A thousand years ago in Equestria, Luna's frustration and desperation has been building for years and years as her social and political isolation grows, but just before Luna's jealousy and resentment can turn into murderous hatred against her sister, a new event triggars Luna's mental collapse and pushes her over the edge. When Luna by circumstance finds herself alone in Celestia's room she reads her sister's diary out of curiosity and discovers all of the disparaging criticism that Celestia has leveled at her over the years about how much of a nuisance Luna has been to her, but has been too polite to say directly to Luna's face.

Luna and Celestia had always supported and stuck with each other all their lives. Even when the common-ponies critisism and shunning of her was at its worst, the knowledge that her sister loved her kept Luna going. The realization that nopony, not even her own sister valued her or thought she was fit for the throne completely shattered whatever remained of her fragile psyche.

And so Luna just gave up...

She gave in...

If no one wanted her there...

Then she wouldn't stay there...

She would leave.

During her usual nightly patrol of the dream realm, Luna happens upon a filly whose nightmares concern her. Twilight and Celestia investigate the filly's whereabouts, only to discover the filly is homeless and has not attended school in some time. During the night, Luna hunts the filly down to bring her to a foster home where she'll be cared for until a family adopts her. Everything ends well.

So, why is Luna heartbroken?

Author's Note: I started writing this story in January 2018, before seasons 8 and 9. I know what happens in those seasons, but with 20+ chapters (and getting longer if I continue it), it's too much to go back and try to integrate those seasons into the story. The last full episode I watched was Fame and Misfortune from season 7, so if anything in this story contradicts the actual canon, it's not on purpose. This is why I marked it "alternate universe", despite I wanted it to be a future version of the canon. Oh, well.

This story was inspired by Welcome, Princess Light Breeze on fanfiction.net by Snoopy7c7. I'm also aware there's already a story where Luna has a foal, but I haven't read that, so any similarities are coincidental and nothing more.

Celestia and Luna are two sisters. They come from a humble family, but full of love. What will happen to the two sisters when their parents mysteriously disappear and meet an unknown pony? Their life will no longer be the same as before. Everything will change.

It took her one thousand years, but Nightmare Moon finally found her child. This is their story.

Hearts and Hooves day has been an Equestrian tradition for some years, and for as equally long, it has been quasi-tradition that the sister rulers of the fledgling Equestrian nation have never been adorned with the title of being another's 'special somepony'. This year, Princess Luna has her eyes on the pink-maned Alicorn she rules beside and has her heart set on breaking the tradition of the two being alone for that special day.

But then the princess of the night receives a bombshell of a surprise: She has a niece. And not just any niece, this niece is an alicorn princess just like Luna.

Princess Luna was always known as the solitary princess. She spent much time in her room, attached to none else other than her sister for their trade of the heavens. She was a very lonely princess, even if it appeared that she preferred the isolation.

Twilight Sparkle found an odd book in her shipment from Princess Celestia. Hoofbound and unlabeled, reading it opens a door she cannot, and will not, close with the youngest diarch.

She will not let one of her friends hurt alone, not on her watch.

It was after they got their cutie marks, that the Cutie Mark Crusaders get the chance to go to Canterlot with their families and celebrate Hearth's Warming Eve. A time full of fun moments, chatting with friends, and many more activities. For Luna however, it is a reminder of all of those positive plus one negative she will be the only one to remember.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders ever so curious, follow her through the whole castle avoiding a few obstacles along the way but what they discover will forever change their understanding of what Hearth's Warming truly means to the Night Princess.
