Deep in the Everfree Forest, something has awakened. Something ancient. Something monstrous. Something hungry. What could this mysterious figure be who walks among the trees on legs far longer than any other pony? Where did it come from? And what does it want with Twilight Sparkle?

Apple Bloom's parents died years ago in an accident, when she was only a baby. That's what Applejack and Big Macintosh have always told her, and even though they must have suffered a great deal they still managed to raise her properly and give her all the love her parents couldn't.

But her brother and sister have been hiding a secret, through shame, ever since their parents' deaths, and now the time has finally come to tell Apple Bloom who she really is. But how will the youngest Apple react to what really happened? Can their family bonds survive the truth?

After being driven out of Ponyville following the incident with the Ursa, The Great and Powerful Trixie flees into the Everfree forest, where she meets a mysterious masked stallion named Herald. Herald offers Trixie a chance to learn ancient magic that will truly make her the most powerful unicorn in Equestria, by offering her a book that not even Twilight Sparkle has ever read. But there is a reason Twilight's never read this book, and there is more to Herald than there appears...

Her first task is to train with a master Changeling hunter named Zecora. However, Zecora herself goes missing shortly before Twilight's arrival in Ponyville, leading to a chase that takes her deep into an underground ruin of the Everfree Forest. There, she interrupts the attempts of a previously unseen type of pony to resurrect one of their ancient kindred from a heavily sealed sarcophagus. History is quickly unravelling, with the young Twilight at the centre of an oncoming darkness.
