The changelings are banished, the day is saved! Yet a victory for one must be a defeat for another, and this particular victory has left one changeling stranded in Canterlot, alone and broken. A certain pink party pony is also alone in the Canterlot night, hiding her depression from her friends. She cannot, however, hide her feelings from a changeling. What will become of this unlikely pair?

(BIG UPDATE: for the next few weeks I will be rewriting almost all of this story and hopefully finally finish it) Follow Iniquis, a young changeling and daughter of the Queen, as she leaves her home for the first time on a dangerous mission: to make Ponyville into a new hive. But when she runs into a pony she can't feed off of, she will discover there is more to a changeling than just the hunt. Will she succeed? Are the ponies of Ponyville doomed to follow the rule of a new changeling queen? Or will Iniquis find that fate isn't as set in stone as she once thought?

Chrysalis believed that nothing could possibly be worse than getting launched out of Canterlot. She was proven wrong when she hit the ground. Bleeding out and far from both her swarm and her home, she is spoken to by a strange entity, who turned out to be stuck in a sword. Through its direction she survived and after making a deal both her and the entity were off to see the world. Unfortunately for almost everyone else was that the perspective that they saw the world through was that of a changeling queen with nothing left to lose and something which is almost certainly stark raving mad after sitting in a pile of rubble for a thousand years or so.

There are many changelings left to die after the defeat of the queen, and there are many stories to tell about them. But this is MY story. Or at least, I thought it was, until I met...her...

Twists, for a start!

Idol Hooves holds a special place in Equestria. He's probably the only exiled changeling to serve in the Royal Guard, or at least, that's what he expects, as exiles don't really broadcast that fact. However, it's well known that Princess Celestia loves all of her little ponies, and her guards perhaps more so, and that makes it one of the best ways for a changeling to discreetly feed.

But how does a changeling even get there, let alone get exiled in the first place? For that matter, why would it ever go to Canterlot? Set a number of years before the series proper, before Luna’s redemption, Idol details how he was exiled, the ponies he’s met, and the series of misadventures that led him to joining the Royal Guard, and should continue a good ways into the series, as something of an alternate perspective.

Soon, he’ll have to deal with a boisterous new princess to serve and a royal wedding in the works bringing a third to power. Will his old instincts bring this new life crashing down around him? What precipitates Chrysalis’s ill-fated assault on Canterlot? Is it really so wrong for a changeling to enjoy good craftsmanship to an obsessive degree?
