But sometimes memories lurk in the oddest of places, and when they strike not even a god can resist their gravity.

A short story written for the recent Writeoff competition.

Halloween story time, oh my! Was browsing around the site, and stumbled upon one of those 'insert human into [villain's name here]'s body and have them do stuff.' For some reason I had been thinking about Halloween / Nightmare Night, and the following came to life. Conceptualized and written in a day.

Ethan frequently experiences the phenomenon commonly referred to as lucid dreaming. He finds himself within said dreams, living out things that one could only think of. On the night before Halloween, he falls asleep to dream of a colorful place, a bright place, one filled with ponies and decorated for a special night. Nightmare Night. He's going to have the time of his life.

Note - Marked Complete, and the sequel explores the concept, not the same character.

Nightmare Moon was not one to sit about and wait in hopes that she might sometime escape. She would bring about her freedom with her own two hooves!

All she needed was power. Enough to fill the stars and drag them from the skies.

For an alicorn in chains, that was magic she just didn't have. But she could take it; it was only a subject's duty to give of themselves for their Princess's sake, was it not? Still, that would take time, centuries even, and with such thorough bindings she would be unable to take more than scraps from from common peasants.

No, she would need somepony... special. Somepony attuned to the stars themselves.

And if no such pony could be found, then she would make one.

What happens in one alternate realm when instead of marrying a unicorn, Twilight's mother had instead married an earth pony, resulting in her daughter being hornless? Without her magic, Twilight's future and destiny are far less certain, as is the destiny of all of Equestria.

After a number of years, Nightmare Moon has returned and was able to make her own body, instead of finding a host. However, the process cost her most of her power, and she knew that, if she were to get it back before being discovered, she needed to get herself a familiar.

However, things don't go quite as planned, as the ritual end up costing her wings, and she gets quite a willful familiar. Over the next few days, she is forced to admit that her ultimate wish is that ponies liked her night, and through that her, by forcing them to experience it. With this relevation, she is faced with a new goal of getting the ponies to like her, which will be a even harder task.

Luckily (or perhaps unluckily) her familiar is there to help, with his intimidating visage, abrasive personality, and willingness to brutalize anyone needed.

Twilight expected Shooting Star to just accept everything she was told. She didn't. Now Twilight is making the ultimate decision. She's going to tell Shooting Star the real story of Nightmare Moon.

There is no atmosphere, there is no heat, there is no love, there is no sanctuary, there is no harmony.

There is only the moon.

This could be considered a companion piece to Catharsis and canonical to it (and most of my stories), but is in itself a standalone.
