Afterword: Going Home

Afterword: Going Home

“So… why don’t you want to go?”

“I told you, it might be dangerous. Besides, that place brings back memories that still hurt a bit. I will visit the ruins eventually, my dear, but I need time to get over it.”

“But Auntie Rose, Atreid and Harko are constantly telling me that we should go and see the ruins of New Pegasus together!”

“Atreid and Harko are both grown up ponies now… They can do as they wish, and besides, they’re just like their father.”

“Brave?”

“Reckless and a bit nuts.” Rose laughed calmly.

“But I want to go!”

“And you will go!” Pet entered the room and patted the young colt on his head. “You’ve got your Cutie Mark, and I promise that I’ll take you to the ruins. Not today, though… you need to go to school.”

“But I don’t like school, Uncle Pet. I’m too smart for that, I always know the right answer!”

“Of course you do. You’re just like your father.” Pet smiled. “Now get a move on, young one!”

“Fine…” The colt grumbled. “Bye, Auntie Rose! Bye, Uncle Pet!”

He waved and dashed out of the room, leaving Pet and Rose alone. The pegasus moved and kissed the mare, who smiled and caressed him in return. Ever since she had arrived at their new home, she had shown her feelings towards Petlyakov overtly, and true love had bloomed out of the couple.

“That kid is terrible.” Rose shook her head.

“He’s called Free Sight for a reason, Rose.” Pet smiled.

“I think Avro had a moment of clairvoyance when she named him.” Rose laughed. “What worries me is something else, though.”

“What is it, honey?”

“His Cutie Mark. Have you seen it?”

“Yes, a banner with the red eye of his father and a sword.”

“What do you think it will mean?”

“Frankly, I don’t know. I guess he will follow his father’s ways.”

“But what about the sword?”

“It might not mean anything, Rosie. My Cutie Mark has a dagger on it too, and I’m no killer.”

“But you were a soldier.”

“An engineer, honey. I never fought a single fight.”

“Yes, but…”

“Take it easy, Rose! He’s just a colt right now, and I can understand that he wants to learn about his past. Atreid and Harko go there every now and then, and so do Dee and Nadyr. All of us need to pay honors to our past.”

“Yes, but… I don’t know if that’s the best idea.”

“Why not?”

“Because of the rumours that run around in the Wasteland… voices of a lone wanderer, a blue unicorn with a white mane, covered in bandages, walking around in the desert… looking from a distance. Could it be him?”

“Those are nothing more than stupid ramblings of drunken caravaneers. You know that Farsight is dead, Rose. Nothing could survive an explosion like the one of the Enola… not to mention the radiation.”

“But what if he had another ace up his sleeve?”

“Rose, he’s dead. My crew has searched far and wide for proof of his survival, even Avro has, but we have found nothing more than the large mark of the explosion. It’s simply impossible, darling.”

“You can’t prove that, Pet. Imagine what would happen if Free Sight met his father in such a condition!”

“As long as he wasn’t nuts, I wouldn’t mind.” Pet laughed.

“Cut it out, Pet!” Rose hit the pegasus with her hoof.

“All right, have it your way.” Pet shrugged. “We’ll keep searching for that mysterious wanderer. However, you should give Free Sight the chance to make up with his past. He deserves it.”

“Fine, fine… just go.”

Pet smiled and trotted out of the room, leaving Rose alone with her thoughts. It had been almost seven years since they had arrived at Fortune’s Loss, and the community had grown to be a pretty little town. Every pony from New Pegasus had relocated without much trouble, and things were starting to look up for them, now that the Republic and the Tsardom had left Neighvada out of their plans. She walked out into the street and trotted towards the town entrance, where a large stone statue of a pony stood welcoming the visitor. It was a young unicorn stallion, dressed in a sharp suit and wearing a PipBuck on his forehoof. He looked at the newcomers with a confident and defiant face, proving that he was the one to follow, the one to believe in… the one that gave his life for them.

“Thank you, Farsight.” Rose let a tear roll down her cheek. “Wherever you are.”

“Rose!” The voice of a mare rang from the skies. Such an uncanny entrance… it had to be Avro. Rose looked up to see the pegasus descending in circles to where she was standing.

“Hello, Avro. How are you?”

“Fine, thanks, Rose.” She smiled. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t pick up Free Sight before. I guess you managed to convince him to go to school, didn’t you?”

“Pet did, actually.” Rose laughed. “Free Sight keeps insisting on visiting the ruins of New Pegasus.”

“He can be as stubborn as his father.” Avro smiled sadly, looking at the statue. “He will have to go someday, though. He deserves that.”

“You’re the second pony who tells me that, the first one being Pet.”

“Pet and I think alike in many things.” The pegasus shrugged.

“Avro… what do you think about Free Sight’s Cutie Mark? It worries me.”

“Why?” Avro asked. “Because of the sword?”

“Yes.” Rose mumbled. “I care a lot about him, and I don’t want him to go on some loony crusade. That’s why I try to keep him at a safe distance of his past.”

“Rose, don’t worry so much about it. Free Sight will be fine, with all of us watching.”

“We have our lives to live, Avro.”

“Yes, but my life is his, Rose.” Avro smiled. “I will be with him, protecting him when he needs it, helping him when he asks for it, and caring for him until my last breath. You’ll have foals one day, and you will understand.”

“Of course.” Rose nodded slowly. “Maybe I’m just… worrying too much.”

“Yes, but anyway, I can’t thank you enough.” Avro smiled. “I need to go to work, Rose.”

“One more thing before you leave, Avro… what about the rumours?”

“What rumours?”

“Those of the lone wanderer… the burnt blue stallion.”

“You think it can be Farsight?” Avro sighed. “I don’t know, Rose. I’ve been searching for him almost everyday since I first heard the story, but honestly, I think it’s a legend… like the one of the Light Bringer, you know? Virtuous ponies that get elevated into almost mythical beings. After the blow he delivered to the NER and the Tsar, I am certain that the inhabitants of Neighvada see him as a spirit that defends the Territory. The Light Bringer sacrificed herself for the rest of the world… or so it says in the book.”

“I read it, Avro.” Rose smiled. “What would Farsight’s virtue be, then?”

“I don’t know, you’re the one that knew him better.” Avro smiled.

“Reason.”

“What?”

“I said that I suppose that Farsight’s virtue would have to be reason. He always knew what to do and why to do it… and that was why he was never defeated.”

“Yes…” Avro smiled sadly. “But look at the cost he had to incur.”

“He would have said that it was a calculated risk.” Rose laughed.

“That would have been typical of him.” Avro laughed as well. “Anyway, Rose, I must be going now. See you later!”

“Later, Avro.” Rose sighed and saw the pegasus fly away.

After Avro disappeared on the horizon, Rose turned around and took one last look at the billboard that had been built at the entrance of the village. The words were clearly readable from a distance.

3822052 I didn't want to risk it with a griffin. I prefer just ponies for a cover.

It was nice. I enjoy how you made him the most badass Fallout character out there. For the record though, I have to totally change my ending now. But I guess great minds think alike.

3822068
You speciest bastard! It always drives me insane when they say racist because technically they're not racist, they're speciest. Heh, you potentially made Farsight the burned man. Interesting...and here I thought you might go with ghoul but burned man is also pretty good. Then again, the lone wanderer also let's him act like a hero for Little Pip's desires.

3822077 Really glad you enjoyed it. It's so good to have reached the end.

3822095 I wanted to close the story, but at the same time, I also wanted to leave an open ending. Anything can come from this, don't you think?

3822099
I think it works and it wraps up a lot of plot...except for the one thing that bothers me is that we don't see Avro at the end. I don't feel closure with her character which bugs me a bit. I wanted to see HER with the child, so that we, the readers, could get some closure on what her true character was. I like the use of Rose and Pet but it's missing that little touch.

I also notice how you don't deny the speciest comment :P

3822103 You've got your point. I might give her a couple of lines.

3822109
message me if you do. I might not notice otherwise. So what's your plans now that the story is basically done?

I see you've finished your story, and what a sight it is now! I remember back, a little over a year ago, when I first met you. At the time we were both small, and probably still are. But we're bigger now, S3rb4n, and for that I'm glad. I'm glad to have been able to help you write this thing, in my own little way. I hope to read your tale in its entirety soon, and hope you good fortunes.

thank you for the ride.great story can not wait for where you go next in the wasteland

Remember always watching

3822235 No problem, it was my pleasure.

3822244
3822221 Easy now, or I might disappear. :raritywink:

3822171 I think the market for gratitude is quite stale these days. You wouldn't get much for it.

3822114 Yes, we have grown and the world around us has changed. We are not the same... we are more experienced and stronger, so to speak. I hope you enjoy reading my fic and I wish you the very best in your writing endeavours.

3822112 There you go, I've updated it.

Ah, the story comes to a satisfying and reluctant close! Good show, old bean! :rainbowlaugh:

I've found myself walking alongside Farsight, I haven't been able to do that in a long time in fics. Although twisted fates and martyrdom will follow his legacy, he'll be one the Wasteland remembers regardless.

Thank you for sharing your story, Farsight, the future of ponykind depends on those who walked before to tell the story of life as it was so that we as a whole may improve.

And then Farsight was a Canterlotian Ghoul.:rainbowlaugh:
'Joke's on you, old boy!' - Saddle

3822344 Hahaha, yes, his tale had to be told. In a world where only the ruthless survive, his case needed to be enlightened.

I am really glad that you enjoyed the fic and that you managed to understand Farsight from the beginning to the end. This proves that I have been able to do something worthy out of this fic.

No Goddesses, no Princesses. Only me. - Farsight (alleged)

3822303
Very good, feels much better and we get a feeling of understanding with Avro. Also, I like the idea she proposes. :)

3822361 Yes, that does give closure to all the main characters... and it doesn't spoil the open ending.

3822351
"I can finally die in peace..."

"I..I'm alive?"

"Why is my ear in my mouth?"

"FUCK!"
:rainbowlaugh:
sequel!

3822366 LOL, that would be funny... still, if there ever gets to be a sequel, which I don't want to write as of now it would be centered on Free Sight, Atreid and Harko.

3822368
:twilightblush:
hehe..yeah, I get ya.
Just my dark, very dark, comedy side speaking to me. It'd be the cruelest fate he could endure. Which with all things considered, seems like it'd be the final joke in his life.:rainbowlaugh:

3822391 The ultimate twist of fate, for a pony that twisted others' fates. Quite karmatic.

3822501 It was mine to have you as a reader and collaborator.

He took the drink from the purple space dumpster which we talked about, didn't he.

3822644 That will forever be a mystery. :raritywink:

3822649

"I take your pain! I put my straw in it! *slurping noise* And I drink it up!"
:rainbowwild:

3826052 Don't drink too much. It might end up hurting you.

I have to say... I'm a little sad to see the "Complete" tag.
I've been following this story since chapter 1 and I have to say that it id definatly one of my favorites, right up there with the original and Pink Eyes.

3827674 Don't be. A good story is the one that knows when to end.

Glad that you think so... It's flattering, actually. I never expected to be compared to the original or Pink Eyes.

Well, here we are. End of the road, it's been a great pleasure reading this fic and can't really say anything bad about it (except for some he/her confusion sometimes). My only regret was that as soon as I saw this fic mark as complete, I burn it through like there is no tomorrow. Now feeling a bit empty yet bitter-sweet at the same time. Here hope Farsight by some twisted fun by Discord (Sheo:CHEESE!) help him survived and will have a better reunion with everyone. On a side note I am a slight disappointed that none of the New Vegas companions make a cameo (I know Desert Rose does not count) , Cass or Raul anyone would have been fun or even the courier him/herself would been great! next fic, maybe *hint hint But that is and will be my only opinion, so long and till we meet again!

3827688 Thank you so much for your feedback. I am really glad that you enjoyed the time you spent reading Viva Las Pegasus, it makes me feel honored and it makes the time and effort needed to write it worthwhile.

About the companions... I wanted to stay as far away from the game as possible, while sticking to the setting, so that it would differ from the usual New Vegas sidefics. Hence the lack of game-inspired companions.

3827708 Yeah I agree with you on that concept, following the origin story by the book (game in this case) or similar would have been too predictable. That's why I said a cameo, which by my understanding means a brief appearance and usually does not make a impact on the storyline whatsoever. As I stated this is my opinion and should it be considerate I would be most happy, if no everything still stay the same and I liked the settings you have given to this fiction universe. Thank you.

3827841 You're welcome. It would fit, but I can't see where to put them. Things are good as they are now.

Finally.

I've finally finished reading this.

You have got to be one of the best writers that I've ever had the pleasure to come across.

Making more of this would be trying, and sequels are always annoying to write. But if you ever get the urge to write more, I'll be waiting.

Until then,
Fellclaw

3828790 Wow, I am honored to hear that. Thank you very much!

I don't know if I'll write a sequel or if I'll leave it to someone else. Anyway, I really appreciate your words.

S3rb4n you should definitely write a sequel, it should be about Farsight coming back, I think that would be awesome just think about it. :raritywink:

3836028 Sequel? But I've just finished writing this! :pinkiegasp: I need to take some rest before even thinking on writing again!

Damn. I feel like I missed out on something by reading this after it was finished...

3838022 Not really. It's all there for you to enjoy!

I know I'm late it the party on congratulating finshing this story. But bravo sir. You have made a very memorable tale and I loved every moment of it. Thank you. And looking forward to more of your works!

3840301 Many thanks for the kind words. I am honored to hear that, and your enjoyment makes my effort worthwhile.

Hear that sound?

It's the thundering roar of a standing ovation.

3847819 Thank you, thank you. *bows on stage* You honor me with those words.

3855010 Of course Stuka is best griffin! She's warm and cuddly, and nopony will pick on you while she's around!

3855165 {transmission begins} [in the background, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-flat major can be heard] Hooooly shit. This was a hella ride you've taken us on S3rb4n, if I do say so myself. Also, would you look at that, a finished Fo:E story, now that is a rarely witnessed occurrence. I'm slightly at loss for words right now, because I simply don't know how to feel. On one hand, the ending didn't leave a bitter aftertaste in my mouth and on the other, the burnt stallion. That FUCKING cliffhanger. What a way to end a splendid story. This also implies a sequel and for that I am chuffed as all hell (can hell be chuffed?).
I haven't commented for the past two chapters simply because, for some stupid reason, I was not notified via the means of e-mail that a new chapter was out. I shall try to make up for this travesty.
Enola. That name. I see what you did there, I really do, made me smirk a little (at my own perception of details small and fine, of course). A truly masterful ending to a truly masterfully written piece of literature. Fuck those people who say this isn't literature. I'll do so myself. In the ass. With a crowbar. That's glowing hot. With the hooked end. Yeah, I totally will do that.
I've been with this story since the beginning, watched it grow and evolve (like a pokemon of sorts) and now I feel a sort of "fatherly pride" at seeing it all grown up and ready to move on to a new stage of life (sequel I mean), even though I had absolutely NO input into it's creation. As well as that, at the very end, your story made me actually laugh out loud and not many things can say they managed that.
-But janekfan- I hear you ask -you didn't say what that thing was!
Patience, my child, patience, I was just getting to that. The Tsardom's capital is in Quebuck, which I'm guessing is based on Quebec. You see, Quebec is in Canada and the mental image of a barbaric and brutal empire, one clearly based on the Legion, that originated in Canada is for some reason IMMENSELY hilarious to me. I read all three of the last chapters back-to-back whilst listening to Mozart and I have to say that His Sinfonia concertante for violin & viola in E-flat Major as well as Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-flat Major mentioned earlier compliment the chapters very well. You, yes you, reading this, whether you are S3rb4n or someone else entirely, should go youtube them or something. They are really good. Well this is it. Viva las Pegasus is over. I feel rather sad and I'm eagerly awaiting the SEQUEL. *stands up, straightens himself, clicks his heels and salutes* Forward, to glory!
Shedding a single, manly tear-
-janekfan
{transmission ends abruptly}
P.S. Achievement get: Finished an Fo:E story.
P.S.2 SEQUEL PLOX

3858350 Wow, I feel absolutely honored by those words. Being regarded as literature is... humbling. I am really, really glad that you enjoyed the story to the end, and that you feel a personal connection towards it. I read someplace that a good story must leave a sad aftertaste, because you don't want it to end; but at the same time a story has meaning when it's complete, right?

Now, the ending... I like to leave endings slightly open, because the FoE world is out there, and in a way, it's alive. Nothing really ends, not even Littlepip is done for in the original. Ponies come and go, but legends endure... Littlepip, Puppysmiles, could Farsight become a legend someday? :raritywink:

Now, the Enola reference was pretty obvious, but logical at the same time. I liked it, so I wrote it down. And Quebuck was totally unintentional. It could have been Buckston, Maresachussets... but I chose Quebuck. But who knows what will happen if the Canadians get angry? :pinkiecrazy:

Now, about the music, I will definitely take your suggestion into account, and I welcome you to check this blog entry about the music of VLP. Some themes are really emotional, believe me.

Once again, thank you very much for your kind words.

Oh, and a sequel might or might not come. I think I've drained myself with this one, and any new works related to VLP would not reach the level of the original.

Very, very good.

One of the best Fics (not just FOE) I have read and I think you have real talent.

congrats on making a really good story and I wish you luck in other story's (if you wish) to make :)

3861616 Many, many thanks for those words. I'm glad that you've enjoyed the story.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!

First off I want to congratulate you on being one of the few that has actually finished their story. :pinkiehappy: As I believed for awhile it would not be finished at the stall when you got to Neigh Orleans. Secondly just wow what a trip you took us on the character development the loss the new faces. I was really hoping there would be a better chance for survival in the end but thats how it goes I guess. Though the burned man reference that leads to him maybe being alive I both like and drives me nuts at the same time. :pinkiecrazy: Will this be referenced in another story or will it all be a myth will his son meet him if so? Though those are questions to be answered in another story witch I'm not quite sure is gonna happen. lol Oh, Holy shit at those last few weeks with those chapter releases. With that I congratulate once again for your amazing story it will reside in my favorites for all time. :pinkiehappy:
