"Show my head to the people, it is worth seeing." - Georges Danton

T

Centuries ago an apocalypse ravaged Equestria, scorching the lands, boiling the seas, and burning away the air. In that fateful moment, the embers of life were snuffed and the planet left a husk.

However, I survived, immune to the desolate environment I was unfortunate enough to inhabit. With nothing left to do, I began to walk, scouring what remains of Equestria in search of anything to give my life meaning.

It was only a matter of time before I returned to Ponyville.

So much thanks to my fantastic editors, Matthewl419 and Tempus.

The original concept for this fic received an honourable mention at 2018's Iron Author Contest at Everfree Northwest. You can find the original unedited copy here.

Featured in Seattle's Angels Round 156, which is pretty freaking rad!

"This story’s writing is something I find truly to be beautiful at times. Both in its descriptives and in its internal struggle it paints for Twilight." - A+ Review, Vertigo22 (09/05/2019)

"Gara’s devoted this story’s space to exploring that wide open introspective feeling, and I adore what she’s done with that." - Cynewulf

Where can I find all the entries?

I don't think there is a public database, yet. Maybe when EFNW creates a post they might have it? I'm not sure.

This planet looks quite similar to Mars. Dry riverbeds, almost no atmosphere...
Although Mars was never really baked, but the unfiltered UV radiation of the Sun helped the erosion somewhat.

The cover art is actually a picture of mars. I had more of a mercury in mind though when thinking about this fic.

I'm not sure I understand the ending. Help?

Twilight returned to Ponyville. She remembers her friends, gets shipped with Rarity, then removed the spell she once cast that protected a brooch Rarity used to own, and left.

So correct me if I'm wrong, we got unneeded Twiairty shipping, she left a broach, removed the wards that kept it fabulous for so long.

And continued her trek across a dead Equus? All I got.

Whatever it's called, it still didn't feel like it belonged. But have an upvote anyway because I do like the story.

I have reviewed this here.

Thank you so much for the review, I really appreciate it, I'm super thrilled to hear that you loved it.

Barren wastes and pointless gestures are always good fun.
I think it could have stood to be more minimal, less thinking-words and more description of the setting, blur the boundaries between the wastes inside and the wastes without, but whatever. It is good.

Devastating in every sense. The way each location triggers memories abandoned for centuries, peeling back the scabs on wounds thst never closed... Brilliant work in capturing the emotions as they come rising to the crusty, weary surface of Twilight's mind and heart. And an excellent head fake with the castle. Sad as this was, I'm glad I finally read it.

The pain of immortality...

Shit, I could feel this fic, the desolation, the loneliness...
