Stygian hasn't been feeling himself lately. Perhaps it's the thousand-year leap in time. Perhaps it's the forceful reformation courtesy of the elements of harmony. Perhaps it's the strange dreams keeping him up at night.

When he finds an unlikely reminder of his old life in Twilight's pet owl, he hopes perhaps all the strangeness will come to an end. But when tragedy strikes at the heart of the Ponyville pet scene and the creatures in his dreams take familiar forms, Stygian will be forced to answer a dangerous question.

How far would you go to help a friend?

This story is a sequel to So You Escaped From Limbo

Star Swirl, Stygian, and Rockhoof say goodbye to one of their oldest friends.

Of course, they also have a few things to say to each other.

A follow-up to "The Beginning of the End."

Note: The prequel is not required reading for this story.

It was incredibly rare to find a pony so pathetic and deprived of love and affection that they’d turn to somepony like him for comfort. Love, Stygian realised, and everypony’s selfish desire for it, had bestowed him with a sense of normalcy.

Note: In this story, a little bit of darkness is still in Stygian, becoming some sort of a negative second personality that influences him.

Stygian sits beneath a tree, surrounded by discarded drafts of a love poem.

Mistmane wanders through the garden, reflecting on the days when she was the beautiful mare in the world.

A little nudge from a couple of their friends might be enough to bring them together.

This is a story that I've been tinkering with for a long time, but it was only earlier this week that I finally managed to sketch it out into a proper story. Romance isn't my forte, but I hope that you enjoy it nonetheless!
