Stopping for what he hoped to be a short rest under a willow tree, he finds himself in a peculiar situation. Staring at events that long seem past, he's faced with one question:

Can he do anything to change this? For her sake, he has to try.

After Spike's destructive rampage in Ponyville, Rhumbline, Airship captain formally in the employ of the royal household has been recalled to service. His task, to voyage far beyond the borders of Equestria to the place of Spike's origin, to help the dragon find a way to control his hoarding instincts.

Meanwhile, the voyage forces the crew and passengers to reflect on their lives and their pasts, and come to terms with the ties that bind them together.

Not the most original idea in existence, but hey, this is my take on how it would play out.

Usually when you are killed, you die. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. Usually those exceptions don't end up in a world full of colorful talking ponies with 3 other people from random points of Earth's history, but hey, I can't complain too much. Now if we can just figure out what happened, how we ended up in Equestria, and who is responsible for this mix up...
