Wise Cracker

Just some guy, riding out his time.

T

Ocellus is struggling with her feelings, new and old, and contemplating just who or what she is, deep down. Now is not a good time for making big decisions.

So naturally, when a beauty contest breaks out in the Hive, the decision is made for her: she gets drafted to participate. Silver lining? If she wins, she might win the affections of the one crush she's had so far.

It's Ocellus versus a bunch of crazy girls who can barely read and take everything out of context.

This can only end well for everyone involved.

Author's note: technically set in the same universe as My Fey Lady, but not a direct sequel, and no prior reading required.

This is going to be AMAZING

Dan

I hope they got to see the Spider-Baby.

And the changelings around were discussing things as they usually did: by jumping to conclusions and ignoring all evidence or lack thereof.

So just like the ponies then! :trollestia:

Ocellus huffed. “Hey, you leave Viscera out of this. She didn’t know those birds were a fire hazard!”

Okay, there's a story there that I need details for now. :rainbowlaugh:

"And you can’t mind control me: I went to private school.”

Oh, I don't know...I've heard stories about some of those private schools... :facehoof:

Dunno if I'll stick with this one all the way through as it's not normally the sort of story I'd go for, but for now I'm willing to give it a shot.

She was very careful not to use the phrase ‘make money,’ as that had gotten a fair number of changelings in trouble after some very special craft time projects and a friendly visit from the Equestrian Revenue Service.

I wonder if that went down like this:

I mean, we saw what they did when they learned about Hearth's Warming. The phrase 'making money' around that sort of species is just asking for trouble at that point.

Part of Ocellus wanted to object to that dirty trick. A much larger part was wondering where in the friendship lessons the concept of ‘karma’ came in.

Oh, it's in there somewhere, I'm sure. :ajsmug:

Ocellus felt her heart sink. They got him to do this? How? When? Why?

In order asked: Yes. By asking Pinkie. Last night, obviously. Because Pinkie knew him, and Spike knows Pinkie, and Thorax knows Spike, and Pharynx knows Thorax. :trollestia:

Ocellus shuddered. “Sounds like he wants to send us into war.”

It's Pharynx--if there's no war involved, he's not happy.

Was that story propaganda by the Apple Family?

So this proved to be a nice, all around, little story and character study. Well done.

The Ocellus/Scutum ship is also a nice breath of fresh air--most people just automatically ship Ocellus with another of the Young 6, so it's nice to see someone break away from that trend with something new, particularly by shipping her with another changeling (which is surprisingly rare, I've found).

I haven't kept up with shipping fics or trends all that much, but I'm not sure I'd be able to write shipping Ocellus with a non-changeling, to be honest. Their whole society has been turned upside down, their numbers are small compared to the other nations, and they have that history they need to work through as a culture.

And that all just makes the angle of 'I need to make a family someday' too pressing. Besides that, it adds to the character building if you give a character a fleshed-out childhood, and that tends to include childhood friends.

Guess I'm a little more conservative/traditional than most in that regard.

I did end up liking Scutum as a concept, even if I didn't flesh him out all that much. He's different from most of my OC's - a little older, for starters, and not a warrior - but still consistent with all the things I like covering. We never got a changeling boy to explore (they're almost as bad as Unicorn colts), so... when in doubt, make your own, I guess.

Glad you liked the story. Didn't catch on quite as much as expected, and ended up flawed in places, but it's progress compared to previous attempts.

That’s why it was a secret for so long.” He shrugged. “Does that change anything?”

"Would... would it matter if I-"

"Careful Scoots, we changelings have a long history of starting long hypothetical debates."

"Huh?... OH! no I wasn't doing the 'If-I-was-a-pony' thing, everyling already knows the answer to that one"

"Cocooned as soon as we stepped into the hive?"

"As if they could manage to copy our leg holes, I don't miss them, but they were a total giveaway considering no two 'lings had the same gaps"
