I'm a long time science fiction and animation fan who stumbled into My Little Pony fandom and got caught -- I guess I'm a Brony Forever now.

T

Half a century before the events of MLP: Tales, the Pony civilization is on the brink of global war. Can a new force of nature save the peace? Will it let Ponykind leap the hurdles of gravity to win the stars? And what might that weapon unleash upon an unprepared world?

Chapters (4)

I like the chapter here, and I have questions about a pair of references:

Finemare chuckled. “Bet ten bits we don’t burn the atmosphere …”

If I remember right, this was a sincere concern of the Project, wasn't it? That they might set off a chain reaction that would incinerate the planet?

The Leader of Lippanzer was not a sane pony. He declared that he would not be stopped by any threat. “I am no coward,” he declared. “No compassion cow. There will be no surrender!”

What the heck is a 'compassion cow'?

Hmm, why do I think I know just who is sitting inside of Dr. Fuchs' head?

And I like this reference: you should see a Krell, or even a Velantian.

I know the Krell from Forbidden Planet, and I think the Velantians are one of the races from Doc Smith's Lensman series? Hmm... I bet that Discord and his relations would just love Boskone and the Eddorians from that series.

The scientists in the real Manhattan Project were worried that the fission chain reaction might spread beyond the plutonium core, igniting either the atmosphere or the Earth itself. It seemed a very improbable outcome to them, based on known nuclear physics -- but then much less was truly known about nuclear physics at the time than is the case now.

Dr. Finemare was semi-joking. But I'm sure it passed through her mind that, if they were about to destroy the world or at least southwestern Amareica, she wouldn't be alive long enough for anyone to hold her sense of humor against her, while if they weren't, then everyone would simply remember the joke as an example of her wry wit.

Adolph Hitler, the obvious inspiration for the "Leader of Lippanzer," believed that compassion was a sign of femininity and hence weakness. He mocked those who had moral qualms as "compassion cows."

Ironically, Hitler himself not only had a strong feminine side, but when he was younger was quite capable of compassion. He viewed his hardening in World War One and subsquent ruthlessness as leader first of the Nazi Party and then of the Third Reicn as constituting the successful purging of his soul of its weaknesses. He invented and was almost consumed by the character of "The Leader" (Der Fuhrer) he had created in his quest to bring Germany world dominon.

One of the last things he did in his life -- marrying his long-time mistress Eva Braun -- was clearly done out of compassion, because she had always wanted their union to be made respectable. In other words, at the last, he wavered from his self-invented purely-masculine role as the "Leader," and did something out of ordinary human love.

Obviously, in the MLP universe, "compassion cows" might also be real animals. Possibly sapient ones, though I don't know if G2 cattle had any more intelligence than do those from our world.

Yep, it's him. A much-weakened avatar of himself, disembodied and far below the power levels his later avatar possesses, but it's Mister Fun himself. There are some psychological hazards to the method he's chosen to act in that world, which he's about to discover. But then, he was always overconfident.

This reads like a Jim Ottaviani / Jonathan Fetter-Vorm collab, with the appropriately meandering prolixity (and exact replication of scientific jargon). The whole of the work, should one venture to be precise, could be most prodigiously described as verbose; though the chronological targets of the verbosity were chosen in a manner worthy of the loftiest of accolades, and I can only commend their election. :twilightoops:

*Side note: I'm surprised a pony doppelganger of Leo Szilard was not incorporated. He waxed on the project's political ramifications long before any of the other scientists cognized the intricacies of their unique situation. It was the birth of "big science", after all.

3578106

Hee hee hee ... now that was worthy of William Harper "Johnny" Littlejohn (Doc Savage series). I always loved his dialogue, because he would look for the biggest possible words with which to describe anything. I think the others on Doc's crew treated talking to him as a game -- they were all basically geniuses and usually understood what he was saying.

I don't know if I wrote any of the characters that verbose, except for maybe D -- and he's a super-intelligent immortal chaos demon from beyond space and time, plus in any form he likes to mess with your head. Of course I got all "Doc" Smithian describing the atomic explosion -- but then if you're going to have an atom bomb in one's story (and really, how often do you get to do that in a MLP fanfic), I think one should milk it for all the drama it's worth!

Jordan, thanks for those responses. They really did a great job of answering my questions.

1) This is a very neat chapter
2) Why does Fuchs call Finemare a 'him'?

3911513

He does call Finemare a "him"? Whoops! I have to fix that, then.

“We have a line going,” he said bluntly. We can mass-produce them.

*missing quotation mark

Well, of the possible side-effects of being exposed to the explosion of an atomic bomb in utero, becoming the incarnations of what will be Celestia and Luna isn't all that bad.

4017016

I am glad to see someone reading this -- it's my earliest attempt at a long MLP fanfic, and I may come back to it someday. I think I turned people off with the My Little Pony Tales based world premise.

The device can’t possibly go critical without the halves in actual contact. Always it is the stupid military who must run everything, both in Eveland and here in Amareica …

*Shouldn't this be in italics?

well-organized, for as long as I need to be you.

*italics problem

... as far as I know, capitalism is not generally considered a religion, nor does it present an explanation for the origins of the universe. Discord, start making sense.

Also, yes Fuchs. Your little native arts and crafts project just helped bring about the end of your world.
Shouldn't have used so much macaroni and glitter!

4017097

Discord is totally mocking Fuchs. He needs to get his jollies as best he can, since in this form he has very little power save the ability to possess others. The hole he came through was a very tight squeeze. The mockery, though, is that he considers all the Pony political, religious and social systems equally silly, including both Communist scientific socialism" and Meganist liberal democracy.

He is making a threat. He means to bring down the Age of Wonders. Which will take some doing, since he can only work through others. So he needs to find some more influential others. Whom he can reliably hope to control. Which makes his task difficult.

4017035
If that turned them off, they must not have actually read the story. Which I suppose they might not have; deciding whether or not to read is the description's job, after all, and that's the only place someone unfamiliar with MLP Tales could hope to . But still, if you could get them past that, I don't think there would be any problems on that score.

Perhaps you could just refer to the time period as "the Age of Wonders?"

4017114
Discord under stress; now that should be entertaining.

4017139

I may eventually. This is a very early fanfic of mine, and I hadn't yet standardized my terms. I still want to do more of Trinity, folding "Sun Atoms" in as part of Chapter 3, maybe alternating Finemare and Discord chapters, introduce Dusk, do his friendship and romance story, send him off to war, introduce Dashie, fold in "Bridges at To-Ki-Rin" in there, do the following chapter about Dashie's recovery ("Suicide Is Painless") and then get into the space program, the Moonshot, and the covert war between Vipra and the Joe Team, etc. etc. (imagine Serpentor if he were actually Discord's new form and running the whole war for laughs), death of Dusk, Moondreamer's breakdown, Sundreamer starts playing with inventing toy cosmologies, then the sisters get onto the project with Starlight to create Paradise, the Cataclysm, and at the moment of transcendence Sundreamer and Moondreamer influence their Cosmic Selves just long enough to save the world from total annihilation by shunting most of the energy into the conversion to their toy Ptolemaric Solar System cosmology It's only gotta last for a few millennia -- what could possibly go wrong?

That'll be pretty long, I guess. A project. And I don't know if I want to put that much effort into it when most people don't really like it.

4017139

Hmm. I may delete the preceding post after I wake up. I'm giving away the whole plot, though I don't think anyone but you is reading this.

4017175
Well, it hasn't been updated for several months. If readers aren't actively searching for it, they're not likely to find it. And it also doesn't have any character tags, which, personally, is one of the main ways I search for things I have no idea about.

The negative response, as far as I can tell, was a knee-jerk reaction by two people, which is a minority of voters. Also, less than the five favorites. Also, just two people.
If you don't feel like continuing this, that's fine, but you're not going to ruin anyone's day if you choose to write more of it.

Ha ha, spoilers! I love spoilers! They're mine now, my delicious spoilers, and no one can take them away from me! Ha ha!

4017213

Oh, very good point. Maybe I'll get back on it again at some point, then.

uh, is this any way related to the Shadow wars? or just the timeline?

I do hope you continue this one day. It's got atomic science, fan fiction backstory, and eldritch horror! What more could I ask for?

(Plus, I have to appreciate the parallel between D and Fuchs and the Shadows and Luna, even if the chaos spirit would probably be horribly offended by the comparison.)

Why'd you stop writing this story? Also, does this have anything to do with the Pony POV Series?

5397658

This was originally meant to be an extension of the Pony POVerse, but swiftly diverged with Nightmares Are Tragic and its very different explanation of at least one sort of Nightmare state. I probably should come back to it someday. Also, both "Sun Atoms" and "The Bridges of To-ki-rin" were originally meant to be folded into this story, and may someday be.

I could almost see Pinkie and Paradise looking back when I read that bit about worldlines. Oh, Sweetie, if only you knew...

Really, "if only you knew" could be applied to everyone in this chapter except for D. And maybe even him, in reference to certain events. :yay:

Great stuff. Historical fiction is a rare genre to see on this site; I always enjoy seeing it. Looking forward to more.

But it was well within the intellectual powers of two Cosmic Principles.

Oh... elegant!

It's definetely a good starting chapter, although the names of the ponies don't sit entirely right with me even though I know they are the ponified real names of the Manhattan Project scientists. Maybe the two part names that are in the majority of current Equestria's naming traditions weren't common in that age?
Might amuse myself by trying to come up with those for this

Anyway, off to the next one.

Das gutt, thought Schwarzwalder Fuchs

Das ist gut, thought Schwarzwaelder Fuchs. Though a German would likely use the phrase 'Sehr gut' in this situation.

Should you ever need a German native speaker, I'm your man. Sorry for nitpicking.
Also, nice use of the name of a south German breed of workhorse, quite fitting.
Oh, and hello Discord! That's how you made your entrance... seems the two sisters always bring him with them wherever they go.
Good you just updated this story, it's getting interesting.

Alright, you've won me over. This is getting interesting.
Thanks for the informative author's note by the way..
Looking forward to more.

Shut up, Discord. Leave Celestia and Luna alone.

Before i start reading this, how does this involve spike and rarity if its before they were even thought of

6112353

Gaah! I must have accidentally posted this to a Spike or Rarity folder! I'm going to find where and get it out! Very sorry! :twilightsheepish:

6112866

Is it still in there? I'm thinking I may have pulled it right away. See, recently I published "Audience Reaction," which is a Spike and Rarity story, and put it on a lot of sites. And what happens sometimes is that Trinity, the first story I ever published on Fimfiction, is the first one under the cursor and if I make a mistake, Trinity gets put on the site instead.

Mind you, I like Trinity, but it's most definitely not a romantic comedy about Spike and Rarity!

6113533 lol yea, even though it would be interesting to have them travel back in time to before lunas banishment

Wow it's good so far i can't wait for the next chapter!

came back and reread this again really wish you would continue work on it it's to good to just fade.

Oh, D. Denial is so unbecoming.

Do you think I'm happy about all this? he said, indicating with a sweet of their hand the bathtub and its contents.

I see Discord has been playing fast and lose with his host's anatomy. How rude. :raritywink:

Ah. Discord's motivations become clear. He just wants his totally-not-a-girlfriend to stop wasting her time with this particular planet full of meatbags, and the most entertaining method is to remove the option with extreme prejudice. Of course, he greatly underestimates ponykind's resilience and entertainment value. He'll learn.

And then there's that ending. This seems to be a pattern that will echo throughout the lives of this Concept. At least it will come to stop eventually.

And on the subject of Hyracotherium, this is somewhat relevant.

Did Klaus Fuch's wife/lover ever kill herself or is this another sort of "l'm just going and extrapolating what happened onto my creation" type thing?
in other news, l really appreciated this Christmas present:pinkiehappy:

6767736

No, but suicide ran in the family of the Human, Klaus Fuchs. His grandmother killed herself; his mother killed herself by drinking hydrochloric acid (a terrible way to go) in 1931, and his sister Elisabeth (who had been a prisoner of the Nazis for a time) killed herself by throwing herself off a train in August 1939.

Raindew wasn't Schwarzwalder Fox's wife, but rather his mistress. What drove her insane were the mind games that D inflicted on her. D actually wasn't trying to kill her -- he was by his lights being amusing. You'll note he wasn't actually happy about her death.

Obviously, Pony Fuchs' life isn't a perfect parallel with Human Fuchs; for one thing, the Manehattan Project was started around 1934 and completed in 1938; it deterred what would have been the G2 equivalent of the Second World War from ever happening. Our Earth wasn't so fortunate.

6766996

Fixed my typo.

Fluttershy made her mistakes earlier in life and recovered with the help of Rarity. Also, she's stronger willed than Raindew. But yes, they're both Incarnations of the same Cosmic Concept, and D actually liked Raindew more than he's admitting to himself. That sort of thing is why this is Tragedy.

Heh, the My Little Hyracotheria are cute! Makes me want to write a fanfic in which the Mane Six have their minds cast back 50 million years and have to figure out how to make it back to their proper time, while being hunted by various large Eocene predators. Of course, in Hyracotherial forms, they wouldn't have their full power levels.

instead of giving me the cold shoulder because she says I'm too cruel and never learn anything.

Ironically, did you see where in the PRIME Pony POV Verse, that Discord is given his clue he can't ignore?

Fluttershy didn't break like Raindew, which I think broke Discord.

And -- hmm -- all those monsters I unleashed on their world, thousands of years ago. I notice that the monsters are gone. But the Ponies are still here.

Can't argue with mathematics.

I hold that suicide gets you a one way ticket to hell. Sorry. That's just part of who I am. It's still the act of murdering yourself. Sorry. :-( I hope you don't hate me for that. I consider you a friend.

So she deserves some respect -- more than D is willing to give her.

Nice science at the end there. Cool.

6768234

The part where Discord kills and resurrects that Pony when he first comes to that world?

Fluttershy didn't break like Raindew, which I think broke Discord.

Fluttershy also had some warning of with what she was dealing. Raindew thought she was dealing with a smart but otherwise normal stallion.

And Discord had mellowed a bit between the fIRST Age of Wonders and the Second Age of Wonders. Among other things, in the early part of that incarnation, he'd been Dissy. And during the time of his rule, he no longer wanted to wipe out Ponykind. He'd changed his mind about that.

I hold that suicide gets you a one way ticket to hell. Sorry. That's just part of who I am. It's still the act of murdering yourself. Sorry. :-( I hope you don't hate me for that. I consider you a friend.

I think that suicide is an extraordinarily bad idea -- one of the worst possible -- but I don't think that it makes one evil to the point of warranting eternal damnation. One, after all, owns one's own life if one owns nothing else in the world. I certainly don't think poor Raindew should be doomed to such a fate. She was, fundamentally, an extremely good Pony. She just had the misfortune to encounter something both very evil and very cunning.

Of my Mane Six, Fluttershy and Rarity have contemplated suicide. They didn't do it, though -- they're stronger than that.

Raindew just wasn't as strong, even though she was a facet of the same Being as is Fluttershy. I can't hate her for that -- only feel sorry for her. Killing her off was a difficult choice for me, but I wanted to show how Discord can, casually and with no extreme malice, wind up destroying even a Pony he likes. Especially this early, not-even-considering-reform, Discord.

I believe that Discord is far more responsible for her death than she herself. He played with her in a manner which he knew would greatly hurt her. He just didn't know that she would die from it. That's, at least, reckless endangerment and depraved indifference, in legal and moral terms.

Schwarzwalder Fuchs is not a particularly-admirable character. He's an ideological fanatic, a traitor, and a major jerk. He's not as bad as Wind Whistler later judges him as being (but note: she doesn't actually hate him), but he's somepony who had no problem with taking advantage of Raindew. But he didn't want to cause her death. He liked her too much, even though not enough to really make any effort to protect her.

Actually, Discord liked her as well. He's trying to deny this to himself, because it would involve admitting to himself that he thinks Ponies have value -- which if true would force him to alter his plans, and he's stubborn.

But then, I liked Raindew as well, and I'm rather sorry I had to kill her off -- but if I didn't, this story would be far too Nerfed.

I wish her soul well.

6768278

No no no, I mean in the recent Finale chapters.
