Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie have always been considered free spirits. Rainbow herself could never have thought she'd ever reanalyze her entire life for the sake of one person. But when she and Pinkie are put in charge of caring for a young sickly friend during the course of a legendary icestorm, the two learn quite a bit about self-sacrifice and growing up. When Dash went to the Cutie Mark Crusader clubhouse to see if anypony was around she found something she wasn't expecting at all. It was a note from Scootaloo, detailing some of her past and her inner anguish. Scootaloo had been holding back far more pain than anypony knew and one way or another, she was going to end it at Ghastly Gorge.

My first attempt at a sadfic, inspired by my own feelings of depression and worthlessness. I decided to write my feelings out instead of wallowing in self pity. It was also written at 2AM so forgive any mistakes. I did proof read it but you can never be too careful. Decided to rate it teen for the suicidal subject matter.

Scootaloo has always kept one small fact about herself from her friends, and she hoped to keep it forever. After reluctantly telling Rainbow Dash what it is, the two pegasi, the older in particular, learn what a sister truly is.

This story takes place between S3 E6, through S3 E7, and beyond into its own tangent. The only canon I, well, ignore would be what transpires after S3 E7.

I don't have any pre-readers or editors, so if anyone wants to do that then just say so.

Though Scootaloo normally appears to be a happy and lively little filly, every once in a while she reacts in a way that catches other ponies attention. Especially the ponies she spends the most time with, Rainbow Dash and her friends, seems to take notice of these little things.

When she finally reacts in a way that cannot be ignored, it is up to Rainbow Dash to find out what terrible secret Scootaloo is really hiding.

Scootaloo has become unusually distant of late, and Rainbow Dash is worried about her - not least because she never seems comfortable about the subject of her parents. But why doesn't she want to talk about them, even with her "honorary" big sister? Why does the mere mention of her parents bring tears to her eyes?

Back at the Wonderbolt Academy, Rainbow Dash confides her concerns to Soarin, and learns a terrible secret, not just about Scootaloo, but also Spitfire. The latter's sister, who was also Scootaloo's mother, had tragically lost her life some years ago, leaving Scootaloo to look after herself while her father slaves away from dawn till dusk. The two ponies head down to Ponyville to try and reason with him, but things get out of hoof, leading to an angry, lonesome Scootaloo running away from home. As the three adults try to find her along with the Cutie Mark Crusaders, they gradually learn that there is more to the situation surrounding Scootaloo and her father than meets the eye...

When Scootaloo forgets her saddlebag at school one day, Cheerilee sends Sweetie-Belle to her house return it. But when Sweetie-Belle returns to the school, she brings with her a harrowing tale of Scootaloo's home-life.

From the unexpected events that follow, Rainbow realises that in order to ensure Scootaloo's happiness, she can no longer remain just a sister. She needs to become… a little bit more.
