For those curious if it’s actually possible to go Rambo and hip-fire a .50 in real life? The answer is: sort of.
And if we’re talking about an M2 (Ma Deuce):
So you more or less can, but you’ll need to be braced or the recoil will make you do a two-step with each couple rounds. It’ll also be very inaccurate because you can’t keep it stable on target. And for those of you who’d like to see an actual Claymore Mine demonstrated:
O yeah! Update! Text to speech is a gooo!!!
Oh boy, some more of the nasty surprises for the cloven. Good that humans have a good 100 years of advantage when it comes to the age old question of armor vs fire power.
Is the standard body armor working against the spikes?
I really hope Fortrakt gets a spare M249 SAW for the flight. He wouldn't even need optics as long as it has an optical laser right?
Damn now I'm pumped for the next chapter
land - could be added here?
Bloody fine chapter
The power of overkill did has it effects
They are in a really tight spot and a singel converted corpse inside their ranks will doom them all to the Cloven. Collective mind and memory harvesting is a bitch...
Amazing chapter, and i must say, some one got very trigger happy there
Now just to wait for more delicious chapters
I wonder what kind of interfacing Magic the Ibex used, so, either the laptops the Ibex got didnt have a password, or the password where just four numbers, and they only get to use the interface with Magic, in which case, the human owner is an ignorant idiot, or the Ibex's Magic can actually bypass any code, transistor, procesor, etc. with the exact amount of energy it needed, so Magic do a lot of the thinking for them, because we know the Ibex don't know all the complexity of a computer, BUT magic do apperently.
In another note, do the marines hav Javelins? or similar? they are the only weapons light enought to carry by them and/or griffins, that can work in Dragon somewhat, other weapons are more costly and heavier, thought better for Dragon's.
11199733
It’s the most important tool in my writing arsenal now. I’ve listened to this chapter recited five times today just to try and catch editing errors or clumsy wording. And probably made around thirty corrections or changes since the chapter was published.
11199751
And they had some nasty surprises of their own!
You’re right. You’ll see how the Marine and civilian body armor fared next chapter.
He doesn’t need optics because he can see just fine in the dark, like all griffies. Still, I think a SAW would slow him down at a time they need speed and elusiveness. That’s not to say he won’t get his talons on a gun or two later, though!
And sadly, I have to make you wait again. Firefly has first priority right now as far as war stories go. I’m writing two chapters of Firefly per one of Feathered Hearts right now.
11199765
There was an error there. it should have said “alight” instead of “light”. I’ve corrected it now. No need for ‘land’ in that instance.
11199766
Thanks!
And will continue to do so! The griffies get off on battle, so...
You got that right. So they eventually need to find a way to take the fight to the Cloven directly and hit their ability to do that. they cannot win this war on the defensive because any war of attrition automatically favors the Cloven.
11199812
Hey, he didn’t fire that cannon! Came awfully close, though...
I appreciate the enthusiasm and the kind words! But as I said in the Author’s Notes, I’ll only be coming back to this sporadically for the time being as Firefly is my first priority right now. I’ll try to turn out one new chapter of C&C for every two chapters of Firefly I do through the start of summer, at least.
11199900
Or they stole the laptop while it was unlocked. Or they simply magically picked Marco’s memory for the passcode. It’s been established already that magic can indeed interface with human technology, and the Ibex are very magic-oriented. If Starlight can figure out how to send a text to a phone and receive one back, then I don’t think it’s that big a step for our magical mountain goats to be able to play movies off it and share them via telepathy or something.
They do, and have had them on standby given the threat of dragons. But given the dragons haven’t yet made an appearance (because the Cloven can’t possess or read the memories of carbonized corpses), they’ve had no reason to pull them out and use them yet. Don’t worry--that will change soon.
11200012
I could Guess that Starlight, having more access to human acknowlede, could eventually manipulate to a cerrain degree computers and human gadgets in general, BUT the Ibex, i doudt, it is more belivable the reading of memory for passcode and the manipulation of a laptop.
Excellent chapter as always, with more birds loving the sounds of freedom. Soon enough they'll be bachelors parties in American firing ranges.
Though I just realized that Giraldi never pulled back the charging handle to load the round in
11199751
Not much, Kevlar was never meant for knifes or crossbolts, ceramics plates could but it only covers a small area and they couldn't repair it. Any wounded from the spikes would have to hope it wasn't hit in a bad spot and bandage the area during battle, unless you have medical personal to spare.
Optical lasers have to zeroed in for different ranges, it's not meant for beyond close ranges. He wouldn't need an IR laser either because he can just fine at night.
11200001
Still need to figure out the best counter to the air threats other than sky griffions, SPAAA is still the best option but the US still rely on only AA missiles. The Patriot missile is a giant missile the size of a telephone pole, but it isn't a good option for a swarm though it is perfect for dragons and airships. The UN will have to ask other countries to lend some SPAAA.
11200052
I thought most body armor has the anti stab layer in it somewhere? Or is that just for law enforcement?
Also I was assuming that the laser ist already on the gun and zeroed in, if you have it in a storage gem, you don't need to care much about how much is put on to it.
Starlight Glimmer, surely?
11200200
Yeek. With apologies, it’s fixed now.
11200142
There are dedicated anti-stab vests. A lot of UK police have such available to them.
this chapter sure got intense fast.
there is a plan and it looks like the Ibex are kind of helping for now.
i am liking the righting plan for the summer , just don't burn your Muse out on the story it is way to good to just stop.
11200012
That's okey, I got hooked on that too
Bit more serious though. This will need some deep cooperation from all sides. If the whole continent blacked out this is not a mere local outbreak but already global level issue.
Ponies and humans better get to it and do some rapid RnD. And really we need heavy reinforcement. Bring in the fleet, few carriers and escort and some nuke subs.
And yeah, so the Ibex watched human movies, war movies as well for sure, and some of those Ibex been killed and their brains sucked dry what they saw. So yes this need to be escalated.
> "The expended shells were flung to the side and rained down to the ground beside him, a score of corrupted and pure Cloven creatures dead before him."
Hi, gun nut here, and just wanted to help a little. The M2 Browning actually ejects shells DOWNWARD, as the bolt is completely exposed underneath and just allows the spent casing to fall out when opened up (with assistance from an ejector to help it on it's way). It DOES, however, eject the disintegrating link out the side.
11201430
Appreciate the heads-up. I’ve changed it to the following:
That work?
11201655
One flyer-fired spike impacted his armor, partially penetrating it as he shortly had all the attention of the faltering Cloven attack. And then another. But he ignored the hits and the blood streaming down his side as he then flapped his wings and took to the air, firing down on the rapidly thinning group until the entire belt of bullets had been sucked up into the greedy weapon’s tube. The remains of the rail the rounds were attached to were flung to the side as the expended shells rained down to the ground beneath the big gun, a score of corrupted and pure Cloven creatures dead before him.
Yes this works out perfectly. If you have other gun questions, I'm rather knowledgeable, and am always looking to help people.
I really enjoy this story :) That's all, wish I could give another like...
11201957
Thanks! Appreciate it. As it happens, I already have three current or former servicemembers prereading, and I’m not entirely without knowledge myself despite having never served. That doesn’t mean there isn’t stuff we don’t miss, though, so feel free to call it out whenever you see something wrong. I want this to be as correct as possible.
11202087
Hey, I love hearing stuff like this! And so do I, believe me. If I’m lucky, I’ll have a fifth of the original’s likes someday. But there was only one DEL, and he’s long departed.
I don't blame Giraldi for getting a raging boner--I fucking got a hardon from that fight, too!
11199721
Heh, I once saw an old movie about a Pacific encounter in WWII where a big CPO picked up a .50 cal because it was useless aiming out and not up where he needed it, and started hipshooting at several Japanese planes buzzing them from overhead. Those machine guns are fucking massive hunks of metal, so much so that their recoil is less than many sport rifles! Pretty much, if you could pick one up, you can shoot it like that--but yeah, you'll still want to brace yourself!
This chapter hit all the good spots.
Love how the cider boosting just saved the day.
This is like Stalingrad in WW2. At some point the body count thrown at the enemy negates the equicment advantage. Especially if the enemy is only disposed by headshots or shooting them to a chunky mass...
Well... The Enemy now knows Stealth spells of the Ibex and other stuff...
If i where the Cloven Overlord i rather collect information and go for cloak and dagger tactics instead of 'ZERGGG RUUUSSSHHH'.
Time plays the Cloven in the hands. So a possible retreat should have a great underground base have prepared. Since Cloven maintenance is simplyer and more effective, a defensiv war would make perfect sence. Especially if they do it like the Ibex with stealthy kidnappings to steal every races secrets.
What is the motivation and trigger for this return i wonder...
11203182
Exactly what I was going for!
I very vaguely remember that scene though I don’t recall the movie. But I remember reading later that some considered the movie’s realism ruined by it since they claimed that the .50’s recoil would have knocked him flatter than the Zero he shot down. Based on these videos, I consider it possible but very impractical to hip-fire one. Even if you can heft it and stay upright doing it, there’s just no way to keep it stable enough to fire it accurately at any sort of distance like that, let alone use it to shoot down a plane. Here, Giraldi’s an earth griffon who’s much bigger and stronger than the average Marine, but he’s also at close range, and even he couldn’t fire it continuously without losing his ability to aim it.
11203413
Glad to hear it! For me writing it, as well.
Just making the point that’s it not all about sex with the cider. There’s also another side benefit of it that’s been hinted at but will be shown more directly later.
And especially if your enemy’s defense is static, which the marines and griffons basically are at that steadholt.
They’re absorbing knowledge from their captured corpses, yes. I leave it to you to decide how the Ibex knew about that spell.
When shock tactics don’t work, subterfuge and maneuver must be brought into play. They still love the Zerg rush, though, for the fear and despair it inflicts.
You can’t sit back and wait for the Cloven to attack you because their numbers are pretty much inexhaustible. You have to go after their soldier factories and their Overlords directly. Don’t think the griffons and Ibex don’t already know this, and once the initial shock of the invasion has worn off, we’ll see what they can do with it.
This is another question that DEL never answered in the original, so it’s up to me to come up with the answer. I’ve got some ideas, but they still need some fleshing out. Fortunately, there’s plenty of time for me to do so.
Appreciate your comments, as always! Look forward to seeing you back on Firefly later.
11203413
11204077
Of course, if the Cloven were to pull that stunt, how could anyone ever find out where the soldier factories and overlords are??
Probably something that Bob did.... ♫
...and you'd feel sorry for the Cloven if you knew.
11199900
Most data stored on a hard drive is completely exposed to anyone with physical access to the hardware. It's trivial to access any information stored on a computer unless you go the extra length to prevent that
11206450
You need to have the acknowlege to extract the información from a hard drive, so unless the Ibex have computers and know how to use them un a tecnical level, i don't see how they could get the información, barring mind control or carelesness from the soldiers or civilian part, the Ibex could get information from Equestria better than the human military in griffostone, so it depends of the the Ibex already got plenty of information there or not.
And that is why they mounted .50 cals on planes like the Mustang or on vehicles like the Sherman or Pershing as secondary weapons. That amount of firepower was enough to cut through any target that got unlucky enough to get in the cross hairs.
11209131
It’s also why such an old design like the M2 Browning (Ma Deuce) is still in use, even today. Sometimes the old stuff remains the best.
11209527
True that!
Never mind that queen was powered by the Princess of Food herself.
In any case... yeah, there are plenty more Cloven where that came from. This isn't a good plan by any stretch of the imagination, but it's the best one they have. We know Gilda and Marco make it out given the prologue, but there's still the question of how many others make it out with them.
Also, dang it, Marco, you frightened the goats.
11211426
That, and Celly held back because she couldn’t win without escalating the fight to the point of endangering everyone there. It taught her she’d been neglecting her lesser techniques and old combat training. You can bet she’s rectified that now.
We’ll just have to see as I haven’t worked most of that out yet. There are going to be casualties, the question is who and when.
Just making the point here that they’re right to be worried about humans. Some of those movies he had would scare the hell out of anycreature unfamiliar with modern human society or history.
Maybe they could get some practice teleporting big metal poles into the upper atmosphere to figure out how to aim an orbital bombardment.
11216887
If anyone is interested in a slightly used orbital bombardment system with which to practice with, there just happens to be one for sell on Ebay.
Look up "Cobra".
11216887
Well, I guess Cobra Commander has to raise funds to pay off his debts to Destro somehow...
Thanks again firesight for another couple of amazing chapters. Sorry for not getting a chance to thank you for the chapters sooner, but lifes been pretty hectic this past few weeks with a new job and living place. I really enjoyed this updated version of the battle from the origonal story and found it both more action packed and more emotional for our beloved characters. There was alot of little additions to these chapters from the origonal story, like the scene with the mother and cub survivors, which added alot more depth to each chapter and made them all the more engaging to read. I'm excited as ever to see more chapters in the near future and wish you all the best with writing your next chapters. Thanks again for all the hard work and time you put into bringing us these amazing reads, and as always have fun writing. Cheers!

With apologies, I’m a week late on replying to this. It’s definitely not because I didn’t like your comment!
No problem! I know all about life getting in the way, believe me. Your thanks is appreciated all the same. Seeing comments like this really make my day.
That’s exactly what I was going for, thanks. It’s good to hear that readers of the original are enjoying this so much and appreciate the extra content. Plenty more extra content is coming, needless to say, with a lot of human and griffon (and eventually pony!) baddassery included.
Thanks again! You’ll definitely be seeing more of the cubs and their mothers later. I didn’t bring in the latter without intending to use them in the story.
It’s a lot easier to have fun writing when I pick up comments like this. I always enjoy seeing your name pop up in my notifications because I know it’s going to be a nice meaty comment I can read and enjoy repeatedly. So thanks again, and I apologize for the delay in replying.
Finished the story so far and I love every chapter. Hoping that the next one will be out very soon.
11274310
Appreciate it! I have a few other things to work on first, but expect the next one in a month or two.
Orbital Boop incoming!
*BBBBBOOOOOooooooooooP!
You just got booped on the snoot! ♡
yooooo
when are you continuing this?
11303084
Within the next month, with the goal of a new chapter by mid-August. There’s another story I’m trying to finish first. Read my blogs if you want updates on what I’m working on currently and what I plan to work on the weeks ahead.
11303451
aaahhhh
I just noticed that Gildas tail could fit a Spike at the end. Unfortunately do tails have their own head so it might be a bad idea even for a one shot weapon like a Speznas special
*knife with a one shot pistol in the hilt*
Or

11324505
Hey. I was wondering what happened to you, since you hadn’t commented on the latest chapters of Harmonic Resonance. Good to see you again!
Interesting. I’d never seen those before. They look like they could ruin your day if you’re not expecting it. But for Gilda, her tail doesn’t have sufficient grasping ability to use something like that. A pony’s might, though.
And I just realized I never replied to your previous comment...
11294970
Red alert! Incoming boop! Ready retaliation! Every boop must be answered in kind!
*sneezes* Dammit, my boop allergy is acting up again...
Just without trying to avoid Termination of the enemy.
Cloven have a baaad day...
