Although the number of new tags increased in 2018, last year also saw only two graduates: Tempest Shadow - graduated January-February - and Spike (EqG) - graduated March-April. 2017 saw 21 graduates, by comparison, a full list of which can be found here.
The number of contributed stories fell as well compared to 2017 (41 additions in 2018, compared with 95 in 2017), though that's to be expected, as the group was founded during that earlier year and so received most of its attention then. No worries. That gives us a standard to equal or surpass this year.
I'll continue to keep track of all character tags by story count. The list has been divided logarithmically (i.e. starts with tens of thousands, then progresses to thousands, then to hundreds, then to tens, etc.). I find it generally helpful to get an overview of the tags for comparison and just in case I spot anything of interest.
PLEASE NOTE: The counts aren't always exact. There have been cases where the actual count is one story greater than what the directory records. However, since the discrepancy is so minor, I figure it's simply easier (for now) to post this caveat and let people check individual accounts for themselves.

Update's a little later than I was intending... Fortunately, this also coincided with three graduations and an octet of new tags being added, so this month's report should at least be slightly more interesting than usual. That out of the way, here we go:
Hi all! With Impossible Numbers recently announcing his intention to retire from FimFiction, I offered to help take over maintaining these counts. I'd like to find some other ways to pep the group up as well, especially now that the show's ending and we will soon have a final list of characters to try to get to 100 stories each.
For now though, let's get to the Impossible numbers:
Happy November, everypony! The show might be over but the ride never ends!!!
Apologies for the late update here. I've been cooking up some automation to help me prepare these more easily, and my code-fu is a bit more rusty than I'd prefer to admit. I'll get there soon enough, though!
Anyway: this month I'm excited to announce not one, not two, but three new graduates: Mane-iac, Dean Cadance, and Ocellus! Congratulations, guys, and welcome to the club!
Hello again, friends. I'm pleased to say that I'm a bit more on the ball this month. Still doing a lot of this by hand, but I've got my rubric worked out a little more solidly.
I regret to inform you that there are neither graduates nor new tags this month, but we shall see what the new year brings!

To start us off, I've replicated the December-January count from last year, so that we have an idea of our starting point before the months begin in earnest.

Anything I can do to help with the automation? I've written a few scrapers for Fimfiction before.
