against humanity, not all of which have been revealed yet. Oh yes, and they’ll probably make an appearance or two in Eros eventually as well.
11137367
How inconsiderate of them to interrupt a previously planned conflict!
Yep. Guess they’ll just have to make the best of it against the Cloven. They can go back to their more personal disputes later. Or will they...?
If the Borg come here, I only ask that I be assimilated by Seven of Nine!
i kind of trust the Ibex to be telling the truth , just not all of it.
this is a grate chapter.
11137095
I know one reason it happens is related to publishing the chapter but I assume you're not pulling it down then republishing it.
ANYWAYS! The Ibex are a fun twist, I'm looking forward to seeing where you go with them... I also worry about the puns for Eros.
Ahhh Fortrakt, already thinking of close air support, one of the Marines favorite things (it's why there are Marine Air Wings after all) ...
Not quite Enemy Mine, but close enough ... with zombies!
11137731
Yep, that was such a fantastic show! Sadly, they just don't comedy that good any more. If you can get the DVDs in the stores, grab them!
The prisoners could have left anytime they wished, but they were more valuable to the Allied war effort by staying put, since they were using the camp as a pitstop in the undergrown railroad to evacuate escaping prisoners from other camps as well as a home base from which to do sabotage efforts in Germany.
A notable feature of the series was that much of the cast, especially many of the German guest stars, were in fact Jewish and several of them were concentration camp survivors and/or were soldiers/sailors who fought in WWII--Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink), John Banner (Sgt. Schultz), Robert Clary (Cpl. LeBeau), Leon Askin (Gen. Burkhalter), and Howard Cain (Maj. Hochstetter) just to name a few.
In addition, Leon Askin had a scar on his face, reminiscent of dueling marks sported by many German officers of the era, had actually gotten that wound from being kicked in the face by a Nazi guard.
You know, I'm not sure I ever recall this point being raised up before, here or in the original, about gryphons being mythological beings in the human world. Makes sense that it'd be brought up at some point.
I think after this mayhem, Cloven of the Sun TM started the Gryphons and Ibex will learn to be more tolerable to each other, oh i don't expect them to forget their past and beef, but to overcome it to a degree in light of what yet to come. Also We will need Equastria in on this and soon. The way you set up the cloven, especially this being their 2nd run with experience at that, human heavy weapons and armies will be needed, and i can see some human greed too like better position to bargain for resource deposits, trade, and the like ( it's sad, but it is true, and a mayor factor for the human governments to jump into this at full ) But should worth it. I mean tanks, drones, or just 'old fashioned' artillery will be a huge boon for this conflict, and maybe a nuke or two to get the cloven toasty
Well, that may have been THEIR orders but that doesn't address what orders their interrogators would have once they got him back to them.
What is the exact count of the group?
Human civillian 4
Human military ?
Earth Griffon 2
Sky Griffon ?
11139645
Very good point and a great way of deniability.
11138563
In theory a Good plan but in practicality i don't see it happen:
- Celestia probably don't want guns to become the norm on Equis / Equus.
- The ability to steal knowlege will change anything. Just one human could flipp the tables on the humans. Tactics, common knowlege, weapon tech, languages and culture... Knowlege is power!
- The portal is probably only big enough for a person maybe a bike. Making it only possible to transport things in pieces and the pieces might be limited in size...
- Pretty sure america learn in Vietnam how things can go south. Weapon and tech development can get dou only so far...
11137993
Is you'r avatar eating beef or sushi? Looks like beef strips...
Huh... Sounds very interessting. Perhaps story like that can find their way into Fimfiction
11139970
In theory, they would be a great benefit to the shooter. In practice, however, they often jam because there's nothing to regulate the strength of the magazine spring over the length of the ammo load as the bullets are depleted--the result is too much force is applied to load the rounds into the chamber for the later bullets. If you want a more reliable large capacity shootout, belt-fed machineguns are the way to go, otherwise, the more reasonable and reliable smaller magazines are in the 20-30 round zone--and as mentioned here in the story, you still want to shy off full loads for 30+round magazines for the same jamming problems.
11140017
For the military, weight is actually the bigger cost when it comes to dealing with ammo--you have to be able to carry all that shit wherever you go! Lighter bullets means MORE bullets you can take with you!
Additionally, body armor isn't often worn by our enemies, so lighter bullets are the preferred choice for our troops--despite whatever propaganda you might hear from Marines (they're still only human, after all!). M-16/AR-15 bullets are about the size of .22 calibers. Moreover, lighter bullets tend to tumble as they fly--and while that sounds like a detriment to using such (and does limit their effective range to targets)--but the tumbling feature make them even more deadly when they hit than larger bullets: imagine getting shot in the shoulder and the exit wound ends up somewhere down around your ankle....and, NO, it's NOT taking a straight path throughout your body as it goes about its merry way!!
11140093
Yeah, that's such an awesome picture! I got it from DeviantArt. Tsitra360 says it's bacon, but it's that expression she has when she's caught that just grabs me every time I see it--that is SO much Rainbow Dash!!
As for HH, there are a couple of crossovers that made it here: "Schultz Knows Nothing" & "Nopony Escapes Stalag 13"

Fair points, there's a ton of factors to consider, but going by what we can see so far, the cloven dropped on the gryphons, and they did so hard, so I see some significant force is necessary. As for the portal, so far I didn't see in the story any concrete point of it's true limits given. Also something to consider, if the cloven manages to over run this world / reality, what stops them to absorb to know how to make portals too on the long run and knock on humanity's reality. This infestation of 'anti life' needs to be cleansed with fire, so "Brother bring the flamer, the heavy flamer" would be very appropriate here. And I have a sure hunch Celestia would be very keen to have the magical equivalent of said flamer against the cloven.
As for knowledge is power, absolutely. That said we already have counter measures in place for just this if you think about it, it's practiced everywhere in life, compartmentalisation. Is it full proof? No, but loss of one personal to the cloven won't mean the cloven learns everything, an overview sure, but not everything. Would take lot of capture of specific high value targets to be able to put a dent into the robust mechanics of government and military, especially when they are aware of the cloven have this capability. I'm sure this would be one of the first thing the human team forward home when connection established, as this is a trump card of the cloven which they used in the past with great success, and you sure as hell will do your best to counter such significant advantages, which the gryphons and ponies did already in the past.
Magical counter measure, heh, a very draconic one i can imagen from the ponies side, a simple enchantment to the head, if some one dies said enchantment do burn / freeze / acid, anything to destroy the unfortunate soul head / brain. You can do the same with tech too. But given the Cloven capabilities it would be a crucial counter measure, well one of them.
All that said, now back to my eternal complaint, the true tormentor of the soul. The cliff hanger, the wait for the next chapter, the breaking of the refresh button in hopes for more
11140251
Damn... I think i found my comment section Soul mate in you
I can agree on all this points! Very well thought trough way to counter them.
Didn't even considered the Cloven using the Portals to spread...
Multiverse and Murphy Law. Everything happens somewhere & Everything that can happen will happen.
Holy Shit... The Cloven are about to pay us a visit ain't they?
Indeed we will be in need of the Heavy Flamer and go on full exterminaty on the Cloven
11139970
Disintegrating belt > belt > Quadstacks > drums > the rest
And even for quad stacked Magazins you want a special magwell that can hold them, instead of the long necked quad stacked that go into regular magwells.
Any bets how long it takes Stavrou to start anything with the Ibex?
And I really hope someone is going to tell Fortrakt about the wonders of tripods and other crew served weapons where the user hasn't to deal with much of the recoil.
Huh. I didn't know they'd showed the griffons Labyrinth.
In any case, this certainly took a turn. And it could definitely take another depending on what the ibex do next. Still, they'll probably wait until they're behind some sturdy walls before even considering something underhoofed. (The matters of linguistic and mythological parallels can definitely wait until the hungering swarm has been dealt with.)
Also, let's hope the civilians' bloodthirst is indeed a side effect of residual cider. It's a little chilling otherwise.
Thanks again Firesight for another amazing chapter. There was a lot of great dialog in this chapter between Gilda and Fortrakt that I enjoyed reading, but what I really loved this chapter was the little surprise and twist in the latter half of the chapter with the hidden Ibex plot, their forced teleportation, in addition to their joining of the convoy with the main cast of the story. This is quite the large, but not unwelcomed, change in plot from the first story and I am particularly excited to see how this trio of Ibex will interact and influence the future of the plot and the main cast of characters. I wish you the best of luck with writing your next chapter, and as always have fun writing.
Before the Storm: The Rise of Firefly
Interlude #4: The Flight of Plexippa
I will hype until the day the Changelings join the Cloven pummeling
11141178
Glorious chapters ahead indeed. Sweet! If i ever go to war i remember to go for the high end stuff better. Better broke than dead in a warzone...
Threesome or foursome with the Ibex, because russian know how to party hard
11141609
I wonder if the dormant teleport will be used by the Cloven when they collected the Ibex bodys unless they had a failsafe to spare them usual interigation...
11142118
Eagerly looking forward to the next installment! This was a great story that you took over, and you're making it even better than the original!!
11142131
Nice. I check it out later
11137432
Like any good spooks. We’ll see what else they may be hiding in due time.
Thanks!
11137568
Nope. I rarely to never do that. And when I have, it’s usually been by accident. The publish/unpublish button is right next to the edit button, after all.
Puns in Eros? I would never stoop so low! And yes, this chapter was intended as at least a slightly double-entendre for possible future fun. But I’m not getting to that until they’re better established as characters and have hopefully gained a few fans.
11137752
Oh, he’s thinking about a lot more things than that, as the next chapter will show! But yes. He’s trying very hard to be a good soldier and officer even though he’s brand-new into the latter role. And he’s doing it in the face of certain distractions as well.
God, I haven’t seen that movie since I was a kid. I barely remember it now. I had to watch a trailer on YouTube just to recall the basics of it. Will enemies become friends here? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out!
11137993
Seconded. Hogans Heroes was an all-time classic sitcom that was always funny but also serious and suspenseful when it needed to be. There’s been episodes uploaded to YouTube, but unfortunately, their channels have received the banhammer more than once.
Aided by an incompetent and clueless camp commandant named Colonel Klink and his equally useless and obese head guard, Sergeant Schultz. The latter more or less knew what was happening in the camp, but he didn’t dare spill the beans lest he lose his post and get shipped off to certain death fighting the Russians on the Eastern Front.
All true. I also read that one of their conditions for doing such an unlikely sitcom was that the Nazis be portrayed as poorly as possible and never, ever win.
Now that I did not know. Adds an extra layer of irony to his role as General Burkhalter. I just wish the show received a proper ending with the German surrender and the grand reveal of the camp’s activities. But it was terminated without every reaching that point, though it did at least get to D-Day.
11138486
Thanks. We’ll see if they can find time to explore that subject later around all the battles (and sex) to come.
11138563
There are indeed some plans along those lines that I hope to bring to life at the very end of the story. But it couldn’t happen if they didn’t cooperate against the Cloven. That’s part of why I brought these three into the story now.
In due time, you will get your wish in spades.
As I said in an earlier blog post, I’d been resisting the idea of doing this for several reasons, not the least of which was that I couldn’t fathom that was DEL’s original plan for the story. But as you and many others are all but demanding it, I’m going to do it to at least a limited degree. I have to keep the story at least somewhat realistic to the verse, and the portal can only pass so much men and materiel at a time. You can’t transport a whole army and the infrastructure it needs over just like that, but a more limited deployment of certain forces may be possible.
11139645
That is certainly a valid point. And don’t think our heroes don’t know it.
11140089
As of the upcoming battle of Bale:
Human civilian - 4: Chris, Tara, Marco and Raleigh
Human military - 14: 1 squad of 13 Marines + 1 naval combat medic
Earth Griffon - 2: Optio Giraldi and Spear Jade Jumentum
Sky Griffon - 17: Fortrakt, Gilda, and 15 soldiers.
Ravens - 3 sky griffons
Ibex - 3 adepts
Total: a platoon-sized force of 36 mixed human and griffon fighters + 3 armed civilians, 3 Ibex prisoners, and 1 non-combatant (Raleigh)
That might fly in a diplomatic setting, but not out in the field. They know perfectly well what was likely to happen to Chris once his usefulness had ended.
This is all true, and were all reasons I was resisting the idea. But there’s enough clamor for it that I think I’ll have to allow for a limited deployment, like I said in an earlier blog post. I’ll have to work that out over time.
11140160
What he said.
No ammo is that cheap right now, excepting maybe .22 or pellet ammo. You have a pay an arm and a leg for a lot of it.
There’s a balance between bullet weight and power that has to be struck. I do hear that the next standard rifle caliber the military will use will be in the 6.8mm range, which should give it a lot more penetration power against enemy armor.
They are indeed quite small. And yet people still try to claim that they’re somehow unbelievably powerful rounds in order to get ARs banned as ‘Assault Rifles’, which is a meaningless term and scare tactic.
Yeah, that could put a slight damper on your day.
For all you guys know, I’ll have RD eating bacon by the end of this story!
I wasn’t aware of those. Thanks for sharing!
11140251
That’s a very valid point. If they conquer Tellus, they’ll gain the knowledge and numbers to conquer Earth as well even if the existing portal is sealed. There’s nothing to stop them from opening up a new one to Earth or other realms at that point, and they’ll be fully aware of human capabilities then as well.
The problems start if the Cloven capture even a single human with knowledge of weapons and tactics, or worse, a Marine. That information is instantly transmitted to the hive and known by all, at which point they can start forming countermeasures and devising new soldier forms specifically designed to fight them. What forms would those be...? Well, let’s just say I strongly suspect there’s a reason that DEL had Starship Troopers figure in this story so prominently.
You’re thinking through this well, as your thought processes at least roughly parallel my own.
Sorry. I wish I could churn these out faster, but there’s only so much I can write at a time. I’ve been very prolific on this story for the past year, and especially the past few months. At some point, I will likely have to take a break from it to recharge and work on my other stuff.
11141178
Succinct. I like it.
Yep. There’s also no easy way to store a drum mag on a standard vest or belt.
Now there’s a thought! I jest (mostly), but I’d imagine he’d be a prime candidate to get to know them more and befriend them first.
In the next chapter, Fortrakt will meet a lovely and quite lethal lady known informally to the Marines as Ma Deuce.
11141449
Maybe they did! There’s at least four other movies they were shown that I haven’t mentioned other than the three I did--they’ve seen Warrior, Apollo 13, and Braveheart. But what else...?
When it comes down to it, they’re not stupid. They know that even if they escaped, they have no hope in hell of surviving in a Cloven-controlled countryside when corrupted mages can instantly sense their magic use. That kind of limits their options for now, but later?
Part of it’s the cider, certainly, but their anger at what happened to them is very real. The cider just enhances that the same way it does everything else the desire or feel. Now that they’re aware of it, we’ll see if they can control it. Gilda doesn’t want to be a slave to the cider, and ultimately, neither do they.
11141609
Thanks! And you’re quite welcome.
I’m glad. If you liked the dialog, you’re going to get even more of it next chapter, including a surprising revelation. And as for the Ibex, they will be major factor going forward as they lend their own skills and magic to the defense of the Kingdom, if very grudgingly at first.
Getting comments like this is definitely part of the fun! They make my day and make me feel appreciated, motivating me to write more. Thanks as always for the feedback!
11141805
You will get your wish in due course! And find out what relation the Changelings have to the Cloven in the process.
11141812
Just remember, all the equipment in the world doesn’t mean shit without proper training and most importantly, a will to fight. Afghanistan proved that in spades.
They do indeed!
And your interest in seeing the Ibex get it on is noted.
All I’ll say for now is, you’re right to wonder.
11142123
It makes my day to hear you say that. Thanks, and I look forward to your feedback again!
11144360
Pretty sure Changelings want the Cloven extinct when they already feared the Griffon vs Pony war...
You know i just read the Eros first chapter and reading this chapter now, it feels like a perfect continued timeline with all the insults here from Fortrakt to Gilda.
I wonder if the Marines can have the female Ibex persuaded by the power of Stamina via Snu-Snu
11144374
Yet more comments I failed to respond quickly to...
You’ll find out what the Changelings think of the Cloven in due course. It’s even possible they have some relation to them.
11152984
Thanks! Insults are how the two (mostly) show they like each other. Though they’ll also pull them out to make the point that the other is being an idiot.
11153034
Can’t say I’d envisioned *that* scene, but it’s quite possible that the Ibex girls will yet bite off a bit more than they can chew if they think they can bend humans to their will, sexually or otherwise. But it’s also fair to say that their magic grants them some sexual abilities and the ability to indulge certain kinks that griffons don’t.
Well this clarrifies things slightly. Though still dissapointing that no one is thinking about the cloven strategically. Do the cloven know what the humans represent? If they don't, how long will that information take to propagate through their command loop?
Once it does, there's a good chance they'll switch from 'kill em all' to 'catch just one human'. Forget knowing how guns work, even access to a basic high school education (and many marines have more than that) would be a massive boon to them.
Well, the first time at least. And assuming they haven't gotten the information already via the infiltration and dissent tactics that Gilda described.
11328048
Hard to think strategically when your immediate priority is survival and you’re under constant threat of enemy attack. At this point, the Cloven are quite aware of humans from earlier engagements and have made them priority targets, wanting to gain possession of their knowledge and weapons.
You forget that for the Cloven, killing them is catching them. If they can even kill even one Marine and then possess them, they instantly gain knowledge of human weapons and tactics, and can tailor their own appropriately even without having access to human firepower. If they could kill Imlay’s entire squad, they’d have a small arsenal of firearms and some as-yet unseen heavier weapons at their disposal. If that happens, the outlook for the Kingdom would suddenly become a lot more bleak.
They already have it. Recall that they’re a modified form of hive mind, with the Cloven Overlords able to absorb and disseminate all the information their parasites gain access to from captured corpses. Given enough time, they will overrun the humans, and believe me when I say they don’t give a damn about the losses they suffer doing it, just because the potential prize is so great.
Ibex might pull a Doomguy on Cloven forces yet
This story reminds me of a Harry Potter x MLP story where they made a awesome first contact inside the United Kingdom in England.
Best political and military story running on Earth side.
But this is definitely the best on Equestrian side, without humans screwing it up.
I can see the Russian be best buddys and most deadly enemys towards one another at the same time...
Nope, they do flocking though. The same in the end, just more birb and feathers.
Good point, the maker of 'Lord of the rings' went to war with his friends and only he survived.
War is never about winning, rather making the enemy losing more.
And anyone surviving get left alone when mental if physical problems plage them...
The movie about Forest Gump comes to mind.
Emotion are high, though no releave of it is in sight.
Welcome to war... it is the wirst state one can find themself in.
I wonder who has all the stuff of the humans and where? Would be a damn shame if the video recording of the cider fueled night would be destroyed
We know Ponies and Griffons have a thing for the humans... who will whoo the Ibex I wonder? And get themself a buck?
The enemy of my enemy can be useful along they don't stab us in the back... unless it's sex stuff
Charing intelligence information can be a huge help, in both directions.
But one must wonder... what taste better?
Griffon, Ibex or human females?
