Discord has lived a long life. One full of pain, mistakes, and betrayal. After his redemption at the hands of his friends, he wonders if all can truly be forgiven and what it is inside him that they can all see. More importantly, he wonders, is it already too late?

“I'm afraid I know exactly who I'm messing with, Flim Skim. And I know exactly why. And I know you don't know the same about me. Therefore, I am at the advantage... aside from the obvious hostage, of course.”

A mysterious horse appears in the dead of night, and brings a catastrophe on the Flim Flam Brothers that neither of them could have ever been prepared for: he kidnaps Flam, and leaves Flim with only a set of strange instructions in order to get his brother back. He must search all over Equestria to find certain things written on a scroll, and he must find the most reliable pony he knows to lead him to the Mordant Phooka.

Unfortunately, when he finds her, she doesn't know if she's willing to help him out. Just how is she supposed to trust him after all he's done? How does she know it's not another scam, or some way to get back at her for messing up the twins' schemes before?

When the only other pony in Equestria who Flim trusts most besides his brother is Applejack, how is she supposed to trust him back?

Discord, after Tirek has gone back to his prison, has trouble dealing with his own inner demons. He knows what he did. He knows what he did was wrong. Unable to cope, he does the unthinkable.

He loses his mind.

Now, once things seem right again, Twilight is sent on a quest to discover what really happened to Discord, and moreso, how to save him from his worst enemy. With unexpected aid from unknown forces and a mystery to solve, will they be able to save the day in time? Or will all fall to Chaos?

“Did you see that? She smiled!”
“Maud Pie is the best!”
“Maud rocks!”
“With Maud we can be the Mane 7!”

Spike heard it. He heard it all.

This story is a sequel to Detente

Discord takes Fluttershy to see something chaotic he's made that he thinks will be considered harmless and beautiful -- rain made out of light. Fluttershy agrees, but fears that ponies won't accept it anyway. They discuss friendship, and Fluttershy comes to some unwanted conclusions regarding her own feelings. One-sided, mild Fluttercord.

This story is the bridge between Princess Twilight Sparkle Endcaps and Elements of Opposition. To those who have not read the story before, and who like happy endings: don't read the second chapter. It leads directly into Elements of Opposition, and is the main reason the story has a "Sad" tag.

Nopony ever said the friendship between Fluttershy and Discord would be an easy one. However, in the aftermath of all this, the master of confusion finds himself completely baffled by one thing. One question that in his entire life he'd never desired to have an answer to; why? Why after so many eons, was friendship important to him?

When Fluttershy wakes up to find Discord making breakfast in her kitchen, she knows it's going to be an interesting day, but then she discovers why he's come to see her: Discord wants a pet.
