The Blue EM2

Glad to be here at last.

Sequels1

E

This story is a sequel to Thomas and Friends: Tales from the Mainland Volume 2

Izzy and Porter have been called back to Bury to assist with the East Lancashire Railway's pre-Spring Steam Gala, which this year is themed to the late 1960s and the Summer of Love. She asks her friends if they'd like to help too, and not knowing the area hugely well they agree.

What follows is a celebration not just of Britain's railways, but of the Countercultural spirit that defined an entire generation. So buckle up and join us for the Half Term of Love!

Based on the MLP G5 special Bridlewoodstock, and written to mark both the 40th anniversary of Thomas and Friends and the 55th anniversary of Woodstock. Also my 150th story.

"That won't be too hard," Alphabittle replied, "seeing as you live locally. Besides, the railway always runs an event to coincide with it, so you'll be kept in the loop. Now ten, it's probably best you get off to bed. There's a lot to do in the morning."

Now then,*

As the pair headed away from the scene, neither of them noticed a figure watching them with interest.

Uh oh. :twilightoops:

11816680
1. Oops.

2. Indeed. Spooky.

Pipp put her hands on Sunny's shoulders. "It's not your fault," she said, soothingly. "You weren't in control. If we find Opaline, we'll make her pay for what she did."

Pipp's right. Your not to blame for it. :fluttershysad:

11816693
Indeed, but it's not exactly done much to assuage Sunny's guilt.

Congratulations on your 150th story!!

11816728
Thank you very much! After the craziness of the last story we've got something a bit more relaxed this time.

Oh poor Sunny, I just wanna give her a big comforting hug.

11816826
Likewise. G5 is characterised by a distinct air of tragedy-only three of the Mane 6 have living parents as far as we know, and all of them have been through Tartarus and back on their adventures. No wonder they all bonded so closely...

A Prologue intro? This is a nice change!

This was a good start here. And I feel Sunny right here, how I wish I could hug her right now. And I can’t blame her, yes that crazy Wretch made her do it, but it doesn’t change the fact that she did the actions in body form.

11817254
I like to change things up every now and then.

11817257
Considering how deep and dark some of Tales from the Mainland Vol. 2 got, a rather more light hearted story would serve as a good pallette cleanser, methinks. And completely agreed; if in the same situation I'd probably feel the same way. If anything, I'm probably too quick to beat myself up when stuff goes wrong.

11817283
It certainly is a nice change.

11817284
The same applies to me, but in my case back then because of my Autism, most people treated some small issues like I screwed up big time. To the point, my mind is set on insulting myself when I make the simplest of mistakes. Otherwise, it sticks with me for the rest of the day.

11817289
1. Yup.

2. I can relate to that. I also hadn't realised you had ASD as well.

11817291
Really? I thought I mentioned having it before. I guess I hadn’t.

11817292
Unless I'd somehow forgotten you'd mentioned it.

"I wouldn't call 58 old," Grandma Figgy said. "You shouldn't be so harsh on yourself, Minty. People still listen to the Dreamlands."

Yep, and that's how old my dad is currently. :ajsmug:

"No problem," Ruby smiled, as Misty went on her way. "Hmmm. Something about her felt different somehow."

Wait what?! :applejackconfused:

A few minutes later, every walked in through the door. "So, how'd it go?"

later, everyone*

11817641
1. Musicians do often have long careers. Deborah Harry (Debbie Blondie) is 78, and Ringo Starr's still going strong despite being 84.

2. Remember this for later.

3. Fixed. My keyboard must have glitched.

This is a very interesting storyline here. I admit, for a moment, I had G3 Minty in my head when I heard one of the band members had the same name.

As for the pie, I’m not partial to Key Lime. I’m more Dutch Apple myself. ( I even baked one at one point, and it was then I learned why people would leave them on the windowsills in movies and cartoons.)

11818126
The Minty of Bridlewoodstock is partly a combination of the two; her design harks back to the G1 character, although her personality is intended to be a more world-wise version of the G3 character. The Dreamlands album cover is even done in the G1 art style. However, about two years before Bridlewoodstock aired there was a G5 Advent Calender which contaned a pony which recycled the G3 Minty mould:

static.wikia.nocookie.net/g5mlp/images/3/3c/Sp19.png/revision/latest?cb=20210622204346

I'm partial to a well made Dutch Apple Pie myself; got to sample an authentic Amish one when in Lancaster county last year.

After a wait of a few more minutes, the signal to their line finally changed, and the formation pulled forward into the station to be detached from their towing engine and placed onto the shed. This was proving to be a complex move, owing to the number of engines moving about the shed.

placed into the shed.*

"I wasn't particularly," Bellerophon admitted. "But how many engines are there on shed?"

there in shed?"*

"Well, I've seen musicians own stranger things. Pete Waterman funded his steam empire from the royalties from songs he wrote."

Wow! :pinkiegasp:

More engines began to arrive on the shed and parked up, and another man arrived. He looked very important. "I can't recall asking for this many engines," he said. "We asked for 13 engines for the gala!"

arrive at the shed*

Pipp, who had been doing work on Sophie, got out some paperwork and looked at it. "It says 30 engines here," she said.

Sometimes tells that was done by accident. :unsuresweetie:

Overall, things were going fairly well during the day, apart from some unfortunate problems. One of the steam engines failed at Ramsbottom with leaking tubes and had to be shunted into a siding, away from the main as other trains needed to use the line. There was also another problem with a diesel conking out with a faulty brake ejector, forcing Bellerophon to draw the train into the platforms at Bury.

Oof. :fluttershyouch:

"The key difference is he's a man," Snuzzle said. "You're fully aware the music industy has a double standard when it comes to men and women. They see us as washed out old farts. You've seen the kids at the event. We're old enough to be their grandmothers!"

Yeah but not all people become grandparents by their late 50s/early 60s. :unsuresweetie:

As they conversed, a figure looked over the area with a pair of binoculars. She grabbed a radio. "My lord, we are almost ready to begin."

I hope it isn't who I think it is. :pinkiesad2:

1, 2, and 4. On shed is an established railway term in the UK, meaning the engine is stabled at the depot. It has the same root as 'on the bus'. Similarly, the Jack and the Pack episodes were released under the title 'On Site with Thomas', not 'At the Site with Thomas'.

3. Indeed. One of his former engines was 4472 Flying Scotsman.

5. Hey, I've seen worse SNAFUs.

6. Awkward.

7. 'Old enough to be their grandfather/grandmother' is a colloquial British expression to mean 'quite old'. Snuzzle is using the phrase here to emphasise to Minty that they're not as young as they used to be.

8. Buckle your seatbelt, this is gonna get hair-raising.

11818412
seems like I once again didn't know a simply british term seeing I'm american. :twilightsheepish:

11818419
No worries. In fairness I often has the same challenge when speaking with Americans.

11818300
That’s cool that they called back to the G3 Minty.

Ooh, a real Amish style? I want to try something like that.

Comments on the chapter:
Dank Farrik! Things are in chaos! I had a feeling something would go wrong, but not like this.

And whoever is spying on them, whether it’s “Her that shan’t be named”, a certain chaos freak, or even the Troggles, anyone one of them is bad news.

11818621
I mean, it'd only be fitting for the anniversary. An anniversary means celebrating a franchise in its entirety, even the bits they'd rather forget.

I'll try and dig up a recipe for you.

I fancied writing some different chaos this time.

The answers may surprise you.

11818890
Of course. But it’s too bad most shows don’t do a good job with that.

Sweet!

The change of pace is indeed needed.

I’m sure it will, but I’m prepared if it’s something completely different.

11818892
After all, world ending chaos does need to take a backseat sometimes. Even villains take holidays.

Good.

11818898
Indeed, The PowerPuff Girls (1996) proves this.

11818901
Quite right. Back when they were a serious yet enjoyable show.

11818902
Agreed. An early example of Faust working her magic.

The light equipment continued to switch between colour patterns and rotation patterns to light the stage up in an incredible kaleidoscope of colours and sounds. There were some odd warnings on the panel though, so the technician lowered the volume slightly to avoid overloading the speakers.

Strange... :unsuresweetie:

Izzy's face had drained of most of its colour, and she looked around in fright. "It's Black Annis!" she squeaked.

Who? :applejackconfused:

"I warned all of you that to defy me was to suffer. And nobody defies Black Annis. You will pay the price for your foolishness. "Now go, my minions! Bring me a harvest of voices!"

foolishness. Now go,*

"No," the Sergeant replied. "This was a certain and deliberate attack. And whomever did this shall be brought to justice."

That's somewhat good... but we still have a crisis at hand! :twilightoops:

"What sort of scallywag did this?" Salty asked.

Must've been that Black Annis fellow!!!!!! :twilightangry2:

11819200
1. Indeed.

2. She was mentioned back in Chapter 1:

Izzy nodded. "The troggles are old creatures from Lancastrian folklore. Hundreds of years ago, a witch called Black Annis roamed the countryside, cursing people and doing evil things wherever she went. One of the things she hated the most was the sound of happiness and joy, so she sent evil spirits, called troggles, to steal their voices. They only came out at night, and are rumoured to operate during the Lumabloom. We were all taught this poem as a reminder of what not to do."

3. Corrected.

4. Yes.

5. Or was it? Only one way to find out.
