For those curious, the image of the repeating crossbow was borrowed from the 2004 movie Van Helsing, which in my view is criminally underrated. You can see it in action here against the vampire brides of Dracula:
And as for the primitive rifle, a simple search of “Steampunk musket” found it on a pinterest site, so I don’t know its original source.

I agree, I liked the music for it
Damn what a mean cliffhanger.
Looking forward to the day after tomorrow!
A very nice and long chapter!
Makes me wonder if the griffins let it slip that they've figured out the guns.
Inb4 some griffin calling a magazine a quiver xD
Things are getting heated, now we wait for the final talk with ambassadors, and with respect of guns, the griffons had the magic alternatives, that is why they gave up on guns, while humans didn't have that option.
Magnificent chapter. Great development overall.
Fantastic worldbuilding. Loved the culture.
How this situation will be resolved? Guess the War cuts off any way to return to the Portal...
11084155
I can't believe someone other than me has seen this movie. Did you know there was a game for it too? The DVD came with a demo disc too.
Bitch Face is already shipped off to Equestria i guess? Since they would still be en route to Equestria or back, they have some extra time left...
I guess Tara will play message bird? Otherwise Gilda can't sneak Marco Beak kisses on letters
The enemy of the enemy... Don't make them allies BUT they sure give a common goal... So... Guess Marco gets to cuddle Gilda rather sooner than later?
11084278
I maintain that Van Helsing's transformation was the best looking example to grace the silver screen!
What dicks.
11084216
Quick note, quivers store arrows (or bolts), a magazine is where the powder for cannons is stored, whether on ship or in forts, as the griffons didn't go the gunpowder route, quiver would be the closest equivalent ...
Wait, they made a sequil and no body told me?!?
I got to read this, now.

“Come into my parlor, Ted. I have cookies!” -Reykan
Yay, I got an update notice this time!
I can understand the logic and lack of said easier now. Things that to us are just common sense, the Griffons never learned. When they explained their experience with explosive powder on their world, I never would have guessed it would be more dangerous than ours, nor that they had an alternative. Magic, even if they don't use it like unicorns is an everyday thing for them. Huh, wonder what happens once they start working together in joint research... Technomagics! Fun times... though it makes me wonder, add in magic, does war still never change?
As to the Captain... eh, much as we don't like it, he is still just doing his duty. Right now, I blame the Ambassador who clearly is letting him do so.
Huh. My Star Wars reference was accidentally prescient. Neat!
And yeah, early firearms are so clumsy and unreliable, it's not surprising that some societies will stick with the crossbow. Especially when the propellant they're working with is even more volatile than black powder and many of their adversaries can ignite it at range.
Smile when you eat the scones.
Yeah, not much of a surprise with the ambassador's decision. The question is what comes next. Especially given how this arc will end...
11084278
I only caught it on TV. the game wasn't bad either if I remember correctly.
11084278
Most people I know have seen it and enjoyed.
11084216
I’m notorious for them, sorry.
As long as it’s not the movie!
Thanks! The next one will be even longer. Much longer.
The answer is in the next chapter.
Well, it’s the only thing they have that they can associate it with!
11084231
Exactly. And Napoleonic musketry tactics wouldn’t have worked for them anyway because they can fly and close distances to enemy forces very quickly, making 2-3xs a minute of volley fire almost useless. Realistically, they could have taken any gun-equipped human force with crossbows alone probably up until the turn of this century, and even then, they could have probably fought the belligerents at parity in WW1.
11084240
Thank you very much! Sounds like I hit all the marks I was aiming for with this one.
It’s a fair bet, and you can also bet the Equestrians would temporarily seal the portal to make sure the Cloven couldn’t get through it. But more on that later in the story.
I’ve still got the movie somewhere. I might have watched it a dozen times; I liked it so much. I really wish they would have made a sequel, but it was only a modest hit at best.
And no, I didn’t know there was a game for it, but that doesn’t surprise me. It’s certainly game-worthy.
11084342
Dana? She’s long gone and by now has passed back through the portal. She disappeared without explanation from the original story, so she’s disappeared with reason from this one. So she’ll miss all the fun with the Cloven. Pity. I’m sure Marco would have loved to put a bullet through her head if her corpse was possessed by the Cloven.
You’ll get some hints of what’s planned next chapter. Suffice it to say, both the Marines and Gilda’s griffon are willing to help them get some quality time before Marco departs, with or without Goldberg’s permission.
Common goal will best describe it. That goal being they don’t want to all be killed and consumed by the Cloven!
11084415
I need to watch it again. He made a gorgeous werewolf, unquestionably.
11084435
There are dicks on both sides, but there are also plenty of non-dicks on both sides, as the next chapter will make clear.
11084444
Exactly. And on our side of the portal, the terms ‘clip’ and ‘magazine’ are sometimes used interchangeably, though they’re not at all the same thing.
11084457
Not so much a sequel as a remake. Hope you enjoy!
11084629
All true. There’s also the fact that classic Napoleonic musketry tactics wouldn’t work at all for them because they can fly and close the range to enemy forces quickly, meaning a single volley isn’t going to do much to stop them from reaching you and mixing it up with spears, steel claws and crossbows at close quarters. They don’t generally WANT to fight on the ground in battle lines or they give up one of their biggest advantages.
It does not. And far as smart as the griffies are, they could figure our weapons out quickly once they get their talons on them. They couldn’t reproduce them right away, but it would certainly give them avenues of investigation to pursue. Ditto for the Minotaurs, who I have as the best machinists in the Tellusian world.
In his mind, he’s doing his duty, yes, and he doesn’t give a damn what anybody thinks of him over it. It’s both his greatest virtue and worst fault. There is a reason he’s acting this way, and you’ll find it out later. As Staff Sergeant Stafford once said, let’s just say he’s had very some very bad experiences with trusting locals in the past.
11084644
That’s where I got the name from! So yes.
To say nothing of the fact that being able to launch only two or three volleys a minute when you could quickly close with an enemy through the air and fire off a dozen crossbow bolts in that time doesn’t exactly recommend muskets as effective weapons to an airborne race.
I’d been saving that line for a while.
It’s pretty much what had to happen given the altered story. But it doesn’t upend the story because all it does is change the reason Gilda and company will be heading out on air carriages. Put another way, the Cloven won’t give a damn why they’re out there; the attack will still happen.
as if this is going to end well. now things are going to get messy.
11085122
Very shortly, indeed it will!
Well, damnit.
11085215
Marco’s luck finally ran out. At this point, with both the Ambassador and Captain against him, there really wasn’t any realistic way out of it. But it’s not a spoiler to say that very shortly, none of this shit will matter.
Griffonic weapons development is... weird. Which makes sense considering they developed in a world were the common soldiers had innate access to both flight and magic. Though the adoption of the crossbow in particular by the griffons does not make sense to me. Maybe it is used by formations, both airborne and ground based, in massed volleys against flying targets. Individually though a dropped rock would likely be better against a foe on the ground and they would rarely hit airborne targets. Though perhaps against magic wielders the higher velocity and shorter travel time of bolts is necessary to avoid having the projectile flung back at you. Aaaaand I think I just rationalized for myself why crossbows would be adopted by the griffins. Lol.
And of course their failure to develop firearms makes tons of sense. The pressures that led to human adoption are either nonexistent or severely lessoned. It also explains some of the apparent idiosyncrasies in the Gilda's discussion of human weapons development. Humans by all appearances could equip far better armor than griffins (especially if it is comparable that worn by equestrians) and did not have to fear having rocks dropped on them. Thus well armored infantry and cavalry could not be reliably killed at range. So while griffins seem to have developed a preference for ranged combat humans with rare exception erred towards melee weaponry until the gun. Even then it took several iterations and the addition of the bayonet which effectively made guns melee weapons (often dominantly so) before the gun became the weapon of choice. And of course the risk of shot to fall from the muzzle when pointed downwards which largely didn't effect humans would probably be a major issue for a race which can fly.
Also, lol. The griffins come from a martial culture who's soldiers seem to spend far longer in the military and train far more in hand to hand. The marines learn why engaging in melee duels with them
is a bad idea. Who would've thought?
11084155
love that movie
11084216
Hey, at least they didn't call it a clip.
11084629
The last chapter of flash of blades, rumble of guns intensifies
11084770
Lol no. Hard disagree there. As previously stated human armor was very resistant to arrows and bolts. Far more so than current perception seems to believe. Then you throw in things like human fortifications, mortars filled with grape shot, etc. and the griffins would have a bad time. Unless there's some magical shenanigans not yet revealed to the readers which would change things (an admittedly very real possibility) actual victory in mich of the medieval era would be determined by a number of factors beyond simple racial trates and the tactics and weaponry used. Terrain, numbers, political unity, etc. But by the nepolionic era the griffins as they are portrayed now (again precluding magic) would definitely be below parity.
11084783
Reeeeeeeeeeeee
11084786There’s also the fact that classic Napoleonic musketry tactics wouldn’t work at all for them because they can fly and close the range to enemy forces quickly, meaning a single volley isn’t going to do much to stop them from reaching you and mixing it up with spears, steel claws and crossbows at close quarters. One shot was never enough even amongst humans. That's why pikes and later bayonets were a vital part of gun formations until after wwii. Melee didn't cease to be a domineering force on the battlefield until shortly before wwi. Human forces would be more than capable of mixing it up with griffins at close range. From what's been shown so far in the story I wouldn't place my money of the griffins winning that sort of fight.
11084786
Yea you've kinda gotta get some infrastructure and expertise before you can start fielding firearms in appreciable numbers. And that will take time if they intend on domestic production.

First interspecies love from outside their dimensional walls is a historical event! ♤♡
11139388
Oh, she’d definitely have some things to say about it if she was there!
Actually, it isn’t. The first interspecies love from outside their dimensional walls is described in my first fimfiction story, Five Star Service: A Gentleman for Mares Tale. Give that a read sometime.
Should have seen it coming. 'Gentleverse' is not an intrusion fiction its a social fiction. It's setting literally revolves around prostitution and mistreatment that is for some reason called dominance.
Here the main promise used to be - 'Chickencats don't know what a gun is and there will be a realization, an Awe moment. "It looks like we were wrong and humans aren't actually weakass monkey-dweebs."
But we can't have that, because "Dominance".
So chickens figured everything out behind closed doors. Also, they have gunpowder and badass steampunky magicu tech of their own, so who cares.
In the end, humans are monkey dweebs good only to be diddled by big stronk furry creatures, and not even marine life form has a chance against plot armor.
11162444
We can at least agree on this. You should have seen a G4M story using similar themes to other G4M stories as it is, in fact, a G4M story.
I had to reread your post multiple times to parse its meaning but I think you're suggesting that the tellurian races are exploiting humanity. That makes sense from a certain POV I disagree with but cannot fiction be whatever it wants to be? Why condemn a story for simply existing?
Your second paragraph seems to contradict the first. Are you upset with the Gentlemanverse as a whole or Firesight's interpretation?
I care! Did you not see how vastly superior human firearms were to the steampunk weapons? There was still the 'Awe moment' as you put it. Firesight just added depth and realism to the big reveal. The griffons are smart, resourceful and proud. Further, they had a mission to find out as much about humans as possible. Why is it so unreasonable to assume griffons would figure at least part of the story out on their own?
Again, you're sending very mixed messages here. Is your beef with the Gentlemanverse or with Firesight? How do the griffons have plot armor? They got pulled out of certain death by humanity. We saw this happen after the first attack by the Cloven.
If you dislike "big stronk furry creatures", I would have nothing against it but the Gentlemanverse is filled with them. Your narrative about intrusion fiction versus social fiction can't obscure the fact that G4M has always been social in nature.
11162534
Guess I offended your religious beliefs or something.
A platoon of soldiers in a world where humans are playthings. Interesting premise, but should have known better since 'Gents 4 mares' universe has nothing to do with the exploration of colliding worlds.
What kind of soldiers do you send in a newly discovered, populated world? Best of the best tip of the spear, edge of the knife. Professionals. Yet they all need to be 'educated' in the art of 'look but do not touch'. And a single bird can bitchslap three of them in the same day, one after another. She's not even anything special, just a guard with four years of training. Not very believable, unless she's wrapped in plot armor she'd need for the Gentsverse setting. And in that setting, it works, but I should have known better than to expect anything else since it is g4m universe.
Now with this particular story, there is a problem that I'm pointing out. A broken promise.
The Promise was: local yokels think that guns are beating sticks and humans are weak, but sooner or later they will discover that they were wrong.
I've been shown how they trash humanity over and over for many chapters, but instead of getting slapped across the beak with hooman know-how, griffies figured everything out all by themselves, nice and quiet - Promise is broken.
Not only that, but griffins are suddenly quite advanced themselves. Thought they were backward? They've got Van Helsing's auto crossbows and magical gunpowder, that's on top of actual magic users.
At this point, the Payoff should involve a tank division an aircraft carrier, and a mushroom cloud on the horizon for it to work. Is there a mushroom cloud in later chapters?
Do you not see under which chapter this comment is? What does it tell you?
11162710
I haven't mentioned religion anywhere in my comment. You on the other hand have indicated a distaste for the idea of griffons and humans having sex. Perhaps this is true about yourself?
You're misrepresenting the material by saying humans are playthings. Not entirely sure what you mean by "colliding worlds" but the universe is nothing but exploring the interaction of different cultures so that statement is wrong on its face. Next paragraph.
You weren't promised anything. You're upset, I take it, because Firesight changed the original cause of events from "griffons find out by accident to "griffons find out on their own". Look, you're entitled to whatever opinion you want to have but I'm challenging you on some of your points and you can either discuss this in good faith or continue insulting my intelligence and the quality of the work on highly questionable grounds. If that's the case, the people reading this story will come to their own conclusions which will likely be unfavorable towards you. Maybe you don't even care in which case I won't bother replying to you again.
You want Firesight to write in an aircraft carrier going through a man-sized portal located on an island?
I didn't notice which chapter you were commenting under. That mistake is on me. Are you willing to reconsider some of the arguments you've made in your post and acknowledge your own mistakes?
Polite conversation to verbal defeat the enemy.
The end always breaks my heart
11350981
Or not-so-polite in the case of Gilda, who’s not normally one to hold her tongue.
11422675
And Gilda’s as well.
Culture and crossing the interspecies barrier is what keeps us fascinated towards aliens.
I think technology advances are a close second.
Anime or Star Trek kind of entertainment in VR would be the most entertaining thing for us all.
Imagen A.I get so advances where we could ask them to let us experience stories like this one.
That would be so awesome.
Or build video game setting we could go trough.
Resident Evils zombie survivel or perhaps starship troopers alien insect confrontations.
MLP Canon or even better Fimfiction stories...
That would be epic entertainment!
There is currently a trend of a.i story telling.
I wonder if a a.i. telling this story with france military has them not verbal attacking, rather than striking Griffons with Baguettes.
Maybe the British would be a better choice with tea and Buiscets?
Actually he already did and continue to do so
Funny, in America dependable on the exact district it's more like 'Shot first, double tap and ask never a question'.
I wonder if the American gavourment I declared mad for openly selling guns to civilians.
If not for the lobbyists keeping it up, there might not be literally hundred of thousand confirmed firearm related killings. With the offical count, not to mention the inofficially estimated true murder count.
Or the fact that less than 10 year old children not even understanding death as a concept can shot guns at some places...
Or have the physical attributes to control weapon recoil of a weapon getting fired.
Reading the title '16: Guns and Roses', getting always something along this in my mind:
