Celestia was perfectly content with that. But when Twilight Sparkle suddenly appears at the palace in Canterlot, after a century of silence, she has no choice but to talk to her.

Starlight Glimmer has a secret. She's been traveling to an alternate timeline for years now, using the utter desolation and apocalyptic emptiness to get a bit of alone time. It's a constant reminder of her past failings and a way to help keep herself on the straight and narrow.

Sunset Shimmer doesn't know who George Washington is; not a big deal, right? Turns out if you want to pass American History, it's actually a big deal. Turns out a lot of things are, and suddenly, Sunset Shimmer is failing out of most of her classes.

Add that to a very personal issue that has suddenly become a crisis, and it feels like everything in her life is crashing down around her. What can she do? Go hide in her bed - until her other self from this universe demands entry to her apartment, that is. But is she safe to reveal her biggest secret to her other self? Will it change their friendship - or prevent it from becoming something more?

Brief author's notes:
This story contains transgender themes alongside traditional high school drama, and there are very brief moments of un-affirming self-doubt. This is quickly corrected.

When the girls discovered magic at Camp Everfree, Sunset Shimmer was the first to embrace it. But now, the little bit of magic she got is just reminding her of how much she's lost. And as people get more and more desperate, you can never tell when they're going to do something incredibly stupid.

Not everyone has the steel in their spine to be the weapon of purpose that Sunset is. She knows what her surrogate mother needs from her, and what is asked of her, and all her life she has accepted that she would always be the sum of that purpose: the steel and strength of the Solar Princess.

Now, things have changed, and the weapon wants more than a sheathe. She wants more than to be swung in battle against those who would make brittle the rule of law and the power of the throne. Sunset knows how to swing both blade and magic, but swinging human is something completely different.
