sniggles

I make really stupid stories, but it's fine since I enjoy making them.

T

After having a dream of flying through space and time whilst a disembodied voice describes the phenomena that is observed, Twilight is convinced that everything she was taught as a filly in Canterlot is not true. For her love of science and the advancement of science in the future, she has to broadcast her views on the truth that is space through the first ever TV program in Equestria, no matter what the cost is.

The cover photo is a screenshot of a scene in Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey where after Neil DeGrasse Tyson puts on his sunglasses and gets exposed to the glory of the Big Bang that resulted in the creation of the Universe.

... what did I just read?

4575398 you have life underneath that frozen crust of yours, I just know it!

4575461 Quite. My organics are quite precious to me.

... you organics try and do anything to them, I'll turn all your atoms into Argon.

4575512
Good thing I'm Hydrogen then, Comere! *Grabs and drags into dark corner of universe to perform science!*

4575600 What tree is made of stardust? All of them.

4575622 "we are all made of starstuff." -Carl Sagan

4575663 Indeed we are. Why? Because I can prove that we are extremely fucking lucky. Wanna know how? The four main cosmic forces: gravity, magnetism, and the weak/strong nuclear forces. Forgive me and call me out if this does, in fact, not prove that we are immensely lucky, but at least hear me out first. The four main forces. How do they work? We know that mass+gravity=weight, but how, on a fundamental level, does gravity really work? (Again, this can be chalked up to me being young and ignorant, but I'm trying to spark up an intelligent conversation here.) We know that the density of a material has an effect on it's gravitational pull, but how does that pull really work? What causes it? If the law of gravity were to suddenly be universally canceled, nearly everything, in theory, would fly apart due to the lack of anything holding them together. I say nearly because this assumes that the other three forces were still in effect. If all of them were to be abruptly canceled on a universal scale, as far as I can tell, everything would just go 'poof!' Gone. Nothing left. Thoughts?

If the races of equestria have a curiosity anything like ours I can see the complete rewrite of certain facts in their history... and the downfall of a being that has been driven mad with power. Just like ancient times in humanity, ehh?

4575734 Erm, weight technically is equal to the product of mass and gravitational field strength, not the addition. Plus, I'm pretty sure magnetism isn't one of the cosmic forces but rather electromagnetism. A clear distinction between the two has to be made. And nobody really knows how gravity really works, though there are theories that there is a corresponding graviton, or a particle, associated with gravity that 'carries' this force, in what way or form i do not know since I don't know too much in the field of particle physics. But what I do know is that objects with mass create dents, if you will, in space that other objects of smaller mass can roll around in, or orbit in, if you can get the analogy. I read about it somewhere but I forgot all of the complex terminologies; however, the idea is there.

As for your argument that we are lucky because the four forces are there, I'm not too sure whether such a claim would really be valid. I mean, we don't know whether it is possible that one of them can just disappear just like that, and the chances of that happening is highly remote in the long age of the universe where these cosmic forces have left their mark on today, indicating that they've been here since time started. So, largely improbable that any of the forces would cancel suddenly, so I don't see the point in arguing that we're lucky because four ongoing forces persist when, in the first place, it's unlikely that they'd stop. However, when we're talking about being lucky because these forces have existed since the dawn of time, I suppose its valid. I mean, without any of them the chance for matter to exist is essentially zero. So, weighing up those chances, I suppose the presence of a number in chance versus zero is relatively high and thus we are quite lucky if seen in that light.

4575753 yes, basically the storyline that is related with the so-called 'martyrdom' of Giordano Bruno in the year 1600 which was documented in Neil Degrasse Tyson's 'Cosmos'.

4575837 I thought the story plot fit nicely and you did a good execution, not many writers can get the feel of this down as well as you did, I also like how you did an 'ancient aliens' thing to give Luna the correct hints as to how things work and built it until she felt she had to share this huge discovery with at least one other pony. With all things considered this was a good read even if it was just a one shot and I give you extra points for the historic references you based this off of, gotta respect that in my opinion!

I do wonder if that space device Luna found was one of ours and what the alien race that made it would do when they discovered that they basically lead a scientific revolution on an alien planet without even meeting them? Might make a possible sceneario for a sequel in the future if you do decide on one since its obvious whatever sent the device was trying to inform other alien civilizations of their race as a sort of 'reaching out' thing... maybe it was a probe that contained info on the aliens discoveries?
Sorry for over thinking things and typing all of this, I tend to do that every now and then due to over analysing things :twilightsheepish:

4575906 Who doesn't love a little Luna?

4575966 I'm glad that you think of my story in such a way but unfortunately not many people are interested in Science anymore. And I wanted to convey to the reader that this Alien Race was the human race, hence the comparisons to 24 hour days and 365 day years. The probe that Luna found is based off of the Voyager Golden Record which is present on the Voyager spacecrafts which holds a little piece of Earth on them so that Aliens billions of years from now will find this record and know about our home planet. Instead of Earth's music, however, this probe contains the episodes of Cosmos.

4575753
Indeed, almost like the bad old times.

This...
I want more of it...

And that's how either Carl Sagan or Neil deGrasse-Tyson destroyed Equestria.

In any case, the premise was good, but the execution left a bad taste in my mouth. Frankly, this was one of the most ham-handed Tyrantlestia stories I've read. "Out of character" is putting it mildly; once she got going, she was virtually unrecognizable.

Also, you seriously paraphrased the statement that made "euphoric" a four-letter word on the Internet. Wow.

So, yeah, an enjoyable story, but a decidedly flawed one.

4591449 thanks for the honest criticism. I do agree that I was a bit too rushed when I made Celestia go all tyrant that I drew her out of character but it's too late for changes now, I guess. I already had a character in mind when I illustrated her in the way I did. And I don't think that the 'euphoric' statement is all too bad... fact is, it's the best way to piss tyrants off.
