However, Equestria has managed to weather the storm, comparatively mild when put up against the war with Tirek and the brutal Winter of Aftermath that followed. The crowning of another alicorn princess, the very daughter of Princess Celestia herself, will mark the true rallying point for Equestria's rebuilding.

But behind the scenes, trouble still lurks. Of Sombra's alleged successors; the Scions, only three are known - the fourth remains a mystery. Enemies within and without wait for their turn to strike. Once, Sunset Shimmer had desired nothing more than to return to Equestria and assume her rightful place as its supreme ruler. Instead, she discovered her place amongst the humans of the world she thought herself exiled to, never assuming that the students she’d bullied would become her best friends, nor that she would come to see an alternate version of Twilight Sparkle as not only a friend, but a sister. Yet it came to pass, and though the previous year had been hard, Sunset had finally let go of the past.

Yet the past refused to let go of her. Something dark and sinister reached from beyond to hurt Twily, buffeting her mind with nightmares of strangely-colored ponies and macabre events to come. Sunset recognized it as her homeworld, especially the description of a dark, twisted version of Sunset’s own unicorn form. Furthermore, the discovery of a second link to Earth deepened the mystery: an ancient Italian artifact adorned with cutie marks, amongst them those of Queen Faust and Princess Celestia.

In the end, Sunset chose to rush to her foster sister’s defense, knowing that the path would lead her back to her haunted past, and possibly into the vengeful hooves of Celestia. But what she didn’t know would be that it could lead her to her own mirror image, a darker version of herself:

A version known as Raspberry Beryl.

After the eventful summer that found Sable Loam involved with warring mercenary factions and the very firmaments of the universe, the ex-army school teacher finds himself becoming the Admiral of the newly ascended Princess Sunset Shimmer's fledgling guard: the new SIRENs. Between that and his job at Equestria County Alternative High, Sable hardly has any time for a personal life.

Enter Troubleshoes Clyde, a talented mechanic and former Navy SEAL. Sable thinks he might be of some use, but unfortunately, Troubleshoes has his own string of bad luck. Problems with his family and his checkered past end up bleeding into Sable's own life, and he finds himself in the cross hairs of some truly dangerous people. The new leader of SIREN must put his team to the test if they want to avoid a repeat of the summer that never was.

A side story to The Golden Age of Apocalypse

Everyone has their secrets; Sunset Shimmer knows this more than most. After all, it was only last summer that her heritage as a pony from Equestria was revealed to her adoptive family. Now, despite complications from living in a new timeline, life is slowly returning to normal for Sunset and her friends. Except, her official coronation in Equestria is right around the corner, and things with her friends aren't all sunshine and rainbows.

Pinkie Pie's history with the Club comes back to haunt her in a way she hoped would never come to pass: a way that might hurt those closest to her. And then there's Applejack, who's keeping something secret from Sunset herself. What's more, Applejack's secret may just be the key to discovering the truth behind Sunset's dark premonitions. Indeed, the confessions of Sunset's friends may cast light on the shadows where sinister forces loom and gather.
