I just hope the story Rarity told was BS, we've all seen that she grew up in Ponyville, and she adores Canterlot as a city. From what we've seen from that one scene of Rarity's parents they didn't seem like the business leader type, but that can also have been vecation spirit kicking in so I won't diss that point.
Giving changes to things that happens in the cannon after your story begins, changing this this much from way before the story starts, I'm not a big fan, but we'll see how it playes out
