I'm sorry you find it to be poorly written. I admit, I could have done better. But I'm not entirely sure what you mean by a controversial topic. If it's the gay marriage, well thats being accepted in a lot of places so it will soon cease to be a controversial topic.

Awww, that was really cute.
Your grammar and formatting needs work, but nothing too terrible. Watch the spacing, dialogue punctuation, etc. Also, when you have a character's internal thoughts (such as Big Mac's), either italicize them or add "he thought," etc., like the character was speaking.
My stepfather proposed to my mother on Christmas, so I think using Hearth's Warming Eve was fine.
Ignore the downvotes. I can gaurantee that no more than two to three of them are because of how the story was written. This site is full of people who hate M/M while gobbling up F/F... it sickens me, the hypocrisy.
(To be fair, there are people who hate any same-sex ship on here as well, and I find them equally worthy of a facehoof. 
) Work on your grammar and writing style in the future and you'll do just fine. 
And to the guy who said this is an "abomination," I suppose you'll have to pass over any Dark or AU fic, as well as any fic where a character dies, a non-canon ship is shown, etc.
