After hearing about the adventures of her former student, Princess Celestia invites Sunset Shimmer back to Equestria for a reunion. However, Sunset is less than ecstatic about the news, and turns down the offer every time. Her friends don't understand, and Sunset isn't willing to explain why.

Everybody agrees that Sunset Shimmer is the best Smirker in Canterlot High. Well, almost everybody. There are some people who think they smirk better, and are willing to challenge her during the Smirking Contest. They are definitely not prepared to handle Sunset and her smirk.

After 3 years together, Flash Sentry finally decides to break up with Sunset Shimmer. She's changed from that cute, friendly angel who captured his heart back in middle school, to a mean, spoiled, nasty monster. But how will the much feared school bully react to losing the one person who's important to her?

Sonata returns to the stage after her gem is broken, and Sunset is reminded of her own experience with forgiveness from her new Canterlot High friends. Sunset tries to reach out, but Sonata's rejection only brings back memories of her transformation. Her memories keep her following Sonata, and sharing her experience brings them closer than ever.

When Sonata Dusk is found murdered in a backalley, the other sirens find themselves alone and friendless, except for perhaps one person. Sunset Shimmer, attempting to befriend them at school, feels for their loss, and tries to console them. Meanwhile, a murderer with an apparent grudge against the Dazzlings is still on the loose.

Aria Blaze has started to go back to a normal life after the Battle of Band incident. Her life in Equestria was erased for a while until Sonata watched Frozen for the tenth time. It started to give Aria memories of her dead twin sister, Dynamic Burst. Now she is grieving over her in her room, while Sonata tries to get her attention and to have her come out the door. Will Aria ever move on from Dynamic?
