You really need a native English speaker to go over your writing. I mean, no offense, your English is way better than my skill at any other language, but as it is your prose is very awkward. Fun story, though.

Do you think there is any way I can improve this work in particular and my writing in general on my own? I quite frankly want to stay self-sufficient when it comes to writing. I am still learning to write good fics indeed, but my goal is to master my prose by all means.

Eh, y'see, English is just a bastard (literally, even; it's an unholy union of Anglo-Saxon, Old Norse, and Norman French mashed together in the most perverse ways possible.). It's big and convoluted and a lot of the time it's just plain stupid. We're really sorry that the Brits and us Americans establishing hegemony over most of the world one after another turned our beautiful, terrible language into the Lingua Franca. It was an accident, we swear.
This all makes it really tough for a non-native speaker to sound 'right' without serious immersion. Hell, I have a buddy at work, smart guy, who's been here for thirty years and I still have to edit his emails for him. But that's okay. Just remember that every good author has a great editor behind them. And this site has a few groups devoted to helping authors find editing help. I'd offer myself, but I'm a completely unreliable flake and you haven't done anything I'm aware of to deserve that level of frustration. Take care and keep writing.
