Tarnish´s observations are disturbing indeed, specially since that perspective "it´s ok if it is not from a pony" is still present in pony society (just ask poor Boomer).
Hasn´t Celestia edicted laws regarding the rights of non-equine races in Equestria?
VINYL AND OCTAVIA!

Maybe, but we see this in the show. Check out the background of Zecora's hut sometime. Or some of the stuff mentioned about spells and what it takes to cast them. There is some pretty grim fridge horror lurking in the background. Alchemy involves ingredients.
7431084 I recall reading School Daze, a fic following Cheerilee and her new job teaching a far rougher group of students than at Ponyville. I am reminded of that story because one of the characters had a genuine leather jacket. In that universe, the only legal way to obtain leather in Equestria is for a bovid to grant the use of their body to someone or somepony in their will for such a purpose. Sorta like our organ donor program. I imagine that many of those ingredients which don't require the death of the subject can be sold at a lucrative price. Minotaur horn, for example, might be sold in powdered form (from sharpening) or if the minotaur is particularly in need of money, having it removed entirely to allow it to regrow.
Depending on if it's cheaper to make a regeneration spell than whatever the ingredient is worth, it might actually be a (rather grotesque) way of making a living. Selling your own bits and bobs and doodads, chugging a potion, recovering, and doing it again now and again.

I'm thinking there is a reason why Applejack keeps pigs and cows. Also, cheesemaking. And Pinkie Pie talking about eating hotdogs. We don't even need fanfiction to be creeped out by the fridge horror.
7431145 ... Depends on the lifespan of the farm animals I think. I mean, we humans partake fondly of alcohol, and much of the alcohol we prefer takes several years of preparation before it's ready to be consumed. It is perfectly reasonable that at some point, they entered into an accord in that they would care for a shorter-lived species, in exchange for, well, eating them, after they pass on. It's a bit scary to think about but there's no reason one need be uncivilized about it. Particularly since ponies don't need to eat them.

So... Applejack feeds a pig nothing but alcohol, causing it to die young, with a delicious fatty liver for pâté...
I knew as soon as I came in this was going to be about butts. I knew it.
Now write a chapter in PTS with the same chapter title, but about lemons or sour pickles.

- Puckered plots evolved to keep curious tentacles out.
7431157 ... Well she had to get that name somehow.

7431145 think those are examples of cotninuity errors more than anything XP.
Also very hard to imagine anyone being able to figure out that dragon livers can be used for anything. Caues the means of getting said livers would probably cost a lot more than just the dragon's life.

My first thought when Tarnish was talking about this was 'What must non-pony alchemy/magic books be like?' Unicorn horn, hair, and blood are common magical ingredients in other fiction, and pegasus feathers are already used in at least one potion recipe in the show itself...

Number one selling book among dragons, written by Spike the Dragon: How to Serve Pony.
7431388
Implying the title is a bait-and-switch or Spike becomes very disgruntled in his later years...

Rainbow Dash had her wings cut off and stolen by unicorns wanting to become alicorns. For realsies.

...I really need to get caught up on the comics. They've apparently gone hardcore...
...No seriously, the story summary on the wiki page alone opens up a ton of fridge horror.
Octavia and Vinal Scratch? Trying to remeber... need more caffeine.
7431410 I... what!
How in the holy heck is THAT discription in any way, shape, or form in a comic designed for kids to read!!!
Side note how the bleep dose alicorn twilight keep getting overwhelmed??
Tarnish needs to develop an important alchemical spell that requires vital parts from ghastlies, sell the rights to the Flimflam brothers, and then set up a viewing area for tourists to watch the fun, with a popcorn concession.
A little odd to see Octavia and Vinyl out here... But, then again, they are Society members.
7431410 Criminitly. That's... A thing now? I mean, that has to be riffing on the infamous fanfic. Still, that's pretty chilling: I don't think any of the Mane Six would be hit harder by something like that than Rainbow Dash. Yikes.
7431486
Apparently Barbara Randall, like others mlp writters. didn't stop to consider the real life unfortunate implications (love specially the part where Twilight leaves the culprits go with nothing but a minor punishment) . .
I think I know where this is going.
Never mind then.
Hahahaha XD That image though.

I want to believe Ponies are so innocent and cute and shit... but then I read things like this and I'm like.
You don't fuck with hardcore Ponies
Awesome chapter man, awesome chapter.
Octi and Vynal be joining us? This is how they become Godparents isn't it.

The pigs could be held mainly for bristle recovery, for brushes and such. The quality is better if they are collected from living animals.
But, on the other hand, Applejack does not have money to waste, so after their - I hope - natural death, they may be used further..?
On that sandwich, that could be tofu or something similar. Same with the hot dog sausage. Nowadays, you have a lot of vegetarian products for us humans made to look like the real thing.
On the other hand, that often seems to be a grasp at social normality, to not differ from the "normal" meat eaters on the surface and still be a vegetarian. Why would ponies need to do something like this? The dragon ponies might be a reason..?
That description reminded me of when I had to pop puss-filled blisters the size of softballs on the pigs when I worked on the pigfarm.
Oh great...Hentai...
Before reading:
I assume this chapter is going to be about lemons...
After reading:
Nope... completely wrong...
So, like this?
