Tempest Shadow vs. Princess Luna... on Nightmare Night. Who's the scariest of them all? Who will win ponies' hearts as the true Queen of the Night?

A light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek battle of wills, and a celebration of one of the best holidays of the year.

Note: This story is set between Seasons 7 and 8, and makes use of the Tempest Shadow AU established in Reformation... It's a Pony Thing. (However, this story provides the necessary background, so it can also be read on its own.)

Several months have passed since Luna relinquished the throne of Equestria to her sister. She's spent those months working hard to undo the damage she did during her years as Nightmare Moon.

Tonight, she's looking forward to nothing more than going home and sleeping. Unfortunately, her plans are derailed when she runs into a few familiar ponies, and one unfamiliar one.

Princess Celestia was sure that the day was going to be great. The Sun shone bright in the sky, the birds were singing, and nothing could possibly go wrong. That was, until she received some rather grim news concerning her sister.

She thought she'd been clear enough about things last time.

Twilight Sparkle discovers that the alternate timelines created by Starlight Glimmer in her misguided attempt at revenge did not, in fact, disappear when the original timeline was restored. Instead, they persisted as separate, parallel universes.

Never one to leave a job unfinished, she decides to employ the magic of friendship to restore those universes to a more harmonious state.

She begins with Nightmare Moon.

Twilight Sparkle has mastered many skills: friendship, magic, diplomacy, organization, and so on. However, Princess Luna has realized that Twilight has yet to master one final skill before she can truly ascend to the throne.

And so, Luna takes it upon herself to teach Twilight THE TRADITIONAL ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE.

It's a ponified version of one of my favorite scenes from the 1987 movie Spaceballs. There's not much else to say other than I had a good laugh imagining this in the pre-dawn hours.

It was a fairly ordinary day in Perkinsville, New Jersey. Then again, most catastrophes start out like that.

Without warning, Nightmare Moon, freshly freed from her imprisonment in Equestria's moon, crash-lands in the middle of the town. Despite Perkinsville–and our entire world, for that matter–not being exactly what she had in mind for conquest, she figures it's better than nothing, and begins a one-mare campaign to bring the town–and soon all of Earth–to its knees in the face of an eternal night.

Who will win this confrontation? Nightmare Moon or the good (but extremely bewildered) people of Perkinsville?
