Starlight Glimmer has a secret. She's been traveling to an alternate timeline for years now, using the utter desolation and apocalyptic emptiness to get a bit of alone time. It's a constant reminder of her past failings and a way to help keep herself on the straight and narrow.

She can't let herself falter anymore.

"Have you seen Twilight? She mentioned a portal in your bedroom, said she couldn't find you anywhere! She was in a panic. We told her to calm down, but she went through it looking for you, and now it's gone!"

"... F:flutterrage:k!!!

Oh wow, I did not expect the ending. I was so ready for her to lose the anchor, or to find another Trixie so the anchor didn't work, or for her to trip and fall and chip her horn, or some other thing like that. Her silence about her travels was certainly gonna spell doom for herself but that end; that end is fucking great. Not for herself, but for her friend. And it was her negligence and obsession with herself and her own magic that caused it again in the end. Brilliant. I love it.

Dang, love that bombshell you dropped at the very end. I suppose this calls for a guilt-upon-guilt-ridden rescue mission?
(Unless I'm misunderstanding some earlier detail and Twilight just got completely obliterated the moment the portal closed. :P)

My ramblings aside, kudos!

Thank you very much!

It's meant to be left somewhat vague. An open ending of sorts.

... Well that is going to stick with me for a while. Nice use of classical horror.

Glad you liked! Thank you kindly!

Well damn. I love the vague interpretation of what’s going to happen, but knowing Twilight, she’d figure a way out. Still, it’s not hard to believe Starlight would punish herself for this potential outcome, seeing as it took her forever to forgive herself for what happened at the village.

Oh no... Twilight aside, this will destroy Starlight from sheer guilt ><

The wind that seemed to never die away blew dust through her mane, stinging her eyes and blackening her coat. It held the reek of fires long past, of charred wood and smoldering stone. It held the smell of death. She rubbed at an eye, wiping away a sooty tear. It wasn't just from the stinging dust. She always cried when coming here. The pain was part of the appeal.

oof! i really can see her self-punishing like this. poor Starlight!

One of Trixie's spare capes served as her anchor, but it also provided a sense of comfort in her travels through this dead place. It was the only bit of warmth and security she granted herself here, the only reminder she had of what she could've unknowingly erased if she hadn't changed her ways when she had.

aww! Trixie is so important to her

She didn't like to be smug about her magical abilities. Not anymore. She'd come a long way since the days of her negligent arrogance, and she never intended to go back.

and augh. she has so much magical power and all the reasons to never feel happy about it

"Have you seen Twilight? She mentioned a portal in your bedroom, said she couldn't find you anywhere! She was in a panic. We told her to calm down, but she went through it looking for you, and now it's gone!"

oh noooooo! augh! there is nothing at all that could have possibly been worse for Starlight in this moment. absolutely fantastic ending here, wow.

love the feeling of dread for Starlight welling up inside me, thank you for writing!

Echoes of the Tantabus, including the part where the Mane Six confront the reformed villain on her unhealthy coping mechanism… albeit with some added complications. It almost shades into horror, though I find myself confident that this will be resolved without too much fuss, and possibly a friendship lesson. Great work throughout. Thank you for it.

Hey, thank you so much for the feedback. This made my night to read. Sorry it took me so long to reply. Took a bit of a break from writing. Thank you again. ♥

Thank you! I'm debating on a followup, but I've not got a solid idea yet. This one just came to me in a flash and I hammered it out in one sitting. Not trying to brag or anything, just saying that it was a bolt of inspiration brought on by a singular thought. I'll see about a sequel sometime if the pieces in my head eventually settle into something coherent.

Honestly I don't get the big deal, head back through and just find her. It can't be THAT hard to make a massive flare or beacon for her to follow, then just bring her back.
