"It seems so distant, twenty-six miles away, restin' in the water serene.
I'd work for anyone, even the Navy, who would float me to my island dream."

Celestia and Luna enjoy the island life, in quiet solitude.

This better be a Red Dwarf reference.

Its cold outside, theres no kind of atmosphere,

Were all alone, more or less,

Let me fly, far away from here,

Fun, fun, fun, in the sun, sun, sun.

Let me lie, shipwrecked and comatose,

Drinking fresh Mango juice.

Goldfish Shoals way nibbling at my toes,

Fun, fun, fun, in the sun, sun, sun.

Is this a Red Dwarf reference?

I'll just say, they could take the Legion of Doom statue out of the garden and unpetrify them and then they would have 3 intelligent creatures to talk to.

Holy shit, yes, it's a Red Dwarf reference. There is a story attached to that title, you know.

"So it shall be. So we decree, as sole remaining citizens of this land."

We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... This Land. (Oops, wrong pop culture reference, plus the princesses are retired.)

As soon as I saw the title in the New Stories thingy, the theme from Red Dwarf started playing in my head. When I clicked on it, I thought your profile pic looked familiar, so I went to the site blog page. You're the one who posted the first few lines of the song in a comment! Howdy! I'm the one who replied with the next lines.

This is a very well-written story. The dialogue between the sisters perfectly captured the light-hearted spirit of Red Dwarf. I love your take on the "everyone's dead" scene. Good luck in the contest.

Heheh, what a ridiculous notion! Can... can you imagine a species so stupid as radically alter the climate of their own planet to be unihabitable, doing nothing to stop the totally preventable flooding of the entire world?

Totally wild - clearly a masterfully created fantasy and nothing more.

Heheheheeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuugh!

I don't know Red Dwarf, so I only have this story to go on, but still, it's actually... quite existential, especially with how much of it is just dialogue. I find it difficult to write a good story about being at the end of the world and there's basically no one left except one or two people around because... well, what are you going to do? I find it even more difficult to do it when the two people in question can't die by old age or are, perhaps truly immortal in the unkillable sense. Staving off boredom or ennui is usually not a recipe for a good story.

But here, it works surreally because they think up of tons of ways and topics to fight the boredom (and the existentialism that comes with being immortal), and... they just don't. Is just the mere idea of fighting boredom entertaining enough? Maybe it's secretly heartwarming that they can have just each other and that's enough to fuel a hundred years (and many more) of solitude? The way I see it, it's less comedy and random and more... not just dark but also... existential(???, repeating that word too much).

Either way, this is thought-provoking, and I do find Celestia's and Luna's characterizations to somehow be quite accurate and engaging after all this time. Thanks for it, str8aura! Looking forward to your next!
