The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » Auld Lang Pone · 12:31am Jan 1st, 2014

Greetings from 2014! Yes, it's just ticked over to 2014 here in the sunny ol' United Kingdom and that means it's time for a 2013 wrap up post! This year sure has been busy. I attended my first con ever (BUCK) and the site went through a myriad of changes as it constantly does, and I think again we're in a stronger place than ever. Growth has been consistent throughout the whole of 2013 which saw us break the 100,000 user barrier and very very nearly smash through the 1 billion word one. We're now averaging nearly 2 million hits a day from about 60,000 unique users. Of course there are many people to thank for this.

Xaquseg: Forever keeping the site from falling apart and forever behind the scenes, except for new years when I get to thank him for all his great work. Xaq is now going to be taking a more active role in site development too rather than just server maintenance.

Meeester: The approval bot himself. Without him we'd certainly have a lot more issues with getting stories up on the site, so thanks to Meeester for making sure the average time stories sit in the queue is probably under an hour now.

Obs, Cynewulf, El, Alex and Wanderer D: These guys all contribute towards clearing that queue too as well as dealing with the many hundreds of reports we get, making sure the site stays as friendly as possible. Thanks guys.

ShadowFlash and RazedRainbow: The two newbies. Thanks for stepping up to the task and doing a fine job of approving stuff!

What's in store for Fimfiction for 2014? Well actually I have a lot of big jobs I want to work through in order to do something very big that will change the site forever..... So here's what's on the cards as far as big jobs go

Android App: I already have most of this done so it's just a case of finishing it off and testing.

Tags: Probably the single biggest change in the site's history. We will be implementing a proper tagging system which will be a lot more powerful than the current genre/character tags and really help the site in the future in regards to searching for stories. It'll also facilitate site-wide blocking of any content you want.

Language Support: It's been on my list of things to do for a long time but in 2014 I really want to sit down and tackle this issue. When it's done the site will have translations of the UI for multiple languages and support language tagging for stories.

Uploading: I would also like to support better uploading procedures this year, which means uploading .doc files and the like instead of having to import from gdocs.

Multi server support: This is server side but something that will need doing to support further expansion in the future. We've made good headway in this area but there are a few nuts to tighten still before we can seriously deploy across multiple servers.

API: Like the app, this is already in full swing but needs completing. When finished, the API will support OAuth access to most of the site's core functionality.

Bookshelves: An idea I had some time ago but haven't had time to work on yet. Think of bookshelves like playlists. The existing favourites system will become a user-default bookshelf and you'll be able to create your own bookshelves to store collections of stories to show to others or for your personal use.

Here's to another great year!

Enough Flutterbat, we get it.

Armalite #2 · Jan 1st, 2014 · · 18 ·

Yeah, but Britain time isn't real time, so it isn't 2014 yet.

1668812 But....but....
Flutterbat is best pone :moustache:

I am super super super excited for the bookshelves feature. And more tagging. Happy New Year to you as well, O Supreme Leader! :pinkiehappy:

Dat honesty. :ajsmug:
Join the club. Who else is hitting the gym for three days? :rainbowlaugh:

To the FiMfiction.net team. Happy New Year, and thank you for giving us this site.

Happy New Year to all the fimfiction staff, and thanks for all the amazing work you guys do! :pinkiehappy:

Happy New Year everypony wherever you are in the world.

Also looking forward to getting my hands on the API.

Here's to another year of Fimfiction growth as more people discover the site and old ones come crawling back on all fours because Fimfiction is THE site for pony fanfics.

New Year resolution - become the next RainbowBob. :pinkiecrazy::heart:

That bookshelves idea sounds like something I've been tempted to request in the past. Please do this! I will have your manbabies.

Or draw you porn.

Or something.

In the meantime, here's a glass of cheer well raised. :pinkiehappy:

Woo, Happy New Year Knighty and FIMFiction...

When midnight strikes down here. It's not midnight yet, silly Knighty. :pinkiecrazy:
Well, not for me. :moustache:

Also, I don't speak British, so please translate the title.

Color me excited and curious about what the future holds. Thanks for being awesome, and happy new years Knighty!!!!:heart::heart::heart::heart:

My resolution for tomorrow? To find something wrong with this site post.

Everyone knows that resolutions never happen anyway.

To the admins of Fimfiction! Steadily ruining their own creation for months, now! Happy new year!

That stuff looks like a lot of stuff I am SO looking forward to. Thanks for your hard work!

>100,000 user barrier
>60,000 unique users

2 out of every 5 users are sockpuppets? Yeesh.

I can't wait for Fimfiction 3.0. Haven't had a Category Five Shitstorm here in a while. Bet it'll be fun.

And here's to another year of fanfics, drama, debates over foalcon, and finding those excellent stories buried in the piles of crap.

In all seriousness though, thank you for keeping this site afloat, knighty. It is always refreshing to come here to read and/or write.

Changes I can actually look forward to!

Android App?!

ANDROID APP?!
...
YESSSSSSSSS-

Did poultron just disappear, or something? :rainbowderp:
Haven't heard from him in ages.

1668818

Given that, outside daylight savings time, Britain is basically operating directly on UTC (the international standard reference timezone), a strong argument can be made that British time is the most real time.

Android App:

Knighty, I love you.

1668949 I think you're lying.

I'm glad 2013 is over.
It sucked.

This bookshelf idea intrigues me. Do I dare hope this means we'll finally be able to follow and get notifications of updates to incomplete stories without favoriting them?

Here's to hoping the new updates don't make the user base explode into an outrage again. Although... it was pretty fun to rip apart an argument or two...

On second thought, go ahead and explode, user base.

Guess that's my new years resolution: turn the dial up on the snarky comments I leave.

I wonder how fast we'll get to 10k Flutterbat stories in 2014...

I can't wait! :pinkiehappy:

2014?! That's going to run the site! I liked it better when it was 2012. Go back to that.

Cant wait to see all this cool new stuff come to fruition, keep up the great work guys :pinkiehappy:

Thank you everyone for making 2013 such an amazing year for me!

Yeah-hayah! I can't wait for the app. I Hope it's good! Enhanced tagging and filtering will be really nice too.

Cheers, to all of FIMFiction. Have a good one.

Keep up the good work!

New Tagging system, Bookcases, Language Support, new ways to Upload. Holy crap sounds like a big year.

But honestly, you guys did some amazing work. Gave us writers a much bigger voice in the fandom by forming this amazing hub.

1668945
Yeah. Where is he?:rainbowhuh:

1668955

Didn't read what? I read the post as well as every comment that had been posted at the time I replied. Was it a reference to some meme I considered too pointless to become aware of?

1668956

I think you're lying.

I'm feeling on top of the world after just finishing a crushing pile of coursework, so I'm not only going to tell you to take it up with the standards bodies, I'm going to give you a logical syllogism, with citations, instead of putting in the effort to be witty. (Logic? That's easy. Humor? That's hard.)

Given: Daylight Savings Time (DST) is not in effect at New Years.
1. Britain uses Western European Time (WET)
2. British WET uses Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) when DST is not in effect
3. Modern GMT is just UTC
4. UTC is the world reference standard for clocks
At New Years, Britain's civil time matches the official international reference time.

What the shit?!

Where the fuck is Poultron?!
