I have one tip though. Try to make the first Chapter as good as you can even make it. The first part is the most important in an Story, believe me, I lost many possible readers when the first chapter of my Story was really bad.

Believe it or not, chapter 0 went through six re do's, not just editing but also erasing the whole chapter several times to make it even slightly look good.. it took two weeks, I also only started writing this because I really want more gamer fics and then imagined that there may be people like me, waiting for a new gamer fic to come out... but no one came, so i guessed i'll try making something others could enjoy and not just myself!
Oh and sorry to hear about your story's first chapter, it probably happened to mine too :).
