The Wonderbolts are many things. They're defenders; athletes; weatherponies; role models. But one thing they don't typically do is interact with the breezies. Even though the pegasi and the breezies have had a long-standing symbiotic relationship since the founding of Equestria, entomology simply isn't in a Wonderbolt's job description.

So you can imagine Lightning Dust's annoyance when she's signed up for a voluntary expedition to the breezies' home in the far east in order to collect their nectar. You can also imagine her surprise when she discovers that she's not only working alongside a cadet from the Academy, but also an actual Wonderbolt. Seeing this as her opportunity to get back in the Wonderbolts' good graces, Lightning decides to make the best of the situation and impress Fleetfoot with her skills. After all, gathering nectar from a bunch of bugs (read: fairies) should be a cinch for a future Wonderbolt.

When Spitfire starts looking back on her history as a leader she realizes how many bad decisions she made. As she prepares to resign from the Wonderbolts Celestia assigns her to a therapy session with Dr Wolf.

I don't own Dr Wolf.

Rainbow Dash thought her troubles were over once she came to terms with Tank needing to hibernate. Then she got a letter telling her to report to the Wonderbolt Academy ASAP. It turns out there was an incident at the Weather Factory, and Spitfire wants answers. While Rainbow is ready to come clean, she's deathly afraid of what will happen next.

Equestria is rather notorious for its historical illiteracy. A thousand years guarantees anypony who wasn't there to witness the event won't remember it. Even the passage of a few generations runs the risk of events falling by the wayside.

But some things ponies remember, even if they don't always retain the reasons why they hold onto those memories. Twilight Sparkle just found one, and now she's going to try to find the reasoning behind it.

It's worse than she could ever imagine. On so many levels, it is so much worse.

Inspired by "Corn & Peg," a Nick Jr. cartoon that G4 very well could have been in a much darker timeline. Set in very early Season 8, during the School of Friendship's construction, and assumes that "Spring Breakdown" took place during that time. Blame/thank Estee for this story's existence. Feeling introspective and adrift after the ordeal at Rainbow Falls, the last thing Spitfire wanted to think about was having to fly all the way back to Cloudsdale, let alone do so with Soarin, Fleetfoot and an uncomfortable atmosphere. So she took the train instead, where she ended up talking to a pegasus from the Ponyville team. Turns out they have rather different outlooks on life.

This is not an accusation story, and it was not written for the purpose of humbling Spitfire. Quite the opposite – this is about forgiving her.

If you like, this can be a standalone story, or it can be a prequel scene for Haunted Wasteland, of which King Of The Stingers is another, though with a completely different cast and situation to this one.
