Somber

T

(This is an old story I wrote three years ago during season 1)

Twilight Sparkle's birthday has come around, and Rainbow Dash is unimpressed with Rarity's present. When Applejack pokes a bit of fun with her friend, Rarity becomes unusually upset. Twilight Sparkle investigates her friend's feeling, learning something she never expected about her friend and why she is truly suited to be the element of Generosity.

Did it work?

Poop. There's problems. How do I get rid of the bolds and make the entries right?

I remember this one. I liked it.

Somber... I love you SO MUCH for finally adding this to FiMfic! This is, literally, my number one fave. fic. I... words cannot even. I mean, this is the single story that made me go from hating Rarity's guts, to her becoming Best Pony. And no matter what she does in canon, she will ALWAYS be best pony in my mind, all due to this single story.

THAT is how much it moved me the first time I read it all those years ago.

I've been learning the formatting. Slow but steady. I want to make sure I know it for when I start submitting Horizons.

Also, thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoy the story. Even after three years it gets to me. :raritycry:

Still as good as the first time I read it on fanfiction.net

One of the first stories that really sold me on fan fiction. I can't stress how glad I am to see this here. I will cry whenever I reread this one, every time.

Tears were shed as I read this. In the future i should probably pay more attention to tags cause i didn't read them when i opened this story so I assumed it wasn't a sad story. Good job making me cry a little though. Thats how you know you story does its job as a sadfic.

I love this story. Its so well written. Its a good background story. And there are no real plot holes. Everything seems to be covered. I love it!

Oh? I remember this.

I remember this story. Which means that it's a damn good story if I still remember a fan fic after a couple of years.

One of the best storys I have seen on any site.

Oh wow. I have been lurking on this site forever and finally officially joined just so I could leave a comment. I cried while reading this - it was so good and so sad. I like that it managed to fit within what we've seen in canon for the most part even though it was written in the first season (I can pretend the parents we see in Sisterhooves Social are Sweetie's mom and stepfather) even though Hasbro would NEVER let them be this depressing. But it was depressing in a good way that makes me want to go buy some blankets for the homeless shelter.

Oldie goodie~

I love this story.

I remember this story. It was one of the first I read.

Yes! Oh God, YES! :raritystarry:

The first MLP story that really got to me... and most likely one of those that got me into writing my own in the first place. I'm so glad to see it here. :yay: :pinkiehappy:

How did this get featured so quickly, though?

Impressive, man.

I like it a lot.

~Skeeter The Lurker

It's so touching!:raritycry::raritydespair::raritystarry::raritywink::unsuresweetie:

fuck, this still gets me.
not sure whether you should add "alternate universe" to the tags though, since the "canonity" of this story has long since been debunked.

Ah crap, this thing made me cry last time.

Holy this one? Hot damn, I liked this one since I first read it.

Hey, this again! This was one of the stories that inspired me to get back into fanfiction. Great to see it popping up here.

This is not the saddest thing I've ever read, but it sure comes close. Excellent story telling, you did a very good job tugging at the heartstrings there. Im gonna go hug my daughter now. :applecry::fluttercry::pinkiesad2:

Heh. This was the first fim fic I ever read. A very good one that is.

I remember this. Strange to see it returning, but it's not something I regret re-reading.

Beautiful story, really liked it. :raritydespair::raritycry:

Two things that irked me a little though. Rarity has shown in the show that she is embarrassed as to her parents fashion sense, so it doesn't really make sense that her adopted mother would be a seamstress. Also, Rarity has a gem finding ability, but she still managed to become poor? :rainbowhuh:

Anyway, they're pretty trivial. Over all it was a lovely little oneshot.

This deserves to be more well known

OH MY GOD IT'S HERE! :pinkiegasp:

I simply LOVED this story. After going through it all, I found myself tearing up. That's what I expect from sad stories, especially if they have the tragedy tag as well. Not only did you present a well-built past for Rarity, but the entirety of the story was able to show a series of events that made her so generous. I look forward to more stories of this calibre, possibly for the others of the Mane 6?

4687741 As to her gem-finding magic, I believe that didn't actually manifest itself until shortly before she got her cutie mark, as was shown in Cutie Mark Chronicles.

I love this story. I loved when I first read and I still love it now.

The mark of a truly gifted writer is not how much emotion they can stuff onto a page, but how much they can evoke with a word.

Heh! I'd say it's one of the most well known stories in the fandom! :raritywink:

Whoa...that is simply powerful. I love it. :pinkiesad2:

This story predates Rarity's parents appearing in canon. It's been completely jossed since its writing.

Still, great to see it on here. I'll still read Thanquol's The Old Stories from time to time, and it's nice to see another great story from the same era.

Oooh. I remember this story well, and it has retained its power and poignancy to this day. Poor Rarity! :raritydespair:

This looks damn interesting. I wish I knew of the story before today, though. I always miss out on these kinds of things. On to reading!

This choked me up quite a bit. I was really hoping Unique turned out to be a renamed Sweetie Belle, but you pretty much punched me in the gut instead.:fluttercry: Also, while I get that AJ and RD are ignorant of Rarity's history, I literally felt like beating the both of them with a sack of potatoes after reading this. Well written, but I gotta stop reading fics with the Tragedy tag on 'em.

Oh god, this one. What a well written punch to the gut.

Favorited and thumbs up, but I'm not sure I can reread it out of not having time today for a crying session.

Well this just kicked my heart right in the balls.

Yepp.
Still as good, simply beautiful.

... damn :fluttercry:

Fimfic has a trend of old famous tales appearing on here years after their heyday. Most, sadly, do not quite hold up to the rosy tint of one's memories - they tarnish with age and with exposure to stronger writing.

This is an exception; it remains as well-done as day one, for while it may have a few flaws in its sentence structure or word choice, it remains as much a gem as the day it was published.

Bravo.

Wow! I'd never heard of this story before now, but I wish I had. It's a fantastic look at the past of a complex character and what could make her into who she is, and those are the kinds of stories I love.

This is still my favorite Rarity. It captures the feel of her perfectly and the history you've given us would fit seamlessly into the show. 100,000 word stories focused on her have been written without painting such a clear picture of her, and without evoking such intense emotion.

I am so glad to see this here, and doubly glad to have found a reason to read it again.

Wow. I feel... touched. I literally can not describe the extent to which this story moved me. All I can say is, well done.

This is easily one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read.

The ones that tug at my heartstrings and bring me to tears are always amazing.
