Epilogue

Epilogue

Twilight sat outside the castle facing the towering monument of Princess Celestia. It was sunny, not too warm, calm, a beautiful day. All the parties celebrating her victory had passed and she was about to return to Ponyville to resume her life as it was before this fiasco. Twilight let out a sigh and looked up at Celestia’s smiling face as it stared down at the three ponies around her hooves. Twilight then looked at the inscription at the base of the statue.

Princess Celestia
A friend to most
A leader to all
Forever in our hearts

Twilight’s eyes turned sad and she let out another sigh. She heard hoofsteps behind her and turned to see Princess Luna approaching her. Twilight smiled and waited for the Princess to join her at the monument. Luna stopped just a few feet behind Twilight and exhaled.

“Your friends are waiting at the train station, you know.” Luna informed Twilight.

“Yeah, I know.” Twilight replied. Luna let out a little hum and sat beside Twilight in the grass. For a second, neither spoke, but only admired the beautiful depiction of their dearly departed Princess. Overhead, a number of birds let out their lively cries. Twilight almost envied their carefree existence and made a mental note to live the rest of her life in a similar manner.

“You know, Celestia and I had always known that we would pass in time.” Luna told Twilight, “We are both in dangerous positions. As a place of royalty, it only makes sense that one of use would be killed at some point.”

“If you’re trying to make me feel better, it’s not exactly working…” Twilight said flatly.

“Do let me finish, Twilight.” Luna said lightly. Twilight smiled and nodded. Luna looked up at Celestia’s form again and continued, “Celestia urged that she never want to have this kingdom run by a single ruler again.”

“Well, if one of you dies, how can you avoid that?” Twilight asked.

“Twilight… Celestia wanted you to take her place.” Luna revealed. Twilight’s eyes shot open and she looked at Luna with awe.

“L-Luna… I couldn’t run a country…” Twilight said, “I can barely run a library.”

“I know you would be up to the task, Twilight.” Luna said, “And Celestia personally chose you.”

“And did you choose somepony?” Twilight asked, “Maybe there’s another suitor.”

“I actually suggested, and my sister agreed, that Shining Armor be considered.” Luna said.

“My brother?!” Twilight asked incredulously.

“He is already captain of the royal guard.” Luna said.

“It… makes sense.” Twilight said. “But he would hold that over me until the end of time…”

“So what do you say?” Luna asked Twilight in all seriousness.

“What do I say?” Twilight repeated. Twilight chuckled a little bit. “I say… I want to go home.”

Luna smiled at hearing that.

“Very wise, Twilight.” Luna said, “But I will ask you again in the future.”

“I look forward to it.” Twilight said with a smirk. Twilight stood and faced away from Celestia’s monument. Luna stood with her and accompanied Twilight as they walked out of the gardens. Despite what felt like leaving Celestia behind, Twilight was happy. She hadn’t had the luxury of saying she was happy in a long time, but now she finally felt it.

Happy.

“Rainbow Dash is moving in with me, by the way.” Twilight commented as they walked.

“Oh is she?” Luna asked.

“Yeah.” Twilight replied, “I’m… well, I’m excited.” Twilight said, then laughed.

“You two make an excellent couple.” Luna observed.

“I’m glad you think so.” Twilight said. The ponies had left the gardens and were now taking a shortcut through the castle to the train station on the other side. Their conversation had long breaks, yet it was nice. It was peaceful.

Peace.

“You know… I’m remembering something your friend Fluttershy said to you while my sister and I were observing you through our mirror.” Luna said.

“And what is that?” Twilight asked.

“As I recall, she told you that she believed that no creature’s heart is too far gone to reach.” Luna said.

“I have just begun to remember that conversation again…” Twilight said, “It was in the middle of the night, right before I attacked Carousel Boutique.”

“Indeed.” Luna agreed.

“Why have you just remembered it now?” Twilight asked.

“Because it describes the condition you were in.” Luna said, “And that you were never too far gone to reach. Every creature has a heart, and every heart has a light, no matter how dark.”

“Hm…” Twilight said happily, “You know what? You’re right.”

“Of course I am.” Luna said lightly.

The pair had arrived at the opposite end of the castle. Before them was the train station. Twilight could see the train coming down the track toward them. That beautifully whimsical train would carry Twilight home, to Ponyville, to her friends.

Home.

“Thanks, Luna, for everything.” Twilight said to the princess.

“Don’t be a stranger. I’ll be awake in the day from now on, you know!” Luna said to Twilight.

“We’ll be in touch.” Twilight replied happily. She spied Rainbow Dash, who waved at her energetically, then pointed at the ever-approaching train.

“I’d better go, don’t wanna miss the train!” Twilight said.

“Stay safe, Twilight Sparkle.” Luna said. Twilight ran over to the train station in just enough time to hop on board with Rainbow Dash. She took her seat beside the mare of her dreams and intertwined their hooves.

“Where’d you disappear to?” Rainbow Dash asked.

“Oh… just saying goodbye to a friend.” Twilight replied lightly.

Rainbow Dash hummed happily in response. The train lurched forward and took off, away from Canterlot and onward to Ponyville. Twilight Sparkle looked at her reflection in the window and saw for the first time that the red scar that had served as a reminder of her grim condition was now gone. Twilight smiled and placed her head against Rainbow Dash’s shoulder, ready to take on whatever the rest of her life had to offer.

And this time, she knew that she would live long enough to see it through.

673937 you sir are scary:twilightoops:

Brilliant story, a shame about Celestia dying, but the overall plot was executed nicely. Any plans for a sequel or after chapter when Luna asks Twilight again or what she does in the mean time as soul ruler?

GENIUS this is one of the best Grimdark stories ive read! Cheers to you Author for showing that no matter how dark there is still light deep inside. :pinkiehappy:

Well I would consider it a dark story instead of grimdark. In my opinion grimdark tends to have killed every kind of hope and happiness you have at the end of the story.

Congratulations for the end of a great story. Thank you!

i vaguely remember saying that i thought something like this was gonna happen, only difference from what i said was that her friends never out right judged her when she told them, other than that i guessed pretty much exactly how the outline of the story line would go...except for one thing: that celestia died, i didn't even come close to guessing that:twilightoops:. that part was incredibly good, it added so damn much depth and so many more nuances to the story!:pinkiehappy: so all in all: incredibly good story, really loved it, worth every second!:raritystarry:
it would be nice to know what happens in the future though, seeing as a few things are left which ppl would be curious about; like luna's rule, twi' fitting back into society (considering that she has probably made more than a couple of enemies), twi's niece and of course how things turn out with luna's offer to twi (as well as a few other things). maybe a sequel or a couple of post-epilogue chapters (appendixes or something)?

edit: incomplete tag on purpose?

I applaud your efforts in writing down such a wonderful read. Authors Like you are the reason i run on less than 3 hours of sleep per day

The end. Impressive story, loved it. Though I have to say, Terra really had almost no influence on the story. But ah well.

'…Luna said, “And that you were never too far gone to reach. Every creature has a heart, and every heart has a light, no matter how dark.”'
Ahh! She said it! She said it!

684408 its grimdark until the end is the way i would describe it

Interesting... So Celestia's genius chessmaster-status is verified, Twilight lives and goes to raise the sun in her place, and live in ponyville instead of become a princess. Cadance isn't even hinted at, but Shining Armor IS... Twilight kills the physical manifestation of her darkside in a very brutal manner (I especially liked that part) and you end on an inspiring note. Very good sir. Very good. You mention Twi casting her fairy wings for mobility for a bit, but she doesn't become an alicorn...

I suppose it might just be my reading style, but this felt a bit light on depth in some parts. It feels like you're only skimming the surface of this particular philosophical frame of mind, but at the same time it does seem to manage rather well for doing that. Nope... I suppose it's just my WPM reading rate.

The world is not made up of evil people and good people, We all have Light and Dark inside us, But its up to us to chose the right path..

Thank you for pointing that out!

all i can say is, Well done sir, 9/10, would, and will read again!
<3

684408 Ah yes my mistake. But this story was Grimdark for Celestia.

a fitting end to a good story you have the ksoa :pinkiehappy:

good work. sadaly took this out on the read later and put it on fave.

685593
Not necessarily a mistake. Just a different opinion.

I seem to be getting this question a lot, so here are my thoughts in regards to a sequel:
We'll see. I really want to move on to a different project for now and get my head out of this universe for a bit, but who knows? Perhaps I'll come back. I do already have a plethora of ideas to use if a sequel does, indeed, happen. I guess the only thing that I can say is keep following what I do, and maybe someday I'll get around to it. There's a whole summer ahead of us!

Thank you all for reading and following through to the end!

686029
That means more to me than you probably realize!:pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy::pinkiehappy:

*claps claps and claps some more* You sir have made it to the elite of story writers congrats!!! I had kept putting this story off for so long and the only reason I tagged it to read was because of the TwiDash. When I saw it was complete I felt ashamed and started reading and to my pleasant suprise it blew away my expectations. Bravo and I know it would be too much but I wish to see more of an outcome with this, especially where their relationship goes.

:twilightsmile::rainbowkiss:

You get fifty cupcakes :pinkiegasp:

This story is just... wow. I've read some dark stuff before, but this was just something else all together. Bravo... write more like it, and you have a fan for life.

685391
No problem at all :pinkiehappy: I coudn't stop reading the entire way through, you have a very fine talent. Your story makes Fluttershy go *yay* :yay:

This is an amazing story, but not sure if I'm :fluttercry: or :pinkiehappy:.
Oh well, I'll settle for :pinkiesad2:.

699467
Or the author can't remember where in the story that line is an is too lazy to go looking for it (presently):derpytongue2:
I'll get to it, that was not intentional! :pinkiesad2:

699596 I'm sorry. :fluttershyouch:

Rolled and Bust...:facehoof:
699802 As for the story: :moustache: :moustache: :moustache: :moustache: :moustache:

Hmm... Ok good story.

Pros: Decent grammar/Spelling, emotional storyline:raritycry::pinkiehappy::pinkiesad2::flutterrage::twilightsheepish:, a few unexpected and story changing twists (omg celestia died? :fluttercry::fluttershbad:), touching (if not a little bit generic) relationship with dash:rainbowkiss::twilightsmile:.

Cons: Occasional "filler" character/events like Cadence pregnancy and Queen Terra encounters both never really mattered storywise as the "History of Equestria" book got the effect across just fine and cadence had pretty much NOTHING to do with any story plots involved (not even really for moral support), some minor spelling/grammar errors, lack of exploration into certain aspects and other options (is breaking a unicorn horn fatal and why wasn't this option explored? What exactly is this darkness and where did it come from? Why did "Queen" Terra suddenly have a change of heart despite Celestia dying at Twilight's possessed horn?)

Other: I think this just might be me but it felt a little rushed at times and that you could have drawn out and added a few more scenes exploring what could have caused the curse and maybe a few relationships between some of the side characters, maybe even make your "filler" characters be more useful to the story like cadence (goddess of love? Really? She could have dropped some pretty nice hints that led to twilight's connections with it being more than just one kind of love but having the leads not be figured out until the end there!), also felt the ending didn't quite get the closure everypony needed. maybe OKAY endding for twilight, dash, and luna but everyone else (spike, other four of main six, shining, Equestria at large perhapes)

Over all, good story although I just have one question...

Y U NO MAKE TWIDASH CLOP HERE?! (lol okay, I admit that was a troll question!)

700143
FINALLY someone voices the concern that I've had since the very beginning! It is rushed, I know that, I am aware of it, but NOPONY said anything! That's my fault, really, I'm too A.D.D while I'm writing.
I suppose I never really did elaborate this, but the curse is just supposed to be a (very, very rare) random occurrence that is basically just a wrench thrown in the gears of a happy life, kinda like cancer. I only wanted Cadence in there because it felt like Shining Armor should be with his wife if he's off duty and he's having a visit with Luna about the situation. Also, personal headcanon is that a unicorn's horn is just an amplification device, not the source of all magical power... which could have also been elaborated on.
And that clop question...
Even if it WAS a troll question, I personally find nothing wrong with clop; I just can't write it (to save my LIFE). If you want implied lemon, then you can say it happened right after the scene where Twilight tells Rainbow Dash that it's their last night together. Go crazy.

... I might just fill that little gap... I didn't think that this story could really benefit from clop mid story but a side story link might do... I'll see what I can come up with after reading the latest DH blog.

Edit: Scratch that... I got a little ways in before something else came up in RL, I'll finish later.

702187
Your comments fill me with happiness:rainbowkiss:

The End

Now I am sad... :fluttercry:
No more No Matter How Dark
It felt just a bit rushed, but that's proably just me wanting this to be magically resurrected, continued, etc. I doubt you want to hear all the pros and cons, so, since the pros outweigh the cons, hear is my conclusion in three words: Best. Fic. EVER! (I think...)

A plus side to this is that Twilight gets to live with that awesome scar.

T4

Dear sweet Celestia.....WHY was I putting off reading this!? This was one of the times when I returned to a fic and continued reading until 4:15 AM. You got me really emotionally hooked into this story, you did very, very, very well

I simply lost myself in that story. There is nothing I can say. It's great, awesome, 20% cooler,... but these words are not enough. I think I'll give this second read later, because I really enjoyed it.

You know, this is the only completed, multi-chapter story that I have actually finished. It's so well written and it was an emotional roller-coaster ride for me. I do hope there's a sequel to this. I would absolutely LOVE to see what you'd do with it.

I can't favorite this story enough.

743348
Heh, no, I thought I was being creative... I hope that author doesn't come knocking on my door demanding my head for stealing his name, because I didn't know. :derpytongue2: It just makes sense, Celestia being sun, Luna being moon, Terra being earth.

I really liked this story, usually i don't go for anything this dark, but you pulled it off real well, although i am curious how celestia would plan on having twi rule, would they forever have a dual mortal immortal monarchy or would she somehow gain immortality? :rainbowhuh:
and I just realized that you did indeed have a hint to this earlier in the story when luna says she has power enough to move the sun. :trollestia:

By the way I very much like your username, i like pretty much all music but the harmony that you find in a picardy third is amazing one of the best ways to end a piece and tie it together, a good name foran author of your caliber:pinkiehappy:

its over?:fluttercry: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you know, you left an opening for a sequel. pm me and ill tell you why... BUT I DONT WANT IT TO BE OVER, IT IS THE BEST FANFICTION I HAVE EVER READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!:raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry::raritycry:

This story it just took all of my feels.

Truly it was a fantastic read. It may have seemed rush at points but the emotions you put into this greatly over compensate, in a good way, those moments.

I thank you, for writing such an amazing piece.

My friend, Iam glad that I finally read this story. It was a hell of a ride but I enjoyed every single minute. You got everything what a good story needs. Be proud of this amazing piece, and thanks sharing it with us.
Your new watcher,
Galicorn

Good story. Even though I can't stand TwiDash it was still a good read

1423192
Haha I know what you mean. For being so smart, Twilight can be rather unintelligent in her morning routine.

If I could like this one thousand times, I would:twilightsmile:
This is one of the best works of literature I've ever read:pinkiehappy:

Good fic overall only thing i didnt understand was why luna left celestia to fight twilight on her own knowing she couldnt handle her. Itd be easier if two goddesses restrained twilight together and had rainbow help the others and relapse made me :raritycry:. Still one of the most interesting fics gj sir:pinkiehappy:

(Some spoilers in this comment if you havent finished the fic)
This .. I ... Wait, let me find some words here, I know they should be lying around here somewhere.

Well, this was awesome, lets start at that.

Im a pretty new fan of MLP, have been around here for soon a month, but Im still getting pleasant suprises by all the different awesome fan-material created. :pinkiehappy:

You have written this story in a great way, and it's easy to follow the character(s) thoughts without many questions, as everything needed seems to be described (with some exceptions).

You described this curse in a way that made it fit in the world of MLP, eventhough, I sometimes got "worried" while reading that the happy world of MLP is turned into bloody wars with bones sticking out of bodies and blood splashing on walls.
Well, if someone concluded this fic with those words, Im not sure if I would read it, but, there was so much more. I mean, all the thoughts, stories, mysteries, and some well-implemented shipping.
The scenes of battle were harsh, but, the way You described them, made them easy to imagine, and, therefor, kind of "realistic" (if that word can be used here).

What also was nicely described was how the curse communicated with its bearer. What I mean are the steps that the curse started occuring without Twilights own mind being aware of it. Then they started a battle over control as the curse got stronger. And finally the curse started pushing Twilight herself back and taking over.
This process was indeed welldescribed. I like reading things where the actions are described to such a point that they are understandable, eventhough in the MLP-world they are powered by magic, it still makes sense in your explanations.

So, overall, highest rating from me, this was a awesome read!

Some criticism then: (Even more spoilers than earlier, so, a little warning if you havent read the story)

First of is when Twilight had decided that suicide was the way to go. She wrote a letter, and was all set up. But when she failed by herself, and RD stopped her, suddenly something happened and the world kept going like nothing happened.
I mean, surely she thought of something here that made her change her mind rapidly, and, eventhough I somehow can imagine what and why, it isnt there described, and therefor leaves a small little hole. But, its barely noticeable "all in all", such a small detail I mean

Second, this feels like just whining, but, the part where Celestia got killed. I cant say I enjoyed that part (it was sad is what I mean, not that it was badly written :twilightsheepish:)
A but here though, I would think that realisticly Twilight would have taken this letdown harder. I mean, she saw her .. teacher/princess/old friend/"mother" get killed in front of her, and couldnt help out. I think that she would get more depressed, rather than shrug it off the way she seemed to do.
- Nah, I scapped this note, ill leave it to read, but after thinking it through it didnt make much sense, i mean, this is what happened in your world, and, I think that this story does indeed add up, so, Im leaving this so I wont change the comment to much, but, it isnt very relevant :twilightblush:

But again, this was a very great read, thanks so very much for putting it up there so everyone can enjoy it!
Liked, faved and will be cheking out your other fics :)

EDIT: (MAJOR SPOILER)
Anyhow, I couldnt find the video earlier, so I dismissed this part of the comment, but, this section, ending of chapter 11/beginning of 12,

The only thing that echoed through her mind a thousand times over was the last thing she said to Princess Luna.

“This ends tonight.”

And indeed, this nightmare would end tonight. Twilight entered the throne room finally and looked at the repaired throne that stood proudly at the helm of the cavernous space. Twilight could only think fondly back to a time where things were much more simple, back before Celestia’s life had been taken away, when everything and everypony was happy.

kept remining my brain of this video, it felt like it was a possible outcome. Hm, got to continue the search of the story behind the video in question. Nevertheless, your turnout of events was great, if not greater though :)

Could you get an editor to review the first chapter :v
There's too much telling, not enough showing, and the character dialogue is stale. :l
