Well, there are a handful of options once Josh has supplies. Better armor, better weapons, he could probably build a gravity hammer, and then comes teaching them how to use squad tactics to disable and sabotage enemies. Also, possible Halo displaced trope of the planet being a Forerunner world of some sort.

Huh... So Starlight went military after her bout of insanity. You know, there actually is a bit of method to the madness of Dainn. Sort of like a child being told they are perfect every day and forcing the world to reflect that, until they are teenagers, then informing them the only use for the fairer sex is just sex. There is one enemy of ponies that Sharp can't/hasn't accounted for, and Discord is literally random chance given a body. He hasn't accounted for the scheming manavore Tirek because he is focusing on magical artifacts. Drain them of power, and all they are good for is paperweights.
