Minuette tries to understand the universe and her powers by throwing herself at the same problem as many times as possible, or at least until she gets bored.

Not much to say outside of reiterating the notes I made while pre-reading:

This story has a lot of complex humor and heart, all carried by your signature storytelling style that makes frivolous lines feel important and important lines feel frivolous.

Plus, the pony you picked to help Minuette conclude her research was pitch perfect. Couldn’t have been anyone else, really. Stellar work.

Wonderful screwball mindscrew. Thank you for a most enjoyable bit of madness mixed with deep thoughts. Pinkie's very good at simplifying the complicated parts of life.

Not since Hard Reset 2: Reset Harder have I had this much fun unravelling time-travel shenanigans. :D This was great, mad props for managing to keep a consistent handle on all of the temporal mechanics. The attention to detail in the Minuette interactions is excellent.

MInuette considered asking how she knew the word volition, but quickly realized how rude that was and bit her tongue. "I... Descartes?"

Always Descartes.

This was a funny story even if there isn't much of point to it which is no problem.

Surprised by loop 100 she didn’t just figure out that the best test would be to interfere with a previous loop in a way that she knows didn’t happen in that loop. Or perhaps she had tried that a number of times with zany coincidences preventing her each time.

The tree of causal outcomes that branched from their decisions or the tree of harmony exerting enough chaos and order to keep time from explode=imploding?

10773643
No, the tree she tried to cut down.

10773643
No the tree her future self cut down then when she became her future self she couldn't resist cutting it down

I was thinking more simple. Go do an action in front of one of her older selves that she knows they never observed. Like put on a weird hat and join herself and Lyra in the booth.

The most straightforward way to solve this: kill any of her past selves.

Would that be murder or suicide?

Well it's been a few days since Casket recommended this to. I see it has climbed onto the featured section in the meantime. Better get to it, I suppose.

Edit: My brain has now become pudding.

That's normal, jestiny

That was a pretty wild temporal, philosophical(?) ride with all those Minuettes going everywhere. And I'd like to say that I came into the story already believing that predestination and free will aren't mutually exclusive (for theological/Christian reasons), so it was a nice surprise to see Pinkie open up with that belief. Sort of like how debating about solipsism doesn't really matter.

Oh, how far this little pony show has risen so that we end up talking about complex predestination and time travel matters! Thanks for this good story.

This was like an amazing PG-13 movie that should've been rated R and that's what makes it great.

Also I'm kinda sad [REDACTED] didn't tell us what

”001100
010010
011110
100001
101101
110011”

Meant? So apparently it's 12:00? Would've been cool if that was cleared up but I guess that's part of the charm this story had. Nothing was ever explained but at the same time; everything is understandable? I'm not making any sense :trixieshiftleft:

but great story!

There is a lone sign on Ponyville beach.

It shows a seagull, with a cross over it.

Many people assume this to mean "Seagulls are not allowed", but this is, of course, ridiculous, as seagulls cannot read and obey the sign.

What it really means is "You are responsible for the seagulls you see."

It's in the eye of the beholder to decide the seagulls fate. Some chase them off instantly. Some take them home as pets. Some leave it to be the next beachgoers problem. But if they are left alone by all tourists for the entire day, they will inevitably be chased off by a lifeguard. As the day goes on, stress increases. This beach is the land of trolley problems.

And I felt as if this has some deeper meaning too! Do not tell me! But this philosophical fic really messed with my head.

A lemon yellow stallion in a beige suit and trilby answered with a smile that did not to much to dilute the sinisterness of his clipboard.

Do

It was the best movie Minuette 100 had ever scene.

Possibly a pun there, but I suspect it should say "seen".

Minuette 50 was among them, sipping her coffee (which had knighted her Manatee) quietly. She had exactly 3.57142857143 fortnights behind her, and exactly 3.57142857143 fortnights ahead of her, and had decided to mark the occasion with a day off before she resumed her grind.

Hold on, if she's at the exact midpoint of her journey, shouldn't she be Minuette 51? I mean, if there are exactly a hundred of her, then the mid point would come at the exact instant that she went back for the 50th time (being 50th out of 99), so she should be the 51st? Admittedly, since the exact midpoint would come at the moment of transition, then you could argue that the second half of Minuette 50's day and the first half of Minuette 51's would constitute the middle, but since this Minuette is having breakfast, she should still be Minuette 51.

I realize this is a point of phenomenal pedantry and it certainly didn't impact my enjoyment of the story, it just stuck out to me a little. And I'm sure Minuette would appreciate the need for analysis. Though I suspect Minuette would hate it, while Minuette would be somewhat indifferent. :pinkiehappy:

Anyway, a nice little bit of Gordian temporal kondylology* and a fun exploration of the nature of time travel. I admit, the ultimate conclusion is one I somewhat believe in myself, but still, I think it gets it across very well. Very well done.

*Not a real word, but as far as I can tell, there's no word for an expert in or the study of knots - it's just "knot theory" or "knot expert", which is utterly useless in terms of vocabulary-play.:ajbemused:

its the time travel code from Futurama.

Enjoyable! Fun dialogues.
I overall like time travel / space travel / spacetime travel stories.
