Doctor Disco

Fear makes strangers of us all.

E

Starlight is stuck between a rock and a hard place, wondering whether love is worth the risk.

After all, she isn't sure if Maud would let her anywhere near Boulder.

Because contests, that's why.

The prompt? OBSCURE SHIPPING

Also, because this idea I had was just ridiculously amazing to me. Also also, don't take this story as anything I would purposefully write, I literally had to push these words out of the recesses of my mind. Cheers!

Glimber sounds better! :rainbowlaugh:

Now, at first when I walked into this, seeing that it wasn't a comedy, I was a bit perplexed. I mean...a pairing with a pet rock? How could such a thing be taken the least bit seriously?

Well...I dunno why, but it worked out pretty well. Although I do think this should have a Comedy tag, I also see something genuine between the two. I liked that Starlight was in a situation where nopony could really question her sanity or make this seem like borderline zaniness on her part. Actually, I would see someone like Starlight having the low rationality to fall for a literal rock. Yet Boulder himself seems to be displayed in such a way that makes him alive but not alive as well if that makes any sense.

However, I couldn't help but feel that this does paint her as...a bit of a nutcase? I dunno, I couldn't really look passed that bit, as sweet as this story was. I probably won't ever read a fic like this again, but I'm glad that I gave it a try to say the least.

Congrats, you managed to find a ship that confuses even me even at this point.

...

Eh, still a better love story than Twilight. Best of luck in the judging.

I... don't know how to feel about this one really.

Pros: Good hook, which is hugely important in a short story, along with knowing exactly what the story was going to be about. I'm becoming a Starlight fan more and more, and while there was a good bit of ham in this story, it still felt pretty in character for her.

Maud rocked, 'nuff said.

A few puns here and there, of which I always approve. Also, while this story isn't tagged as such, there is a very obscurest comedy feel throughout. Your prose was rather solid as well, with all the conversations believable and natural.

Cons: The exact feel of this story was hard to pin down. Between the unique flavor of comedy to the sort of suspense of Starlight rock-napping boulder to the cute, though awkward romance, I just couldn't pin down the rocky road on this crazy ice cream story. Apart from that, there was a handful of errors that made it through editing, but nothing too major.

The final thing was that I couldn't really figure out why this story was written. Did you want to tell a silly romance? If so, I thought the comedy would have been more pronounced. Why was Starlight so infatuated with Boulder? It just seemed so strange to me, and while it didn't detract that much, it was still an odd setup.

To summarize: A silly story that doesn't take itself for granite. Starlight and Boulder rock as a couple, even though I gravel a little at the lack of a firm narrative direction. Regardless, I laughed and smiled at this igneous story and would recommend it to a friend that needs some cheering up.

This was some silly shipping fun
