Perhaps the mirror is being moved from place to place to hide it from someone. How often have you read or watched a story where the searchers go to a place and finally find the object that they are looking for, and… It’s not there.
As for the Cutie Mark Crusaders... well, even though they end up going to the wrong place and getting into trouble, if Apple jacks tells them to stay out of that part of the barn... they might listen.
The difference between non-fiction and fiction is non-fiction has to make sense.
