    Portal Transformations Contest I

Announcement and Rules (3 January 2024 to 7 March 2024)

The most up to date version of this contest's rules is at https://www.fimfiction.net/group/217156/portal-transformations/thread/529551/portal-transformations-contest-announcement-and-rules. Please ask your questions there.

    Welcome to the Contest

"When Spike goes through the Mirror Portal from Equestria to CHS, he turns into a dog. What does X turn into when X goes through the Mirror Portal (or a similar portal)? You can pick X and the direction."

Myself (Mockingbirb), I'm especially interested in changes that are less usual, not so commonplace (although I suppose very unsual treatments of the 'usual' changes can be interesting too.)

Cozy Glow Short Story Contest #4

    ⬇⬇⬇THIS COULD BE YOU!!⬇⬇⬇

They said* it couldn’t be done. They said* the child was dealt with, problem solved, nothing more to see here. Rendered completely harmless as a statue. A grotesque chunk of frieze in the old gothic style, fallen from the ramparts of Canterlot Castle. A lawn gnome set in ambush to bemuse wanderers in Celestia and Luna’s precious hedge maze. No way could she inspire a single expression of overwhelming support, let alone three.

    The "New Blood" Contest

[EDIT]: After some debating among the judges, we decided the minimum account age allowed will be 2020 instead of 2021. Makes more sense this way.

At Bean’s Writing Group, we have always done our best to help authors, be they seasoned or novice, struggling or not, take their writing to the next level. But now we want to put the spotlight on the smaller, more recent authors – those who had joined way after the end of G4, and who might find normal contests daunting because of the competition of established, more experienced authors.

This is a chance for you guys to shine and show what the new generation can bring to the table!

For this contest, entries won't be confined to a specific set of characters, a genre, or any other narrow set of requirements. Instead, we will employ the system BWG is most known for: prompts.

    May Pairing Contest 2023

    Howdy!

It's once again May, and you know what that means: it's time to crackship!

What is the May Pairings Contest?

If you don’t know, the May Pairings contest is all about original, rare, or unique ships that aren’t afraid to explore unique dynamics between characters. This means that stories about Lyra and Bon Bon, Vinyl and Octavia, or Rarity and Twilight wouldn’t qualify. Rather, we want to see stories about Autumn Blaze and Lemon Hearts! Daring Do and Treehugger! Octavia and Applejack! You get the picture.

The changing of the seasons is upon us, and love is in the air! And it’s up to you to choose who’s getting together!

For this contest, your assignment is to take a character introduced in the first EqG movie – including Sunset Shimmer, the Humane Five, Flash Sentry, and even background characters like Micro Chips or Cherry Crash – and write a romance about them.

Arboreal Yearnings Contest I: "I'd like to be a tree..."

    Welcome to the Contest

In my extremely UNscientific survey, stories about Fluttershy wanting to be a tree receive more than a hundred likes each, 'on average.' (I took the average over all the stories in the "Arboreal Yearnings" group.)

Competition » The My Little Pony Renaissance Contest · 1:51am May 29th, 2021

Introduction

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to one of the final grand acts of My Little Pony Generation 4. Generation 5 Is scheduled to be released this coming September 2021 and in order to get ready I (Dezmo) have decided to host a major writing contest in the spirit of the upcoming change in the show.

Theme

The My Little Pony Renaissance, or rebirth, will be among us soon whether we like it or not. The goal of this contest is to bridge the gap between the two generations. To give one final farewell to generation 4, and a warm welcome to generation 5. The theme of this contest is change. Change in a characters life that will shape who they will become, for better or worse.

Contest Rules

The story must be written during and submitted starting Tuesday, June 01, 2021 00:00 Central Time and ending Saturday, July 31, 2021 23:59 Central Time.

Must follow the set theme of "Change". This can be as small as Pinkie Pie deciding to dye her hair, to as dramatic as Princess Twilight embracing the dark side.

Minimum word count of 4,000 - Maximum word count of 15,000.

Maximum one story submission.

UUPDATED Rated E or T with family-friendly themes preferred. You are allowed some wiggle room but please try to stick to family-friendly themes and topics.

OCs, Anthro, Humanized, and all Races shown in the show are allowed in the story so long as it takes place in an official MLP Universe.

Crossovers will not be allowed. Alternate Universes are allowed, but no mixing of other established universes.

Submit

Submit your story in the contest group folder named: Renaissance Contest Submission

Judges

Judges: Wanderer D, ROBCakeran53, Scampy, PRINCESS CADENCE, and Dezmo
Stories will be judged by five different authors. Each hand picked from different parts of the community with very different points of views.
Judges will rate using personal opinion and list all stories from best to worst.
Judges will not consult each other during this process.
Higher rated stories (by each judge) are given a better chance than lower rated stories when they are compared between the judges.
The top three stories that receive the most praise between all judges will be the winners.
Because of this utilitarian grading process each judge is given a personal prize that they may reward to a story of their choosing.

Prizes

Winners of the contest will receive these prizes via Paypal.

First place: $500
Second place: $400
Third place: $300
Judge's personal prize: $150 ($750 total)

Conclusion

Dust off your notepads, stockpile your snacks, crack your knuckles, and play lo fi chill beats to write to, because it is time to...

It's happening y'all \o/

Super excited and honored to be asked to judge! Looking forward to some great stories 🙏🙏🙏

Sorry! I just made the group public.

EDIT: This has been updated multiple times! Please look here for the most updated post for this contest!

Holy crap. Sounds like I should try and think of something to write... that kind of money could buy like ... five hundred McChickens :pinkiegasp:

Interesting, but I don't see Gen 4 work going away anytime soon (and thus hardly needs a "goodbye"). But it will be nice to see if Gen 5 can build up its own following. I'm optimistic, at least!

Judges will rate using personal opinion and list all stories from best to worst.

The contest sounds dope, but this worries me. Especially given the prizes, there could be a ridiculously large number of entries. Requiring each judge to read and rank every single one of them might prove exhausting for such a small collection of judges. It might be worth having a backup plan on hand in case things go poorly and you have too many entries to reasonably judge them in the given manner (or would that be things going extremely well?).

My only issue with Gen5, is that its set in Gen4, but in a future where everything has collapsed. I'm really afraid its going to be a lot like other reboots. Where the creators of the reboot intentionally trash the original and claim its not for you when you complain. Just so they can claim they "diversified" it.

Do we know whos doing the scripts? Cause Gen5 will either live or die by those writers.

Higher rated stories are given a better chance than lower rated stories when they are compared between the judges.

... Why?

5526477
I do have more judges in reserve for this exact situation. If we do reach a ridiculous amount of stories, we will cross that bridge when we get there.

5526478
Just remember to treat the whole thing as an alternate timeline, albeit an "official" one.

I'm a trash writer and not may never really do contests like this. Sorry.

But good luck to those who are

5526478
According to the G5 staff comments revealing G5 would be in the same universe as G4, the whole reason that's the case was precisely because the G5 staff loathed the idea of just throwing away everything G4 had done and created so to start from scratch. So if they can claim that, I highly doubt the connection exists just so G5 can trash G4. Indeed, I would expect the opposite.

In any case, I, for one, am optimistic that G5 will be able to continue what G4 started.

I'm not sure if I will join or not, but can people put in more than one entry, as long as someone doesn't get awards from two or more of them? Also, if I were to win one of the prizes, could I perhaps offer the prize to another Fimfiction user? Thank you!

To give one final farewell to generation 4,

Gen 5 is coming, and I welcome it gladly, but this quote is wrong.

I'll brainstorm and see what ideas I can come up with.

I’m having trouble resolving what seems to be a contradictory set of requirements. On the one hand is the directive . . .

Rated E or T only. [Italics added.]

Then the very next passage is . . .

This contest is meant to remember the show and its messages, so we will only accept stories that can be told to children. You are allowed some very minor wiggle room but please stick to child friendly themes and topics on the surface and keep adult themes underneath.

I can’t square these. It’s my understanding T by definition means the story goes beyond “child-friendly themes and topics”. If the latter truly is supposed to be the spirit of the contest, shouldn’t that require an E rating only?

Alas, the child-friendly requirement completely torpedoes the only idea I had that possibly would fit the prompt.

5526553
I agree. Its a bit contradicting

5526479
It's a friendship lesson.

Well, this is a new concept.
I'm thinking a mix of industrial revolution, sociotal progressive, and a crud ton of industrialization.
Alongside a healthy dose of OOC Twilight.

Yeah, let's do this

Higher rated stories are given a better chance than lower rated stories when they are compared between the judges.

Meaning ratings being enabled is mandatory, yes? If you're writing around a big twist reveal and don't want comments spoiling it, you're fresh out of luck? Or if you're writing around a theme or episode the show covered, but which had/has a rabid anti-base that might downvote out of spite, then you're also automatically at a disadvantage you cannot cancel?

Just making sure, doubtful if I'll toss anything in myself with all the other stuff in the pipeline, but keeping an open mind about it, so kinda want to settle on the parameters first.

Intriguing. Though as has been noted, a few of the requirements seem to contradict one another, and that's a terribly vague prompt. Still, I'll see what I can come up with.

5526553
It doesn't seem very complicated to me. It's just the kind of story you would see on a Saturday morning cartoon.

5526619
5526479
Oh! I see the confusion in this one now.

"Higher rated stories" meaning the rating between each judge, not the website rating. I'll see if I can get this post edited.

5526553
5526589
5526626
My bad on the confusion guys it made sense in my head when I wrote it. Try reading the FAQ if you haven't already as that answers your question already.

But when I added in the bit "We will only accept stories that can be told to children" part I was mostly rambling why rated M stories aren't allowed. The rule is E or T, with some slight nudging on more of the E side but it is still available to you, the writer, to go into T territory.

And for those of you confused on the difference between E,T and M use this.

It's funny. I've watched eight seasons out of nine, but I went a little sour on the show toward the end there. Now, I like the concept for this competition, but I don't know. We'll see. It's still fun to compete, but I don't know. Does a person like me really have the right spirit to compete in this? No, maybe not, but still.

5526634
Awesome, thanks for clarifying that. It's an easy thing to miss, just wanted to be sure.

5526653
Thank you for asking! It didn't cross my mind at all when I was typing this up. Contest doesn't start for another couple of days so I'm glad to get all of these inputs. I'm going to lessen the restrictions on the story rating since it is too complex than I intend.

For anyone reading in the future please visit Here for the most up to date rules.

The theme song for this contest:

5526634
Okay, if T is allowed, even if not preferred, I’ll give it a shot. What I have in mind is nowhere near M territory, but neither is it near E. Still, I try to remain true to characters and ethos even when treating with more adult themes.

5526619
Also, you can turn off comments separately from ratings.

What an amazing (digital) painting.

Princess Twilight embracing the dark side.

I can’t see this staying in E or T territory. Her turning to the dark side either results in porn or a LOT of blood/death

Now how can I turn down a purse like that?

I'm in.

Terribly missed opportunity. Should have called it Poneissance.

Or Reneighssance.

Considering all of my options here...

Can the fic be set in the same universe as a past fic we have already written, so long as it still doesn't crossover with anything outside of MLP?

Can't wait to see what stories will pop up. I'm gonna give it my all as well:heart:

Kind of a giveaway theme. I mean, what kind of story that's worth anything doesn't involve change of some kind?

I don't know anything about what's going on with the next gen except that they're in 3D... I guess I can make a story about that?

5526725
You can twist it and make a comedy about twilight embracing 'the dark side' that will have nothing to do with dark magic stuff

To give one final farewell to generation 4

This is fimfiction.net
You want Gen5fiction.org

5526725
You could simply write a did about twilight not organising things

I think i'll stick to gen 4, but you're all welcome to "bid farewell" to it

5526995
Or she tries to be evil but keeps screwing things up or doing things that she THINKS are evil but are really just minor annoyances ok yeah I get the idea now

If I may be a bit semantic here: The definiton for renaissance you're using here is "a revival of or renewed interest in something".

One would argue that G4 was a renaissance for the mlp franchise. However, G5, as it stands right now, is a clear and simple reboot. Whether is becomes a second renaissance like it's predecessor remains to be seen.

What happens if people don't have PayPal?

5526725
I know a story that did that really well, but telling you which one would be a spoiler. I know another that is still teen, but to dark for this contest, and again, spoilers.

5527223
Twilight decides to go a little evil to avoid becoming very evil later. She gets Spike and the others of the main six except Applejack to join her. I don't remember the name, which is too bad since now I want to reread it.
