The Bricklayer

Slow down, you're doing fine, you can't be everything you want to be, before your time... -Vienna, The Stranger: Billy Joel. (Any Pronouns)

T

Manehatten, a crime and filth-ridden city. It's always been that way, at least for one Philip Finder, a hardboiled detective and PI for hire. Lately, something's changed. He and his partner, former thief, and now security consultant Daring Do are hearing rumors of monsters in the streets. A slash of serial killings, victims frozen alive. Dealers, selling what are called "Gaia Memories" to unwitting citizens. And now a mysterious woman, called Shroud showing up at their doorstep claiming to know how they can stop the monsters.

Just two simple words that will change their partnership forevermore.

\ Fang! / \ Nazca! /

"Daring, are you willing to ride with the Devil?"

(Noireverse belongs to Ponyjosiah13)

(Warning, comments contain Spoilers. Thank you, Layton...)

Chapters (7)
Comments ( 58 )

Other than your weird name choice for the victim that was discussed briefly on Discord, good chapter.

Also, lets hope Philip isn't half-boiled (sorry, I had to).

9120012
Yes, well the joke has to be made at some point I suppose. If you didn't do it, someone else would have.

9120060 Yeah, its good to get it over with, reminds me I need to link you to a section of a video talking about Shoutarou as hard-boiled sometime.

Say, for example, you had a memory based on the mighty Quetzalcoatlus.

Now, count up your references: 1

of ponies who died from Memory Overdose

Don't remember that part

“Lefty!” a voice barked out to Philip as he entered the room

Huh, clever nickname

You moron, you want to shatter them upon touch? Cause that’s what’s going to happen soon as you do so! They’ve been frozen solid, or haven’t you noticed?

Now, count up your references: 2

I knew from the start, no thanks to your deodorant,

Just to be sure: Now, count up your references: 3

in his gloves holding up a piece of tattered white cloth of some unknown fabric and on it, icy blue blood.

How can a Dopant cut himself on a broken window :rainbowhuh:

There was even a ancient pony’s skull

Not a direct reference but still: Now, count up your references: 4

Cockroach

I know I'm grasping at straws here, but come on: Now, count up your references: 5

Money

Now, count up your references: 6

Sadly, it got to the point where Philip was forced to fire upon him. The memory ejected itself, and the police were left with another body to burn.

Ok, so dopants are vulnerable to bullets. Ok, interesting. So these dopants are more like Showa era kaijin.

Beast

Now, count up your references: 7

Philip would normally have used his motorbike which he called the Typhoon

Now, count up your references: 8

heard about this Smilodon Dopant, and this Dopant seemingly based on a Triceratops going head to head recently?

Now, count up your references: 9; 10

Bandages covered her entire face, even her eyes. Why she would wear sunglasses then, was a mystery but yet there they were on her face. In her lap was a thick black briefcase.

hey Shroud, oh and: Now, count up your references: 11

Really, I must thank Layton13 and Ruinqueen of Oblivion for supporting me in this idea,

I still have no idea how to respond to something like this. Seriously :twilightblush: Thanks.

9120067
Huh, I think I know what video you are talking about.

9120079

of ponies who died from Memory Overdose

Don't remember that part

Remember Isaka and what happened to him after the Weather Memory was broken via Accel Trial? That's what I'm referencing there.

“Lefty!” a voice barked out to Philip as he entered the room

Huh, clever nickname

Yeah, the Villain in Glasses, the same guy who suggested Robert's catchphrase in Wild Access be the same as Captain Marvelous said I absolutely had to call Philip Lefty at some point.

in his gloves holding up a piece of tattered white cloth of some unknown fabric and on it, icy blue blood.

How can a Dopant cut himself on a broken window

Yeah, one of the things I learned in the writer's workshop I took was, and this ties into Dopants being hurt by bullets like old Shown era Kaijin was that somehow clues had to be left behind so why not a Dopant cutting himself to leave behind a blood trace?

Sadly, it got to the point where Philip was forced to fire upon him. The memory ejected itself, and the police were left with another body to burn.

Ok, so dopants are vulnerable to bullets. Ok, interesting. So these dopants are more like Showa era kaijin.

Yeah, I would look to A to Z, the Gaia Memories of Fate for evidence of this as one T2 Memory using Dopant got hurt by a regular bullets from a gun, but since Philip and Daring and the rest of the police force are mere mortals faced with an army of monsters I had to water them down somehow.

9120067
On another note, who do you think is the Ice Age Dopant? Tidal Fury, or Grape Vine? Both have probable cause motive-wise, with Grape having a restraining order against Cherry (Still not sorry about the name) and Tidal actually being a Gaia Memory dealer who knows, or at least thinks his wife is cutting off older affairs and does have a history of cheating on men.

9120094

Remember Isaka and what happened to him after the Weather Memory was broken via Accel Trial? That's what I'm referencing there.

Ah, I just thought more along the lines of using them too much and then dying... and now I remember that that was actually was the case... Sometimes my nerdiness fails me.

Yeah, one of the things I learned in the writer's workshop I took was, and this ties into Dopants being hurt by bullets like old Shown era Kaijin was that somehow clues had to be left behind so why not a Dopant cutting himself to leave behind a blood trace?

Makes sense

but since Philip and Daring and the rest of the police force are mere mortals faced with an army of monsters I had to water them down somehow.

Fair enough.

9120107

Ah, I just thought more along the lines of using them too much and then dying... and now I remember that that was actually was the case... Sometimes my nerdiness fails me.

Wasn't the only reference out of 13 you failed to count up. The Injury Memory, it exists and was shown if not named in the very first arc of Kamen Rider Double in the hideout.

9120111
Oh wow, that is even for me too extreme. Wow, I'm just glad I counted 11of them. Seriously, a memory that was only on a computer screen? That is evil.

9120095 Hmm, both legitimate reasons really, I'd say probably Grape.

One thing I kinda found funny. When they were talking about his photos and then when we saw how he looked I was thinking of another photographer who likes pink and has brown hair. Granted that could be because I just finished his series today, so that might play a roll in this.

9120150
"Damn you Decade!" It's seriously always his fault. Who knows, maybe he's the killer!:derpytongue2:

9120203
Nah, then it would just be Narutaki

This seems interesting, but the whole noir setting is just not doing it for me and is making it more of a turn off for me personally. Still everything looks good, no major mistakes anywhere so I wish you all the luck on this story.

9120203

Don't you know? ZI-O is the new Decade, and we're gunna see more of him soon!! Still, interesting take on the Kamen Rider Double story here. Daring Do as part of the 2 in 1 detective...and with Fang and nasca as the memories in question? I like it!!

9121002

Daring Do as part of the 2 in 1 detective...and with Fang and nasca as the memories in question? I like it!!

Hate to disappoint, but remember the way the Drivers were described. They were described as the Lost Drivers, aka the ones that Skull, Joker, and Eternal used. Still, the basic premise is the same, the one that lines up with the lyrics to the theme.

Upon meeting the ultimate partner
A miracle will be created (So We can make it)

Basically, while there will not be a two in one Detective, as I've opted to take the Kamen Rider Unicorn route here, it'll still match up with Daring and Philip being partners working in sync together. Think of it as like Takeshi Hongo and Hayato Ichimonji in a way.

9121840
Whoops, I though it was one double driver and one lost driver so that the other guy with them could act like Accel...but that's another good point with having Hidari's mentor Skull and his partner. Good work all the same, and I LOVE Kamen Rider Unicorn, so I can't fault you there!

every other day a new report about one of Cherry’s former lovers being frozen solid and then shattered came in.

Ok, I'm tempted to count this up, but already did that in the first one and I don't count things double. :trollestia:

pressing a button on her wristwatch making it turn into a small spider that silently grappled up to the skylight and pulled her upwards with a small zipping sound.

Now, count up your references: 1

she might be able to score a date with that young Flash Sentry patrol officer she’d been eying.

Sorry, I only count up Kamen Rider references, but cute.

It was in his nature, after all, as soon as he got a case he would follow it to the end and chase down every lead.

I have the feeling that is a nodded to another Philip, but not sure. Ah, screw it: Now, count up your references: 2

They were two of a kind, partners from back to front

Bow-Chicka-Bow-Wow

Drawing on her deeply hidden love for Japanese television dramas, and her even deeper hidden love for superheroes, she called out a singular, yet simple phrase as she slammed the Gaia Memory into its slot on her belt.

“Henshin!”

Now, count up your references: 3

Now… Count up your Crimes!

Now, count up your references: 4

Because she’s a Masked Rider, that’s what she is.

Huh, ok translated. Fine with me. And no, I don't count this as a reference because I don't want to give this piece of crap any validation in any way shape or form.

\ Heat! /

Now, count up your references: 5

so I’ll just call it Fang Streiser

Now, count up your references: 6

Phase one complete.

\ Cobra! Cobra! Evol Cobra! /

"Phase one complete! Huhauhahaha!"

Are you willing to ride with the Devil?

I think she already did :raritywink: Oh and don't we forget: Now, count up your references: 7

with a pure white coat

X-tremly interesting

Maria S. Cranberry?

Now, count up your references: 8

By the way, love how you used that plot point from the movie

I sorta have this rule when using my own ponysona. Make them the butt monkey in whatever story they get put in.

Lol, well that is interesting. Closet masochist it seems.

And yes. I know, the Masked Rider thing.

Ah, who cares. Makes sense. I personally prefer Kamen Rider, but hey, really not important.

Only reason I used Henshin is because it has a better ring to it than it's English translation in transform.

Fair enough. Could have also gone with something completely original when you already change the name. something like: "Let's ride!" but this works too.

9122098
You forgot a reference:

Helped me solve the cases of the Constellation Killer and the Hillside Strangler.

Constellation Killer = Zodiac Killer

9122142
Like I said, I only count up Kamen Rider references.

Funny thing is if he had actually called him the Zodiac Killer I might have counted that one up.

9122098

with a pure white coat

X-tremly interesting

I swear that one was completely unintentional. I was just thinking of Blueblood's fur coat color, not Jun's attire.

Maria S. Cranberry?

Now, count up your references: 8

By the way, love how you used that plot point from the movie

Yeah, I liked how they completely fooled us for a time into thinking Maria was Philip's mother, aka Shroud before pulling the wool out from under us. I honestly liked both Maria and Shroud's storylines in Double, so I thought why not sorta make them one and in the same in a sense in this story?

I sorta have this rule when using my own ponysona. Make them the butt monkey in whatever story they get put in.

Lol, well that is interesting. Closet masochist it seems.

Nah, as I said to Ponyjosiah and I requote: I have this rule, okay? Whenever I use my ponysona, make him the butt monkey of everything. So far in my stories I've put him through psychological hell, had him get killed via a fist through the chest and now he gets to be a serial killer.
Way I see it, if you're going to put your Ponysona in a story, make them hurt, or make them so dislikeable.
Fair, right?

And there's one reference you forgot to count up. Remember the underlined lines of dialogue when Daring slapped on her Lost Driver? Well, they linked to this.

(Okay, actually a Soundcloud version of the song, but still the same recording.)

9122142

9122150
Completely unintentional I swear, I'd completely forgotten about the Zodiac Killer at the time of writing. I just thought Constellation Killer was a good name, and would make sense for a guy who works in astronomy to help Philip out with.

9122173

I swear that one was completely unintentional.

I think that is a sign that you are watching too much Kamen Rider. Ah, who am I kidding, there is no thing such as too much Kamen Rider.

9122173

And there's one reference you forgot to count up. Remember the underlined lines of dialogue when Daring slapped on her Lost Driver? Well, they linked to this.

Well, I wouldn't really count that as a reference, more a song that is in the story. Or I'm missing the part where you used lyrics from the song in the story.

Philip’s apartment was fairly modest, just like him. A piano laid in one corner of the room, which Philip played and practiced in his rare moments of off time. The far side of the living room, wall to wall bookshelves packed with every sort of thing imaginable. Books littered with information like the extinct species of ancestral arthropods known as the Anomalocaris to just simple things like how to play the saxophone or even various hard-case crime novels. There was even a ancient pony’s skull, or at least a replica of the Piltdown Pony’s forged one sitting in there amongst various taxidermied bugs resting in jars of fluid. Outside a heavily blinded window that let almost no sunshine through was both a rain gauge and an anemometer.

This sounds like Sherlock Holmes to a T. The weird books, the musical instruments (Noting that Holmes played violin). And Daring Do playing Dr. Watson. like the thought.

9122453
Yeah, one of Ponyjosiah's biggest influences for creating Phil was Sherlock if I remember correctly.

9121002
There's actually another reason why FangNazca isn't a thing here. Remember how Philip (The Double one, not the Aussie) went beserk first time he used the memory? Can you imagine what would happen if the Fang Memory was combined with a memory like Nazca or Trigger in this story? Philip and Daring would become just as powerful and dangerous as the monsters they fight.

\ Old! /

Now count up your references: 1

going on to score hits throughout the decade

As long as she didn't travel through the Decade :raritywink:

Good riddance to bad rubbish really, Daring thought even as she struck the Old Dopant across the chest, her music was always crap. People just finally woke up and smelled the roses.

Wow, rude.

\ Trial! Maximum Drive! /

Now count up your references: 2

Now, count up the moments till your crimes are judged!

Huh, an interesting variant of the line, but it will not be counted up.

as a glowing blue T of hard light projected itself over her body.

Now count up your references: 3

What looked like an eldritch abomination made entirely of gold stood before them. Long, thin tentacles stood before them, almost like a set of golden scarves. The head and its’ collar spikes were black as night, with a few gold waves on the face to make it stand out. A yellow moon sat below its’ neck and hung daintily on his centre tendril. It didn’t utter a word, and instead let out a series of distorted moans and groans instead.

\Luna!/ Oh and of course: Now count up your references: 4

Again with the vanishing act.

That reminds me of continuing that one...

Evil without purpose or reason

There is no such thing as evil without purpose or reason. We might not understand their reasons, but they are there.

He had taken notice that unlike the usual rib cage styled Gaia Memories, Grape’s resembled a flash drive before it had shattered. A T2 version of the Ice Age memory.

Generally, T2 Memories don't shatter, but different T2 Memories, so not a problem.

I swear, if someone tries to pick me up for a night in, they’re getting tossed into the wall.

I think you will fit right in...

Ok, I think this is from Kiva, but I really don't know. Never seen that series.

Newsflash Daring, the real world is not about happy endings. It's about taking the life you have and fighting like hell to keep it,

Yeah, I have to disagree. That mindset will get you nowhere. Take pride and happiness in the small happy endings. And the only way to receive a happy ending is to move forward towards the future because the only one who can make a happy ending a reality is you yourself! Don't let your past define you, take it and use it as a pathway towards a brighter future. Learn from it... God, does this sound preachy :rainbowlaugh: Ah, who cares, this is a Kamen Rider story. I think I can allow myself some chessynes.

9159130

As long as she didn't travel through the Decade :raritywink:

Oh, you should be ashamed of that one. That's just bad... Not up to your usual material.

Wow, rude.

Yeah, the Noireverse Daring is, if you may notice, not exactly the most tactful of ponies at times. And considering White Lightning is meant to be one huge snarky joke relating towards certain pop singers Coughs out Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber I think it's a well-earned remark.

\Luna!/ Oh and of course: Now count up your references: 4

Never understood why a memory that creates Illusions, bends bullets and whole lotta other crazy crap got labeled as Luna. Is there something to do with the Moon and people's thoughts about it throughout history that I'm missing here? Also, you failed to count up the reference with the soldiers the Luna Dopant made, namely the Masquerade Dopants AKA Museum's footsoldiers.

Ok, I think this is from Kiva, but I really don't know. Never seen that series.

Yeah, it's from Kiva, called Destiny's Play. Sung by Wateru/Kiva's actor, and serves as the theme for his base form. And just like Finger on the Trigger in Double, it was even sung in-universe once. (For the record, thought of using Nobody's Perfect to fit the grim and gritty Noire atmosphere, but too obvious of a gag.)

9159204

Oh, you should be ashamed of that one. That's just bad... Not up to your usual material.

Oh, come on. How could I not use that? This was gift-wrapped for me.

Yeah, the Noireverse Daring is, if you may notice, not exactly the most tactful of ponies at times.

Understatement. She really is not the most pleasant of persons to be around.

Never understood why a memory that creates Illusions got labeled as Luna.

I can actually explain that one. Yes, the fact that the moon is something mysterious through the ages shaped the memories of the earth perception on it. The fact that people in the western hemisphere claimed that there was a face on the moon for ages and the countless legends only add to that. And since the powers of Gaia Memories are based on everything connected to the word makes legends be reflected in their powers. Oh and to add to that I'll just quote a reviewer: "Power based on illusions. Like the shadow of a moon." That being one of the parallels to Black and Shadow Moon.

Yeah, it's from Kiva, called Destiny's Play.

And now I remember where I know that one. I recently just looked through Kamen Rider Insertsongs to see what they were about and stumbled unto this. On the side, I was looking for a song that had something to do with breaking fate. Oh and not to forget: Now count up your references: 5 or 6 if you count the soldiers thing as one 🤷

9159233

Oh, come on. How could I not use that? This was gift-wrapped for me.

And that's the exact reason you shouldn't have used it.

Oh, you want something more original, more creative? Fine, you'll get it 😈

Would one need to read Ponyville Noire, Volume One for this?

9179248
Not really, given it's sorta it's own alternate universe.

Remember the Kiva-La incident?

Now, count up your references: 2

And now I have the image of Kivala draining people of their blood in my head... that is so adorable

MPL

Almost, almost.

one Sharp Blade

He killed his victims by pushing a playing card through their stomach, truly gruesome.

Sharp had used these hidden rooms and tunnels to construct a murder castle if you will. The entire end result was quite disturbing, to say the least.

Know what this is referring to. Truly devious shit some people can come up with.

“I’m on fire today!”

You could say his magma is surging! I'm not apologizing!

Saffron Masala, that was her name. Wife of Blueblood

Well, that is an interesting couple if I ever saw one :twilightoops:

Hopping onto the bike, the mare let out a loud: “Hey, give that back, ya bastard!” as Philip revved the engine before he tossed her a sack of coins.

And on the next day, this article could be read everyone: "The mask of deception falls! Local detective and Masked Rider arrested for the theft of a motorbike! The police have decided to confiscate the source of their powers and hand it out trustworthy police officers. What the citicens think about the betrayl of their local heros can be read on page two."

But no, Philip was quite pissed off by now, being used like a pawn on a game board.

And the solution to this is apparently to smash your head against the board till it breaks. :facehoof:

But a few of these boys, they’d love nothing better than to see Phil arrested for the crap he just pulled. I can’t guarantee anything.

Can't blame them. This was next level stupid

"So, that was that chapter the only thing left to do is to say that this was- Hey! What was that?"

"Oh, this guy is great! He could be my royal spymaster! Wait a moment, I have to talk with him!"

"Oh no, you don't! You are not stealing another Riders power! Now get lost you, idiot!"

"Uh, bummer! Oh, well, see you when I'm king!"

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Now, where was I. Oh yeah, liked the chapter."

No kidding, I only know about this thanks to the man being a villain of the week on Supernatural. Rather wish I didn't now, actually.

I've done weirder. Gestures to Wild Access

But no, Philip was quite pissed off by now, being used like a pawn on a game board.

Points to AN:
--He sometimes struggles to control his anger, and when he gets really angry, somepony's going to the hospital
--He lacks a certain cunning that Daring has. He's a blunt-force person: if he's hit with an obstacle, he'll try to ram his way through it rather than think about ways around or over it

Nah, as I said, you won't get rid of me that easily. Just was busy playing through the most recent patch of my MMO of choice :twilightsheepish:

Yeah... About that...

Usually Manehattenites, the social butterflies who come to this part of the world are quite snobby really. On behalf of my city, I apologize for their behavior.

Thank god Blueblood is not a snob... oh wait :rainbowlaugh:

He also wondered, where had these strange stallions in white coats come from?

well, that is X-tremly suspicious, wonder what their deal is

May have, may not. But seriously, Foundation X? Gets so little love, compared to the cockroaches of the Kamen Rider Universe, Shocker and it's many incarnations. Dangerous as Shocker is, it's kinda gotten overused by this point as a big bad organization for Kamen Riders. I mean, come on, let other evil groups have more time in the limelight eh?

Okay, this one you might have to explain to me. If this was a reference to anything Kamen Rider, it was quite unintentional. I just liked the line.

Yeah, couldn't agree more. And hey, you actually call them cockroaches as well, nice. #Really, I'm still mad that they didn't use them for Zi-O as the big bad since you know a good way to get old monsters back and just bullshit a little bit.

Rolls eyes On another note, commissioned RamenDriver (You might know him, think he did your Rider's art and he's doing a piece for Ruin of Justice) for a piece of Kamen Rider Nazca. Can't wait to see that, as does PonyJosiah interestingly enough. That took me by surprise, as he's not a Toku fan. ...Hell, I was surprised he let me do this to begin with.

Here is his original Kamen Rider Nazca, that was how I found him after reading Unicorn I thought, why not look for a Kamen Rider Nazca and I found his

Why'd you inexplicably give Grape Vine an accent when he next appeared?

...That was sorta an error on my part. I'm generally used to him speaking with that accent when I write him, and I'd honestly forgotten that in his first two appearances he didn't have the accent.

You know full well that Kamen Riders can’t be defeated. And I am now a Kamen Rider. So this battle might as well be ceaseless.

Sure, whatever you say, thank god there weren't a shit ton of Kamen Riders that were defea... Oh, wait.

Didn’t think you’d climax out on us so soon!

"Now count up your references: 1!" Ok, I don't have watched Den-O until now, but I think something similar was Momotaros catchphrase.

\ Eternal! /

"Now count up your references: 2!"

“Halt! This is Officer Tempest with the Manehatten Task Force!” a male middle-aged voice shouted over a megaphone. “Drop your weapon, and disengage your Driver or we will be forced to fire!” Tempest shouted, and a door on the chopper opened to reveal a SWAT officer holding an assault rifle.

Oh yeah, sure that will help them. I think letting Daring and Philip handle this would be the better solution.

"Now count up your references: 3!"

My wife is a goddess amongst mares, and she would never unleash Dopants onto the world!

Loves sometimes makes good people blind, it's a shame

\ Violence! /

"Now count up your references: 4!" But wouldn't this fit the "Arms" memory better?

Swear, we don’t poison ponies. At least, not on purpose. Mind you, there was this one time some serial killer put mitoxantrone and cyclophosphamide into the water of someone we were interrogating, but that was a one-off, we swear. Honest to God.

Yeah, tell that the suspect, brilliant idea :facehoof:

I’m more scared of dying by an airborne pathogen probably released by the Virus Gaia Memory my commander was planning on testing anyways than Madam Neon Usland herself anyways!

"Now count up your references: 5!" And nice, "Virus", love that memorie

“Don't ask me questions!”

"Now count up your references: 6!"

“Philip and Daring, they had it right from the very beginning. It was just for the money. After the accident, I saw what Gaia Memories could really do if we’d just pushed ourselves that little bit harder. You never had the courage. I did.”

What a... lovely woman.

"Now count up your references: 7!"

\ Jewel! /

"Now count up your references: 8!"

Just like a real diamond, it had a shatterpoint, and it seems Tempest knew exactly where to shoot.

Oh and of course: "Now count up your references: 9!"

Oh and here a little thing I made for fun:

Armor Time!

"Nazca!

Nazca!

Time for the Finisher!

Maximum Time Break!

And last, but by far not least:

"Hādoboirudo! Manehattan o mamotte iru raidā wa... Nazca!" (Hard Boiled! The Rider who protects Manehattan is... Nazca!)
