Commissions are a little hard to think about. I’ve had both good and bad experiences, and the experiences of writing something someone else wants is very different than writing something for yourself. Some stories that I enjoyed writing may still have felt like a drag. For the most part, The Final Choices did not feel like I drag. I thought, at first, that it might have been too tragic… but you know what? I think it works like this. Let’s reverse the standard tragedy formula. Begin with the worst of the worst and end… with the best.

Many years later…

“Mana fount cohesion is optimal!” Queen Aegis shouted. “Everything’s lining up!”

“Lock the final sequence!” Queen Twilight ordered.

Sunset obliged, taking hold of the crystal lever with her hand and pulling down.

The entirety of the Roots pulsed with bright blue energy, lighting up a spider’s web of crystal structures in the night sky of the other half of the sphere. The Roots had spread far and wide to connect as many mana founts together as possible. It had taken many years and a lot of hard work, but they finally had enough. An entire continent of mana founts… channeled into this single point.

The energy coalesced into a shimmering ball of white power, equidistant between Aegis and Twilight. Twilight lit her horn and Aegis pointed her black wand at the object. They both shunted their magic into it, using the differential between their spells to rip reality apart.

A hole tore through the air, revealing a circular window to a classroom. Inside, there was a fully-grown human Fluttershy lecturing high school students on biology. “Now, can anyone tell me what this stage of cell division is called?”

“FLUTTERSHY!” Sunset shouted, running through the portal.

“Ye- SUNSET!?” Fluttershy dropped her chalk instantly and pulled Sunset into a desperate hug. “T-Twilight said everything was gone…”

“It was. But… but I made it out.” She put her hands on Fluttershy’s shoulders, tears falling down her face. “And now I’ve made it back.”

“I’ll go tell the girls!”

“I’m coming with you!” Sunset turned to the portal. “Open it again in an hour, use the radio spell.”

Twilight and Aegis nodded.

“And Aegis…? Thank you.”

Aegis smiled sadly. “You’re welcome, Sunset Shimmer.” She pointed her wand at the portal and it closed with a pop, leaving Sunset to reunite with her long lost friends…

As I recall, the original disaster was a cessation of time, yes? Everything and everyone trapped in amber. That of course would suggest that they're still there, for some value of existence. Might it be possible to extricate them, carefully, like fossilized bones from limestone? I could imagine a sort of quarrying effort, using magic to dig one's way through stone-hard not-time.

Excellent anti-tragedy. Thank you for one heck of a strange and engaging journey.

The failure of time caused reality to collapse in an absolute sense, so no, unfortunately, that's not viable.

Ah, that's a bummer then.

9751524 Feh, a society constructed in such a manner is one that was bound to destroy itself eventually, to the detriment of all.

Best take preemptive action.

And then put me in charge. Nothing could possibly go wrong then! :trollestia:

9755780 Bah! You just refill the time tank after stealing all the Time Oil from the Timeranians!

Clearly, you're inexperienced with Madness Magic!

:trollestia:

9755794

Aye, but there's a difference between controlled demolition, and just smacking an alicorn-shaped disaster into it. I'm not against the use of high explosives, I just want them to be used with a bit of foresight.

9755838 When in doubt, just use more explosives. :pinkiecrazy:

9755848

We already threw a stable hydrogen fusion reaction at the problem, that's about as big as the explosives get before becoming, unwieldy.

Amusing credits are amusing. A nice little stinger after the credits (what is this the MCU:twilightsmile: )
Twilight with direct access to that many Mana Founts... she was powerful with just one.
Sunset with her horn (and magic) in the human world what could possibly happen because of that...

Thank you very much for writing this, a am happy it was not too much of a drag.

9755858 ANTIMATTER!!

Or even better... WORMHOLE WEAPONS!! But those are more like 'implosions', so they don't really count.

9756336

No no, I think you're on to something, we just need to destabilize a white hole and there'll be a detonation like nobody's business.

9756352 They seem pretty destructive as-is...

If ya don't shut it off in time, kiss yer galaxy goodbye.

9756357

Well you wanted an explosion, one end eats a universe, the other end plows all of that debris into another. It's like a shotgun! Only, bigger.

I'm glad everything went well. Also, that I stuck up long enough to read that ending. :D
For a commission, I'm pretty impressed. :twilightsheepish:

This is a great story.
It interesting to see the ponies thrust into an unexpected tragedy to trying to rebuild themselves in a new world.

I felt bad for our main ponies (and dragon), being forced to save what little they could of their world, thrust with new powers, and trying to rebuild and eventually deal with the new inhabitants without losing their marbles from the whole experience. Or in Spike's case trying do deal with the fact that he and Smolder are the last dragons alive, and all that implies.

Your adventure stories, or at least the ones I have read so far, are pretty well done.

Wow. Truly an awesome tale. This is one of those ficus you desperately wished had more. More to read, more to indulge in! A great ride that ended too soon... Well merry wishes to your future writing career. Onwards! To glory!
