gapty

Hi. It's gapty. Read a fic today. Or don't. They're both the same to me. Just don't tell knighty I said that.

Trixie, a young filly, is determined to surprise her mother on her birthday, whether it’s with a breakfast or a magic trick.

Written in honour for today's Mother's Day

“You will always be my Great and Powerful Trixie,” she whispered in her ear, a proud smile gracing her face.

Awwwwww

I really like this take on the origin story of Trixie's title and why she wears it like a badge of honor; makes me see the Boast Busters episode version of her in a different light as her being less egotistical and more defensive whenever she had to correct someone by stating her full title, because whenever they didn't she probably took it as an insult to not only herself but her mother who gave her that title to begin with.

Very cute story, loved it.

Awww, that was adorable

Imma be honest. The internet has conditioned me so that when I hear 'surprise', I expect it to be a penis. And yet this is wholesome.

This was a nice story.

On a second reread, I can't believe I didn't get around to commenting on this earlier. This was quite a special story for a special day, and I can't get over how underrated it is.

I also can't get over how freaking cute you wrote filly Trixie in here, her great and powerful persona starting to take shape with a sprinkle of naivety and insecurity. It really feels like a younger, smol version of Trixie.

One thing I really like it's how it is written from Spectacle’s POV, it lets us see the juxtaposition between the harsh adult’s world and the innocence of a filly such as Trixie in here. The contrast of her being tired and hungry but not letting it ruin the surprise trixie has in store for her. She is willing to wait for her to prepare breakfast as well as to reassure her even when she butchered it and almost burned the kitchen in the process. You truly sold her as mom of the year, even moreso when its revealed she had to raise Trixie all by herself.
It was also interesting to see how she didn't end up doing what she was supposed to do according to her cutie mark and how she is not entirely happy with that, and how this reflects Trixie situation all the same, her being a unicorn hardly capable of using magic in order to perform fake magic, but just like in the beginning, she yearns for a better luck for Trixie than herself, so she gives her the reassurance she wished she would have gotten so she would pursue her dream career, even though it would probably mean she would follow the same path as her father, and leave her side. When Spectacle cutie mark, opposed to her occupation in order to care for Trixie, was mentioned, I was partly expecting a set up like this, not in a predictive manner but as in the direction I wished it would take because of how well it would fit the theme and the characters involved, and i'm glad i wasn't disappointed.

Though I feel that to preserve the lighthearted tone it kind of rushes the climax of the story where Spectacle reassures her after her attempt at a magic trick goes south. That scene honestly could have used more words to make it more emotionally impactful, as the seeds were already planted there.

Side note but I can't help but notice that Spectacle parents (especially her father) could have influenced her choice of career, unrelated to what she would have wanted to do due to not being good enough. While never implied, it could be inferred from Spectacle's reaction to him being disappointed at Trixie’s incompetence, and her getting defensive.

The best gift that Trixie gave to Spectacle that day wasn't a magically engineered sunflower, it was the feeling she gave her the best she could give. I like how this fic isn't shallow in its portrayal of mother-daughter love, but it represents what influence Spectacle is in her daughter’s life and how she is paid in kind. Which makes this such a great mother’s day story. Thanks for writing this!

The Great and Loving Spectacle is the most creative and no one will dishonour what she named her Powerful daughter! :trixieshiftleft:

First of all, thank you so much for the detailed and nice comment!

I wanted to clarify a few things:

It was her grandfather who had taught this useful skill to her, and upon his passing, she had taken up the mantle.

Spectacle didn't took over the job of her father, but grandfather after he passed. The way I intented it to be is as Spectacle seeing the opportunity for a safe job she could be doing at home, as her grandfather taught it to her already :twilightsheepish:

And yeah, some parts are rushed like the climax, also due to the fact that I came with the idea way too late and wanted to finish it on Mother's Day. But of course this shouldn't be an excuse, but it explains a reason why I didn't asked for a prereader who would have noticed that part…

I will defend her father though, mainly for two points: His more grumpy behaviour was added to give a bit more character to her parents. Maybe cheap, but well, I didn't want both of her parents to be "the same". Although the other reason was to excuse to bring up Trixie's father and how a sort of "hate" towards him exists, but you're right about how Spectacle decided to support Trixie even if it meant following the footstep of her father.

The comment about Trixie's failure on the stage was in my mind an acommpany to Spectacle's father's character and how in the episode "Cutie Pox", the cutie mark gave Apple Bloom talents in an instant, so I assumed that cutie marks are taken as "you become automatically perfect at your destiny" and then him wondering why Trixie still fails. But of course, once I published something and you interprete something into a scene, then you're also right.

But of course he isn't an angel, Spectacle quickly averted the topic of Trixie's father out of fear to start a heated discussion, and his wife had to stop him too. Overall, it's interesting to see how he was fittingly interpreted nonetheless.

Overall, I really appreciate your time and detail you put into the comment, pointing out so many things that it was a joy reading how many details were noticed and appreciated, especially Spectacle's sacrifice, love and influence for Trixie

And of course, thanks to anyone else who commented on the story!
